USWNT and Canada Take It Deep Into PK's Before It's Over

Carli LloydThe USWNT and Canada played to a 0-0 stalemate in regulation, a 1-1 tie in overtime, and then the US won it 6-5 in the shootout. While the US dominated in shots (24-10) and possession, they were not able to pull away from the Big Red Machine, in no small part due to the Herculian efforts of Canadian Goalie Erin McLeod. Carli Lloyd scored for the US on a blast in the 107th minute, and then Melissa Tancredi answered in the 116th with a header that sent OT on to PK’s! From there it went …

… and USWNT goalie Nicole Barnhart came up huge with the save that put the USWNT over the top (and allowed those of us who were “watching” on MatchTracker to go to bed)!”It was an exciting game, you could hear it in the crowd’s reaction,” said Coach Pia Sundhage. “The way we played in the second half was very good and we created a lot of chances. This is the environment that really matters when you have the word “final” attached to it and being pushed to penalty kicks it’s one of the best things that could happen to the U.S. team in this tournament. You can’t match the feeling in practice of taking penalty kicks in a game like this, and it could happen in the Olympics. But I am very happy for the team as there were so many good things out there tonight.”It sounds like this would have been an absolutely amazing game to see. Too bad, the TV coverage just ain’t there. I kinda wonder if it’s detritus from the Ryan era … the Bronze at the World Cup and the generally uninspired soccer leading to a falling-off of interest. At any rate – can’t wait for May 3 … 7Pm ET, when we’ll be able to see the USWNT on TV for the first time when the play Australia in Birmingham, Alabama!

Here are some shots from Isiphotos … nice to have a visual or two!
