Monday Catch-Up

After a beautiful weekend away and a great visit with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew, there’s a lot to catch up on. I’m sure I’ll be back in the swing in a couple of days … but right now it’s pretty slow-going.

On the USWNT front, Lauren Cheney is replacing Abby on the roster, as the team regroups and gets ready to head to Beijing. Kate Markgraf still thinks the team can do it … and Carli Lloyd recently had a nice send-off from her hometown fans. According to this nice piece in the LA Times, the loss of Wambach will improve (and prove) the USWNT’s resilience (I tend to agree). Thankfully, they’ve been training to incorporate a more varied attack – and now’s the time that they need to put all that work to good use!

Here’s Andrea Canales’ take on the situation. If anyone can get this team up and running again -and instill the necessary confidence in everyone – most especially the strikers who’ll need to step up and score in this new Abby-less world, it’s Pia. Thank goodness the team was transitioning away from Ryan-style soccer when this happened!

On the WPS site we’ve got a blog post that links to some speculation that it’s bad WWC Karma that led to Abby’s broken leg. Looks like no one’s going to let that go easily!

Last, but certainly not least, here’s the commentary from Women’s Sports Nation … a new discovery and great new addition to my women’s sports/women’s soccer links!

IN world news (this is definitely going to take some serious catching up) I see that Obama is in Iraq now after a visit to Afghanistan. Here’s a nice article form the NY Times giving detail about Maliki’s comments on Obama’s plan for withdrawing US troops. And now I’m off …
