HollyCornblog Heads Home

Yes, that’s right … HollyCornblog is heading home today. And none too soon Bathroom Visitor!… it’s time for this alligator-haunted vacation to come to an end. The other day, she wrote that she grabbed her towel to take a shower … and this little guy fell onto the floor. Yikes! If that’s not a baby alligator I don’t know what it is! The interloper was summarily transferred from room to poolside … from whence he disappeared.

Meanwhile, she also sent along some great pictures of some fish called “Jacks” Jacks Arrivingthat they watched from the dock near their hotel. They apparently come in in droves and then feed on the poor minnows and other tidbits that happen to be in the area at the time. (Can you imagine sitting with a pole and seeing this crew coming? Or even more challenging … being in the water while they all churn toward you?)

Jacks EatingHere’s what they look like when they are feeding. All you can see are the open mouths, looking like big O’s in the water. HollyCornblog said that they reminded her of Christmas Carolers … wet, slimey Christmas Carolers!

I didn’t realize what a wildlife tour this little trip was going to be? Normally I hear about kayaking and beach-walking and the great new beers that they are discovering … but this time it’s been all fish and alligators and such. Guess our horizons are expanding! šŸ˜‰

Now, onto some tidbits from here and there:

  • Google has launched Google Health … which looks very interesting … and like something I’ll need to be studying up on for work!
  • Bush is reportedly planning an active campaign role for the GOP. Rock on, brother … rock on!
  • Ed Gillespie (Dubya’s counselor) has written to NBC news complaining about how they presented some comments by the Prez and whining that ” This deceitful editing to further a media-manufactured storyline is utterly misleading and irresponsible …” This from the folks who brought us WMD and everything that followed … unbelievable. Nah – actually, believable.
  • Vito Fossella … another of those “family values” Republicans, has announced that he is not running for re-election.  Little problems with extra-marital affairs and extra-marital kids and DUI’s and such.  Too bad … wish he’d stay.  He fit in quite well, I thought!
  • On a higher note (much higher) here’s a nice article about Pia from the Globe … and a piece from USSF about camp opening for the Peace Queen Cup.  Kristin Luckenbill is back … while Nicole Barnhart recovers from knee surgery.

I might have been lying about Ruby. The pay phone was inexplicably sitting in front of several residential cottages. No motels in the immediate neighborhood. Our neighbors were always kind enough to answer it for us even though they all had their own inhouse telephones.

Funny, but i bet the pay phone was where we used to stay, the Village Inn across the street from Stan’s. I think it does still smell brackish (maybe even more salty) down there.

Ask Stan’s son. I lived up the street in a tiny two-room cottage that I rented along with two other women from a retired circus performer named Ruby who supposedly was inextricably attached to an emphysema machine. People could only reach us by calling the pay phone across the street. Does Goodland still smell from brackish water everywhere you go?

WOW, that’s cool. I will ask next time. We used to stay at the little motel across the street from Stan’s until the hurricane destroyed it. We like Goodland because it is off the beaten track, and quiet, Marco is so crowded and busy. I bet is would be REAL different for you to see that area now, very built up, and TONS of money (in Marco.)

Yes, Stan’s in Goodland. I bartended there a little bit during the 1977-78 season. Next time you go, ask if they remember me.

Do you mean the Stan’s in Goodland? Fun place, but we didn’t get there this trip. I do have a tee shirt from there, but it isn’t turquoise.

I haven’t checked out Google Health yet but in general I’m dumbstruck by the brillance of everything Google does.
They paint the air conditioners turquoise blue? You weren’t staying at Stan’s on Marco Island by any chance?

Sorry to ruin the poolside story, but it was actually on top of our air conditioner (outside) on the second floor. It was better there, then in my bathroom:-) Everything is that lovely pool color down there.

Wow – Greta Garbo – I was way off, huh? And you’re right … HollyCornblog should be ashamed! And do you have any thoughts/opinions about Google Health … or does it just make you feel like Garbo?

Oh, that’s a good idea, HollyCornblog–stick the alligator poolside where it can thrive and give an unsuspecting swimmer a heart attack some day.
It was Greta Garbo who wanted to be left alone….

  14. Sounds kinda like Gloria Swanson … or was that Marlene Dietrich … wanting to be left alone? Anyway – a wise decision. And … DEAR UNIVERSE … enough with the alligators, already!

There are alligators on Bald Head Island, where I spent my weekend! Saw one lazing on the edge of the golf course. They prefer to be left alone, so we obliged. BJ
