Daffodils

Daffodils

by William Wordsworth

I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

And here’s the visual …

  1. Stephen – did not know you had poetry in your veins – although it doesn’t entirely surprise me. Love that word vex’d! Please thank Fiona for her help with Willie – it is so sad … and really helps to have her in the equation!

    And CB … the music is something canned form Flip Video – can’t remember what they call it – but it’s available at no cost and without risk of running afoul of the copyright police.

    This was one of my favorite poems in college. Did I ever tell you I was an English Lit minor? I often dreamed of being a poet, spending my days by the lake, or the river, or in the fields, idly passing time while my imagination took hold of me and inspired a few lines of verse.

    Now I am vex’d by the challenges of potty training young lads, and contemplating the imminent disaster of my daughter’s teen years (she has me wrapped around her finger already, though not even a year old).

    Thanks, Jordy, for the bumpy ride – beautiful daffodils, and I love how the size of the clumps speak to their history on the land!
