Brazil 2-Germny 1 at 48th Minute

First time Germany has trailed since HAO’s goal in 2004!

Germany-Brazil 1-1 at Half

Germany had a breakaway goal by Birgit Prinz – her first of the tournament. At @ the 40th minute Brazil – gradually starting to look more like themselves – scored on a beautiful play that went through Marta (faking a shot and drawing the defense) to Formiga who slotted it through. It was the first major tournament goal scored on Angerer since HAO scored against her in the 2004 Olympics!

Meanwhile, here’s a quarterfinal retrospective and semi-final preview from Graham Hays on the WPS site.

More USWNT Stuff and a Peek at Margaret McWethy's Show!

We’ve got some more quick updates and prognostications about tomorrow’s USWNT match with Japan – first, from Japanese coach Norio Sasaki, who is full of confidence after Japan’s run through Group G. It may prove to be a sad irony of the Olympics, however, that Japan’s stellar play, particularly against Norway, may be the thing which knocks them out of contention for the Gold, as what they landed themselves, with all their hard work, as a showdown with the USWNT – arguably still the team to beat in women’s soccer according to Grant Wahl.

Right now, this USWNT has a big opportunity to step out from the giant shadow of past glories and establish its own identity. Thinking of them, I think of the New England Patriots in their first of their recent string of Super Bowl appearances. Tom Brady was not a superstar … and the team ran out onto the field en masse rather than be introduced as individuals. That’s what this USWNT reminds me of. The superstars will come – but right now, it’s all about the team.

Meanwhile, on the fine arts front, I have a link from Margaret McWethy … which lets you take a look at some of the paintings from her recent show. Check it out! Her show is on display at the Egeli Gallery in Provincetown, MA through the summer. The gallery is at 382 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA 02657.

Of Phelps and Other Phenomena (Like the USWNT)!

Michael Phelps broke Mark Spitz’ gold medal record last night -an amazing feat, indeed. I don’t know about you, but I find such milestones diminished by the hype … the marketing … the hoopla … the commentary. The events and the raw footage about the events is enough. The look on Michael Phelps’ face (or his mother’s face) speaks volumes. The more the media tries to pump up the frenzy – he more I am told how meaningful this or that is, the more drained of actual, authentic meaning these events feel to me. Unfortunate and ironic … we are satiated but undernourished. I see that Michael Phelps has broken Mark Spitz’ longstanding record and a part of me is amazed and touched. Then the commentator starts exhuberating, and the rest of me says, “Okay, what’s next?”

I woke up this morning thinking about Michael Phelps and the fact that now he will, no doubt, need to go to the White House to provide the Prez with a photo op. I don’t know what Michael Phelps’ political views are … but my thought on waking this morning was, “What a drag!” I imagine that there is no polite or generally acceptable way to turn down an invitation like that.

On the soccer front, there are lost of good match previews coming up on line. My take on Monday’s US-Japan game is that both teams are playing their best soccer of the tournament and we should see a possession-oriented game with some very pretty goals, and the US coming out on top. The US side did not have Chalupny on the pitch in their previous meeting with Japan, and I think this will make a big difference in Japan’s ability to have their way on Monday. I imagine that Pia will continue with what has been working so far – so no changes in the starting line-up. Maybe we’ll see Kai sooner this game – and if we need more energy up top, I wouldn’t mind seeing Cheney again. I’ll be surprised if Heath gets more time … she simply hasn’t made much of her opportunities and has seemed more of a liability than a plus when she’s been on the field. And I continue to wonder what’s up with Wagner and her lack of time on the pitch. If we’re losing (which I don’t expect to see) I think Pia might give Wagner some more playing time, to beef up the offense. Not sure who she’ll take out though … hmmm! I hope we are not in a situation where Pia is bringing in subs to try to catch up … let’s have a more relaxing Monday morning, okay? 😉

In other previews of the match, we’ve got:

  • Lindsey Dolich writing about “songbird Sundhage” and her charges. She notes that, “The U.S. has shown impressive reactive growth, quickly rallying to rebuild after suffering massive structural (and emotional) damage.” This is in direct reference to the loss of Abby Wambach (around whom the USWNT offense had been constructed for the past 5+ years) just a month ago. I think it also applies to the whole Women’s World Cup-Greg Ryan-Hope Solo episode, too. As a unit, this USWNT is not just regrouping – it is recreating itself before our eyes. I give them a lot of credit for their gutsy play in the highest of high pressure situations!
  • Andrea Canales likes Brazil and the US on Monday, and offers her take on the semi-final match-ups. She emphasizes the need for excellent, organized defense on the part of the USWNT. This would be a great time to see the center of the US midfield step up and get in sync – something that has been lacking thus far in the tournament (IMHO).

In other soccer-related features from here and there, we have a FIFA.com profile of Natasha Kai, a US Soccer piece on Heather Mitts, a recap about the USWNT on Ole Ole, and a recap/preview from du Nord.

Finally, the USWNT has announced a three-game post-Olympics tour. The matches will all be against Ireland. I seem to recall at least one previous post-tournament tour involving Ireland. All I can say is … WHAT – no Boston game???

Piercy, Phelps, Phillies, Phantastic Phootball Phanatics … and of Course the USWNT … and Elvis!

First (from The Writer’s Almanac), a wonderful poem by Marge Piercy to start your day with something introspective – before diving into the usual sports-centric deluge! This poem runs along the thought-path I was pursuing last night just before sleep. Guess it may be time to get reacquainted with myself … as soon as the USWNT has won its gold medal … 😉

Dislocation
by Marge Piercy

It happens in an instant.
My grandma used to say
someone is walking on your grave.

It’s that moment when your life
is suddenly strange to you
as someone else’s coat

you have slipped on at a party
by accident, and it is far
too big or too tight for you.

Your life feels awkward, ill
fitting. You remember why you
came into this kitchen, but you

feel you don’t belong here.
It scares you in a remote
numb way. You fear that you-

whatever you means, this mind,
this entity stuck into a name
like mercury dropped into water-

have lost the ability to enter your
self, a key that no longer works.
Perhaps you will be locked

out here forever peering in
at your body, if that self is really
what you are. If you
are at all.

And now, for the sports … Continue reading

Olympic Gold, Silver … and Something Browne That I Like … and the USWNT, Too!

First, congratulations to gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson on their gold and silver in the all around, and to Michael Phelps on his 6th gold and 6th world record.

On the Browne front, I love it that Jackson Browne is suing the McCain campaign for stealing his music. How dumb are they? Another example of McCain’s management acumen, I guess. Okay, so it wasn’t actually the McCain campaign … it was the Ohio Republican party or something like that. But you know what, John – you can’t split hairs like that when you’re Prez (goddess help us). You’ll be in charge of the Ohio Republican party, too!

Meanwhile, on the soccer front, I dreamed I was playing goalie (lacrosse – but same ‘ballpark’) and was on fire. NOTHING was getting through me! Here’s to Hope having a day like that today … and Kai getting on the scoreboard … along with a few of her compatriots in those US jersey’s.

The Boston Breakers are hosting another chat with Tony DiCicco this morning (started at 5:30 AM and will continue through the game – with Tony joining at the half and end, if it’s like last time.) Here’s the USSF preview. And the latest from the Blog. The sun is coming up here in NH … looks like we’re about ready to roll!

More Pre-Game Analysis

It sounds like Lindsey Dolich likes the USWNT’s chances – but is NOT taking Canada lightly (nor are we).

There were major doubts that Swede Pia Sundhage would pull the strings for a team left reeling after the loss of superlative striker Abby Wambach. But, somehow, Sundhage delicately guided a vulnerable U.S. team, inspiring what seemed like a miraculous comeback.

“You look at the first 15 minutes of that game [against Norway] to the last 15 minutes of this game and many things have happened,” said Sundhage in a U.S. Soccer press release.”The whole team, and myself, has gained confidence every minute we’ve been together. The good part of this road is that we have experienced both sides. Losing and winning, and that’s good going into the quarterfinals where it’s now or never.”

Meanwhile, did you know that Erica Walsh, an assistant to Pia, is the Penn State Head Coach (and sometimes soccer commentator)? And did you know that Erin McLeod, Canadian goalkeeper extraordinaire, was an All-American at Penn State? Neither did I!

Here in JordanCornblog land we’re heading to bed early to rest up for the morning’s exertions!

I hope the weather clears up in Shanghai (or at the very least, the lightning doesn’t return)!

Women's Soccer Quarterfinal Previews and Predictions

pia-yes.jpgAndrea Canales has put up her previews and predictions on ESPNsoccernet. And here’s Marta talking about the Brazil-Norway match-up tomorrow. European women’s soccer is showcased in the Sweden-Germany quarterfinal, and here’s a nice piece about Pia from the FIFA site.

Finally, here’s a link to the bracket for the second stage of the women’ tournament.  (Go USWNT!)

USWNT v. Canada … 23 Hours and Counting

Tomorrow at 6AM we’ll start the next leg of the Olympic tournament journey. There’s not a lot in the way of soccer news in the interim. The WNT Blog is a good place to track the USWNT’s travels and preparation for tomorrow’s showdown with Canada. An upbeat and determined Canadian squad is looking for a big win … and the Boston Breakers‘ site has links to some of the players’ website and blogs, as follows: Angela Hucles, Lori Chalupny, Heather Mitts, Lindsay Tarpley, Shannon Boxx, Kristine Lilly, Abby Wambach, and Leslie Osborne. If nothing else, it’s fascinating to see how each individual chooses to present/market herself.

In other news, the Phillies lost to the Dodgers on a 9th inning homer by Mia Hamm’s husband. Michael Phelps, as well as the US women’s basketball and softball teams continue to dominate.

Oh yeah, and there are a couple of conventions on the horizon … and John Edwards will be participating in neither of them! (Who’d have thought he’d end up sharing the anti-limelight with the likes of Dick Cheney and – if they could get away with it – George W. Bush?)

McCain SprainMeanwhile, in a development that probably surprises no one, the very brittle Cindy McCain nearly broke after a fan shook her hand too hard. (What’s most puzzling to me about this story is the level of enthusiasm apparently generated by Ms. McCain. Clearly I am missing out on something!)
