Still Soaring … So Some Sundry Soccer Stuff … Sorry (non)Soccer Surfers and Smatterers!

Wow, wow, wow. Even the Phillies’ loss has not dampened my amazement and feeling of great good fortune. The USWNT is through to the quarterfinals (not too surprising) and has won their group (pretty darn surprising) and is starting to score some goals (excellent news). To date, five different people have scored, and I’m hoping that Natasha Kai will join that group soon, and the goals will keep coming right through the gold medal match.

The USWNT will face Canada on Friday morning (6AM ET). The Canadians, in their first Olympics, finished third in their group and were fully expecting to face Norway. So much has changed. The winner of the Canada-USWNT match-up will face the winner of China-Japan en-route to the final. On the other side, the winner of Norway-Brazil faces the winner of Germany-Sweden.

As we have seen, anything can happen! BUT if I were a betting woman (which happily, I am not – as I am way-too-often wrong) my money would be on the following scenario Continue reading

Amazing Turn of Events!

As I read things (currently USWNT up 4-0 over NZ and Japan beating Norway 4-1) this leaves the USWNT winning the group … and NOT playing Brazil (but maybe Nigeria) in the next round.  WOW!  I could be off base … but amazing if true!

Tarps and Hucles scored (so far) in the second half for the USWNT.  Kai is going to add another … I hope.

And here’s a plug for the Breakers going after Homere Sawa – she’s awesome!

AT FULL TIME:  Japan defeated Norway 5-1!  The USWNT beat NZ 4-0.  That leaves the USWNT as the winner of their group – and so, whatever happens, they avoid both Germany and Brazil in the quarterfinals.  Absolutely amazing turn of events – and great result for the USWNT.  (I can’t wait to watch the tape tonight … hope they are continuing to gel!)

Alice?  ML?  What did you think?

HAO Scores … Then A-Rod

Looks like it’s 1-0 USWNT on an early goal by Heather O’Reilly.   Then 2-0 (thanks to A-Rod).

Second half underway … let the floodgates open!

Halftime … Full Time

Brazil is up 3-1 on a hat trick by Christiane (and a 2nd goal that will be on the highlight reel)!  Germany and North Korea are tied at the half 0-0.

And JordanCornblog is batting .500 so far – with Germany pulling out the win 1-0 …

Another Gold for Michael Phelps, Game Three Women's Football, and Pilobolus!

Yup – Michael Phelps won another gold in world record time. Just amazing!

And yup, here we go with game three of the preliminaries, starting with Germany v North Korea and Brazil v Nigeria – both interesting match-ups – both now underway. Then, starting at 7:45 the remaining 4 matches get underway. You can follow the USWNT while chatting on-line with Boston Breakers coach Tony DiCicco at the Breakers site, if you like.

My picks for today’s games? (No one asked … but I’m indulging myself … with apologies to my Scandinavian friends!) North Korea, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, USWNT.

And just in case you get bored .. here’s a great Pilobolus video sent to me by HollyCornblog:

Women's Olympic Soccer Updates

I’ve been taking some time this morning to catch up on Olympic soccer news and, in particular, how the Swedish team is doing. Their performance at the Olympics has paralleled that of the USWNT in ways that have surprised me, as I thought they’d be one of the stronger sides coming out of the preliminaries.

The fact that Sweden’s top scorer Hanna Ljungberg is out of the tournament, bothered by persistent injuries, is yet-another most unfortunate USWNT parallel. Here’s Jocasta’s description of their opening match against China (in which they upheld a team tradition, apparently – losing the tournament opener.).

Sweden has this habit of losing the first game in major tournaments. The local newspaper claimed that the team has not won their opening game in ten years, a figure that includes two European Championships, three World Cups, and two Summer Olympics. You have to go back to 1997 to find a Swedish opening game win, in the Euros of that year. This means that I (and I’ll bet most everyone reading this) have never seen them win an opening game.

They defeated Argentina 1-0 on Saturday and will face Canada on Tuesday. The Canadians, meanwhile, in their first Olympics, could qualify for the quarterfinals before they even start playing. If Germany defeats North Korea … not a foregone conclusion by any means … then the Canadians are through!

The schedule for tomorrow morning’s matches is (all ET):

  • 5AM Group F: Germany v North Korea and Brazil v Nigeria;
  • 7:45 AM Group E: China v Argentina and Sweden v Canada; and
  • 7:45 AM Group G: Norway v Japan and USWNT v New Zealand.

Pia Getting Psyched!Meanwhile, Gayle Bryan liked what she saw of the USWNT on Saturday.

Let’s keep it up, ladies – get your psych on!

A win sends the US to the quarterfinals against the winner of Group F.

Onward!

Inspirational Finish … to Start Your Monday

I didn’t stay up late enough to actually see Michael Phelps and his relay teammates get the gold – but what a stunner as Jason Lezak anchored an amazing race! (I was aiming to watch past 9PM, but when Bob Costas started interviewing a smirking GW Bush I had to call it a night.) Anyway – the video is definitely worth a look!

On the USWNT front, Lindsey Dolich offers her take on tomorrow’s NZ game, predicting a tough, physical match-up. New Zealand has to be very psyched to be in the position they are at this stage – in their first ever Olympics. I disagree with her about putting Wagner in, however. The US team is just starting to pick up momentum and I don’t see Pia messing with it at this stage. Here’s Beau Dure in USA Today – on tomorrow’s match, which will decide the group standings:

The difference between first and second in the group is the difference between a brutal quarterfinal pairing and a merely tough one. The group runner-up plays the winner of the Group of Death — Group F, featuring tournament favorites Germany and Brazil along with dangerous North Korea. The group winner plays a third-place team, either from Group F or Group E.

Unless something really unexpected happens (akin the their opening game shellacking), it’s looking very likely that the USWNT will face either Brazil or Germany in the quarterfinal.

Lisa LeslieOn the basketball front, the US women face China today at 8AM ET. This should be a bit of a tougher match-up than their opening game was.

On the home front, JPE and MLH are off to Deer Island (the second wave) and today is our friend Marisha’s first day of work as a newly-minted RN. She’s working up in Lebanon, NH at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital … you go girl!

Beulah's Match Report and Other News of the USWNT and Beyond

Here’s Beulah’s match report. I’m always so pleased when one or two things I noticed show up in Beulah’s write-up! I continue to be impressed with HAO’s play – and was also very glad to see Mitts playing more like her old self. Hope A-Rod gets her scoring started against New Zealand … and then goes on a run! Here are Grahame Jones, Grant Wahl, and Jamie Trecker on the USWNT … and Jennifer Doyle on Germany-Nigeria (sounds like Nigeria would be a fun team to watch and gave Germany all they could handle).

Don’t forget to vote in the new poll … and watch (if work doesn’t interfere … dang it) Tuesday’s game (7:45 AM ET).

Deer Island ViewIn more local news, Dewd and RPE just headed off to Deer Island (NB), HollyCornblog is at the lake (hopefully getting in some good sailing), and I’ve added a link under “The Finer Things” to Nancy Otto Glass – Nancy having been a Friday-night visitor here and someone whose work looked very interesting!

Turning to political randomness, I found this sad video on TPM depicting McCain’s decline. May it continue and be clear enough to everyone to assure, come November, that we’re not saddled with another 4 years of a Republican administration! And here’s the NY Times on McCain’s management style. I’m glad to hear that he hungers for information (how odd, huh?) but his management of his campaign doesn’t bode well for governance … and we’ve surely had enough of shoot-from-the-hip style chief executives … haven’t we?

Speaking of him … how embarrassing … his continuing presence on the world stage! Check out the photo gallery. January 20 can’t come fast enough!

And on the embarrassment-and-beyond front, Boltgirl must’ve been reading my mind on Friday night when she posted about John Edwards. I talked myself out of being suspicious of his smooth patter so many times … only to find out that the suspicion was right-on. (At least Bill Clinton wasn’t quite as self-righteous as John-Boy.) I have to say it makes me wonder about Elizabeth a little, too – the extent and quality of her ambitions for him. I don’t actually care about what people do with their private lives – EXCEPT when they are being hypocritical in some way. That kind of dissonance really fries me! Lots more on the whole sordid affair on The Huffington Post

Oh yeah – and in the meanwhile, Michael Phelps has his first gold, with a performance breaking his own world record!

USWNT Notches a Win

After Carli Lloyd’s goal in the first half, the score held and the USWNT defeated a good Japan squad 1-0 to gain three points and move into second place in their group. Next up, New Zealand on Tuesday at 7:45 AM ET. Here are some comments from Pia et al (from the USSF site).

Here in Canterbury we enjoyed watching the game with our friend Alice. The team definitely is looking like it’s coming around – but there are still too many give-aways and impatient, long passes. I thought that HAO did a great job on the right – and Angela Hucles and two or three beautiful passes that nearly cut A-Rod loose. Still, I’d like to see the US possess the ball the way Japan was in the final third … and FINISH! Hopefully Pia is right and with each game, they are improving. So far, that does appear to be the case – but with the Norway game, they set the bar pretty low for themselves.

In other soccer news, Germany defeated Nigeria 1-0, Norway defeated New Zealand 1-0, Canada tied China 1-1, Brazil defeated North Korea 2-1, and Sweden prevailed over Argentina 1-0 for their first win.  (What’s up with Sweden, BTW?  I was expecting them to be where Norway is at the moment …)

I’ll get a table going with the Group standings on the USWNT page if I have time today!

On the B-ball side – the US defeated Czechoslovakia (in a 97-47 blowout) to record their first win of the 2008 games. (Sadly, Bush was there … what a drag!)
