USWNT-Japan Underway

… and the US is looking better.  Here’s Boltgirl’s analysis of Wed’s game …

22nd minute and too much boom ball, still.  But overall better … and Brandi sounds happier, too!

PS  John Edwards?  Oh my god … the haircut really did reflect something significant about his soul …

Soccer Sundries and a US Women's B-ball Preview

The USWNT kicks off against Japan tomorrow morning at 5AM ET and will (hopefully) field a team with its heads screwed on more securely than on Wednesday! I like to think that Wednesday’s game was a collective test, to see whether “Boom Ball” really doesn’t work. Lesson learned, guys?

Gayle Bryan has written about Wednesday’s game in her Fair Game Blog, while on the WNT Blog it appears that after a very somber night-after, the players are energetically preparing for tomorrow’s match. Check my previous post for Beulah’s excellent match report (if you haven’t already read it).

And Lindsey Dolich has weighed in with her take on tomorrow’s prospects.

Keys for the United States will be mobility and space. The Japanese women will have a difficult time keeping up with the Americans’ extended, high-energy running game, especially in oppressive conditions. The Yanks also need to better stagger the wings and central midfielders so they provide more depth for curving runs and oncoming balls.

After the game, Sundhage acknowledged via e-mail she might change the lineup for Saturday’s match, but emphasized she wanted to give the starting personnel a second chance. It would be an intelligent move on Sundhage’s part if she were to break out playmaker Aly Wagner, possibly even starting her in place of Carli Lloyd to give the U.S.’ midfield a different look. Defender Lori Chalupny, who took a hit to the jaw after a collision with Hope Solo, is currently day-to-day. Chalupny suffered from blurred vision and dizziness and had to be replaced by Stephanie Cox. If Chalupny is ruled out for Saturday’s game, Sundhage should plug in Stanford University’s Rachel Buehler, a capable, strong defender with surprising speed.

Here are Pia, Carli and A-Rod previewing tomorrow’s match, and here (straight from the Jersey Shore) is a pre-Norway profile of Christie Rampone.

Meanwhile, the US men won their opener with a 1-0 victory over Japan. They sit atop their group heading to game two.

On the basketball front, here’s a nice preview of the tournament format, and the competition! The US women face the Czech Republic tomorrow morning at 8AM (if I’m reading the time correctly).

That’ll be fun to watch on the heels of the USWNT’s drubbing of Japan!!!

News from Beulah and Paris Hilton … a Header I Never Could Have Imagined Writing

First, the Paris part.  She’s participated in a video response to McCain’s campaign ad – you know – the one where he implies that Obama is just a celebrity.  It’s doing well on the net … and Paris has risen a notch in my estimation (although she still has a ways to go before she pulls even with Lindsay Lohan).

The truly BIG news is that Beulah has posted her match report!  Even if you are not into soccer and the USWNT, you should read this, as the writing is enjoyable, the humor outstanding (although humor about this game may be hard to come by) and the analysis illuminating.  I’m going to read it right now .. and will be back later!

Peace out.

HollyCornblog's Hops, Favre, Philly, and a Kai Tidbit

HollyCornblog’s HopsHollyCornblog has sent me a couple of photos of her growing hops (remember that huge hop trellis?). They’re looking nice and healthy, don’t you think?

(It’s also very important that I get HollyCornblog’s name in here more frequently – because with the Olympics underway, Pia is appearing all the time – and that pisses HollyCornblog off!)

More HollyCornblog HopsSo here’s that other hop picture (and I’ll mention again, these are HOLLYCORNBLOG’S HOPS!).

Nice, aren’t they?

In other news – Bret Favre is now with the Jets. The Phillies handily defeated the Marlins (yeah!). And here’s an interesting piece about Natasha Kai – acknowledging her as one of the few (if only) “out” American athletes at the Olympics (to date).

Oh yeah – and since the USWNT hasn’t scored yet (!) … you can still vote in the poll … it’s open ’til Saturday at 5AM, when the match-up with Japan kicks off.

Sooooo … What Now, Pia?

Norway 2, USWNT 0. The laments and wailing, the recriminations, the rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth have all begun and will continue until the USWNT plays like they can. Norway did it to us again … or perhaps more accurately, we did it to ourselves. According to many on-line pundits, the US program is dead and buried, Pia is on her way back to Sweden, and the WPS is going to flounder before it even starts. This is all based on a game that started with two bad miscues and, beyond that, pretty much ended in a tie.

I’m not saying that it was a good game – but for a team that had recently lost its dominant striker (the one that the team’s offense had been built around for the past 4 years) … and arguably its dominant player – I thought they battled well. I’m not excusing or ignoring or explaining away the miscues … they happened and the US looked silly. But to be down 2-0 within the first 5 minutes, without Abby and with the memory of the 2007 World Cup match with Brazil still-to-be-exorcised, I thought they did a pretty good job holding it together on the pitch and not letting things get any worse from that point on.

I thought it pretty darn cosmic that the first goal was on a miscue between Hope and her defense, and I am sure that the karmic irony is not lost on Hope … or Brianna Scurry … or anyone else on that squad. One analysis that I read put both goals on Hope (Kate Markgraf’s error notwithstanding). I’ll have to re-watch the game to see what I think.

Pia’s got her hands full, I imagine – getting everyone regrouped and figuring out her strategy for the upcoming match with Japan. The USWNT didn’t look organized or fired up in the Norway game. While that may be explicable under the circumstances, it’s worrisome. The center midfield, in particular, seemed weak – the team lost its shape much too easily – and the tendency of the USWNT to revert to booming the ball was an unfortunate hallmark of the match. I think the loss of Chalupny was another blow to the already-reeling team – and really hope she’ll be able to come back and play on Saturday.

You can’t change a team’s ethos in 7-months … but Pia seemed well on her way to making inroads. They’ve got to regroup and come up with a game plan that allows them to continue on their new path. Particularly now, with Abby gone, “boom ball” is a fruitless tactic. They can get it done. Let’s go, guys!

2-0 Norway

Beulah … what happened!?!

NOTE:  In the 2000 Olympics Norway lost the opener to the US 2-0 and went on to win the Gold!

Early Shift – Germany vs Brazil and Other Tidbits

Wow – the early shift brought two ties (Germany-Brazil 0-0; New Zealand-Japan 2-2) and a win by Canada over Argentina (2-1). Watching the Germany-Brazil match-up on line was a nice experience. No announcers – just the crowd noise (and the occasional grunts and other miscellaneous noises on my part). I thought Brazil had the better of it, especially in the second half. Had it not been for some nice play by Angerer (and the German goal post) the outcome would have been different.

I’m moving to the TV for the USWNT vs. Norway (and getting ready for work in the interim).  Here’s a nice article about Angela Hucles … for anyone who’s just hanging out waiting for 7:45!

Ten, nine, eight …

Grant Wahl has another excellent article on SI.com – this one focusing on Heather Mitts. Who knew that she ran with the bulls at Pamplona?

… and from the St. Petersburg Times, another take on this evolving USWNT – this by John Romano. He offers a nice summary of the challenges faced by this team and its coach:

Heading into the Beijing Games, about half the players who stood on the podium together in Greece are gone. The United States has changed coaches — twice. Along with the major roster makeover, there was a minor mutiny within the ranks. And three weeks ago, it lost Wambach to a broken leg.

And then from SoccerAmerica Daily, we’ve got some nice quotes from Pia … who sounds positive and realistic … and understated in a way that makes me feel very hopeful (having seen her in action in Boston with the Breakers). We shall see!

There’s lots of Oly-related “stuff” on the WPS site. And speaking of the Breakers – there will be a live chat with Lisa Cole tomorrow morning before and during the USWNT-Norway game! Here’s the link for the Breakers chat schedule (Tony DiCicco will be joining the fun in the next two games.)
