Don't Forget – Just One More Day to Vote!

Make your TWO top picks in the poll.  I’m curious to see how accurate we are, as the USWNT kick off it’s Olympic Soccer run tomorrow morning at 7:45 AM (ET) on MSNBC.  (It’ll be on the web as well.)

This is a good one – Leslie Osbourne interviewing her USWNT teammates before the last Brazil game.  (Certainly bittersweet, seeing Wambach, knowing what’s in store!)

Countdown to Norway … Study Up!

I’m back from my quick road trip … which was very successful and included a drive through the Delaware Water Gap region – an area I haven’t visited in years. It was quite beautiful – more so than I remembered (from driving through in my childhood). Much of it has been reclaimed as park land now – and so is looking a lot more pristine than in the bad old days! As I drove home yesterday evening I was thinking how amazing – a 15 1/2 hour trip that either went through (or skirted) the Green Mountains, the Catskills, and the Poconos … and even the Whites (via Mondanock).

Now, the major item on my horizon is soccer! Tomorrow beings us the USWNT vs. Norway in their Olympic opener … as well as Germany vs. Brazil (the other “big” match-up of the day). It is going to be fascinating to see how the USWNT responds to the pressure of the situation, the loss of Wambach. Pia’s continued tenure may be riding on how the team does (her contract just runs through the Oly’s at this point) and the team is surely looking to get rid of the bad taste of the Women’s World Cup. There are a ton of articles on the internet as the match approaches, and Continue reading

Back with the Pack … etc.

Yes, Brett Favre is going to compete for his old job … and in this excellent commentary by Tom Curran, I find a good summary of the whole danged episode. I was too tired of Brett’s familiar ambivalence to pay a lot attention to the furor. Now I am caught up … and just in time to revise my Fantasy Football rankings in the quarterback slot!

In other sports updates, here’s the US Women’s Olympic Basketball schedule. The women defeated Latvia Sunday 84-74, with Sylvia Fowles leading the offensive charge with 13 points. This is a game preliminary to the Olympics – part of the FIBA Diamond Ball Tournament. (I’ll need to study up on this, as I don’t know how – or whether – it relates to the Olympics. At the very least I can tell you that a win is a win is a win. How’s that?) The US faces Russia today – a squad that includes Svetlana Abrosimova and Becky Hammon.

On the soccer front, Beulah has said that she will not be posting an article about the second US-Brazil match, but will be aiming to write up as many of the USWNT’s Olympic matches as she can.

From BigSoccer, here are the AP’s picks for the soccer medal winners …

Women
GOLD–Germany
SILVER–Brazil
BRONZE–United States

Men
GOLD–Argentina
SILVER–Brazil
BRONZE–United States

My picks? I really do think the USWNT can do it – and I have Brazil with the silver over Germany. On the men’s side, I haven’t a clue … but were the US to medal, from what I’ve read, I suspect it would be a big deal and perhaps a bigger surprise.

The Phillies won on Sunday night and put some distance between themselves and the Mets and Marlins (both of whom lost).

That’s about all I know today, as I head off for a LONG drive to Stroudsburg, PA … to pick up a puppy for a friend.  (At 20-something, this trek would have been nothing at all.  We’ll see how it goes at 50-something!)

Peace out.

Hillary and the Convention, McCain and Oil, and an Obama-nation!

John Tomasic has put up a nice piece (and interesting video) on the Huffington Post about Hillary and Hillary supporters … as we head toward the convention. It certainly appears that HRC has accepted the Obama nomination and is working with the DNC on moving forward in a unified way.

In the meantime, John McCain is droning on oh-so-disingenuously about off-shore drilling and how it’s our salvation. I hate hearing that Obama is softening his position and hope it reflects nothing more than a nod to the political winds. Boltgirl has posted a very interesting piece about the whole “oil thing” (shortage, high prices, you name it) that I urge you to read. It’s titled: Emirates or Exxon: Either Way You Take It in the Shorts.

Listen to Rachel Maddow on the real scandal of American Politics … the lies of the McCain campaign. Her point – why is it not a scandal that lies are so consistently being told?

Go Rachel! Will the press in general pick up on this? Will the lier get into trouble for lying? Will these tactics continue to go over? McCain himself was a victim of the Bushies using these tactics. McCain has sold his soul (assuming he had one). He is like the prisoner of war who eventually comes to side with his torturers. Hmmm.

One last thing … a political question/comment from a co-worker. I just love it!

Question: When Obama wins in November, what will we have?

Answer: An Obama-nation!

(Unfortunately, the term has been picked up by the religious right and other wingnuts in totally predictable fashion … ) Too bad – I thought it was a clever play on people’s irrational fears. Little did I know how powerful irrationality continues to be. Scary stuff!

Sports Saturday (Sorry Non-Sports Fans) … It's Soccer, McNabb, and Other Stuff

Pia at the Great Wall!On the USWNT front, Lindsey Dolich has posted a nice preview on ESPNsoccernet about this post-Abby team. Abby’s injury “forces the issue” as far as the USWNT’s transformation goes. And I have my suspicions that the “liberating” aspects of the change may be quite strong for this team that has played laborious and “ugly” soccer for so many years now. I also agree heartily with Lindsey’s comment about the difficulty other teams will have scouting this new, unpredictable, evolving USWNT. Pia seems to have a great way of framing things as “positives” – and from everything I read, the team seems on board with that. I look forward to an exciting Olympics, with the USWNT making a good run for the gold.

That opening Germany-Brazil match-up should be fascinating, too! I haven’t seen yet whether it will be televised. Probably not – but it should be streaming somewhere on the web. (Wednesday morning will find me, laptop in lap, watching the USWNT and tracking Germany-Brazil … for sure!)

Meanwhile the USWNT had training this morning (probably long over by now) and a free day tomorrow. Then it’s two more trainings before the opening match. They may want to watch out for spies! Continue reading

August … if we must!

First, it’s pronounced Soond-HAGH-eh. (You still have ’til 8/6 to practice and get it right! Let’s all give it our best shot, okay?) And for hardcore Pia fans, here are her career tournament stats (from the FIFA site).

Second – don’t forget to vote in the USWNT poll over there in the right-hand sidebar. I believe that you can change your vote if you want … and remember, you can pick two choices. (Where are all the Tasha Kai fans, anyway?)

The WNBA has started its month-long break, as the national team competes in Beijing. (I promise to step it up on this front … promise! )

Manny is in LA – and I think the Phillies were wise to pass on this one. Phew!

Here’s a nice article about Stephanie Cox’ roller-coaster ride to Beijing 2008!

And CharlieHopbrew has paid us a brief visit. He’s on his way to try out a kayak in Contoocook this morning. (HollyCornblog is hoping that he’ll come home with it … I’ll keep you posted!)

In Memorium-Judy Popkin

The poem below is from The Writer’s Almanac for today: 7/31/08. So apt … I post it in memory of Judy Popkin who was born 8/19/53 and died after a nine year battle with breast cancer on 7/31/99.

We Remember!

Eating Together

by Kim Addonizio

I know my friend is going,
though she still sits there
across from me in the restaurant,
and leans over the table to dip
her bread in the oil on my plate; I know
how thick her hair used to be,
and what it takes for her to discard
her man’s cap partway through our meal,
to look straight at the young waiter
and smile when he asks
how we are liking it. She eats
as though starving—chicken, dolmata,
the buttery flakes of filo—
and what’s killing her
eats, too. I watch her lift
a glistening black olive and peel
the meat from the pit, watch
her fine long fingers, and her face,
puffy from medication. She lowers
her eyes to the food, pretending
not to know what I know. She’s going.
And we go on eating.

McCain's Britney Ad a New Low … and It Backfires!

John McCain’s campaign launched an ad that accuses Barack Obama of being more like a celebrity than a leader. Interestingly, in this piece for The Atlantic, Marc Ambinder details the reaction of John Weaver (former McCain strategist and friend) to these tactics.

I agree. What McCain had going for him was that he seemed a different kind of politician. It’s tough to maintain that premise while running those ads.

As an aside … if you watch the MSNBC video, it’s interesting to see how very awkward and uncomfortable McCain seems as he struggles with speaking and reading at the same time. The similarities to Dubya just keep coming … and the country can’t tolerate another 4 years. As the Cowardly Lion would say … no way, no how!

Meanwhile, Barack has hit back. And in a great Huffington Post post, we see that Britney and John McCain are far more similar than Britney and Barack, it seems. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPEV6twzxmE&e

Some USWNT Updates and Other News …

Pia at the Great Wall! The USWNT and Coach Pia Sundhage are settled in China (Qinhuangdao to be exact) training and doing a little touring, as you can see.

The WNT Blog is proving to be a very entertaining source of information for USWNT aficionados. Check it out. It’s often updated these days, as the team settles in and gets ready for their 8/6/08 opening game against Norway.

Here’s Grant Wahl’s take on this team and its chances … and some interesting, brief reflections by a couple of players on the team’s evolution. This is the first place where I’ve read, so clearly stated, how they felt about the old Greg Ryan “boom ball” style of play. Speaking of Greg Ryan … nah, forget it.

From the USSF site, here is a recent interview with USWNT coach Pia Sundhage. Her comments on losing Abby Wambach a few days before the USA left for China:

“As you know, she is a great player. It’s like Brazil losing Marta or Germany losing (Birgit) Prinz. However, when I started here in December we talked about the team. And I’ve said it many times in many different ways, it’s not about one player or one coach, it’s about the team. So the way we’ve prepared for the Olympics, it’s a little bit easier to adjust. We will adjust the attack because Abby is not here and of course she is a great presence, but I think the team has to respond. We are well prepared even though we don’t have Abby Wambach. There is a great spirit in this team and everyone is looking forward to the games.

“I think everyone will step up a little bit, that counts for the players and coaching staff. It would be foolish just to move on and not recognize she’s gone. But at the same time, we can’t put too much emphasis on Abby Wambach, even though she is a star. We will put the emphasis on the team.”

Well said, Pia!
