Cognitive Dissonance USA Style: Women Make Strides, and DV is on the Rise

Even as we celebrate women athletes heading to Beijing to compete in the Olympics, it must be sadly noted that domestic violence and deaths of US women at the hands of those “closest” to them is on the rise. With the blindly bullheaded Bush steering our ship, we arrogantly export “democracy” and tout “family values” … meanwhile ignoring/denying the violence and dysfunction within our own house (or actually supporting it, in that endearingly indirect fundamentalist way). The violence affects everyone – be it fatal or not.

The bloody trail of those deaths, along with injuries, crisscrosses the nation each year and overshadows women’s daily lives.

Nearly one-third of all U.S. women report experiencing violence from a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in their lives, according to the San Francisco-based Family Violence Prevention Fund.

The impact of violence spreads through families, health care services and the workplace, and is associated with far higher disease risk.

Deval Patrick has declared a state of “domestic violence emergency” in Massachusetts, where the death rate “nearly tripled to 42 in 2007 from 15 in 2005.” No one in the current Federal Administration is going to recognize or address the problem … which is all the more reason to work hard to bring anyone but a Republican into office in November!

In more upbeat news, we have a nice piece about the USWNT’s ARod, a piece by Michael Lewis of the NY Daily News with an overview of the USWNT’s Olympic chances, and a bit of Natasha Kai love from Melissa on the “WCB”. (And I am in TOTAL agreement about John Mayer, Melissa!)  And here’s the latest word from Beulah, in her forum (as Princess Sparkle Pony might say … “Yay!”):

I’ll try to get the July 16 match done this weekend. I’ll do my best to be more timely during the Olys but be warned that I have a conference out of town in the middle of it so there might be a game I don’t do/or am late with.

Finally … Manny in Philly??? Another Bad Boy on Broad Street? I don’t know … I’ve still got PTSD from the whole TO episode, myself.

WNBA, USWNT … and Dubya's Very Own Monica!

From the WNBA, here’s a report on how this year’s crop of rookies are faring. From Candace Parker we, of course, expected great. It’s awesome, however, to see the impact of the Charde Houston’s and Candice Wiggins’ and Nicky Anoskie’s of the group. (The Minnesota Lynx seem to have fared especially well on the rookie front!)

Meanwhile, I’ve been aiming to highlight the Buddy Blog for some time – but other things have intruded. This is the back-and-forth between current rivals/former teammates/current Olympic teammates … Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. It’s a hoot. The latest post is about Olympic preparations (and a tad more serious than most).

On the USWNT front, we’ve got Andrea Canales’ commentary on Sideline Views.

And then, of course, there’s the Justice Department … I guess it’s now required that every administration have a Monica??!!

Monday Morning Political Stuff

This article and election map on the Huffington Post argues that Obama is going to win handily in November – not even close. Boy do I hope this is true!

And the projected win is in the context of media bias slightly favoring McCain … according to a study referenced in this recent piece by James Rainey for the LA Times.

Even with more tolerance from the media, McCain continues to fumble opportunities, as in his appearance on “This Week” yesterday.  Being interviewed from his Arizona ranch, he apparently offered up a tempting melange of vague pronouncements, sharp attacks, and confusing misstatements.  Keep it up, John – we love it!

As I continued my meandering I came upon this disturbing piece about rumors of a John Edwards affair.

Zennie’s Zeitgeist (a very interesting-looking blog) offers a good (albeit slightly dated) summation in both print and video. Maybe I’m just contributing to rumor-mongering by putting this sort of thing up on my blog. It seems to me, however, that John Edwards could easily put it all to rest if he wanted to. The fact of the rumors, and the fact that he has not squelched them contributes to a small uneasiness that I have always had about him. The message was always great – but the messenger never quite added up … sorry, John.

While I was listening to Zenie, I noticed a great olympic widget on his site. I’ll be putting it up (Olympic news) as well as some others, maybe, as soon as I finish this up.  Let me know if the widgets screw up my sidebars on your browser, okay?  (Thanks!)

Oh, and speaking of the Oly’s – don’t forget to vote on the JordanCornblog USWNT poll!

Pia Dreams, USWNT News, and a HollyCornblog Update, Too!

Just to keep you up to date … the Red Sox lost and the Phillies won … and there’s nothing from Beulah yet. Rest assured that I’ll post as soon as I see anything!

Last night I dreamed that I had a quick breakfast with Pia Sundhage and April Heinrichs. (April joined us midway through our meal … and it got a little awkward at that point, as I recall.) Anyway, as you may have guessed, Pia was a very pleasant breakfast companion. I advised her against having the team do so many suicides. She was very open to my ideas and decided, on the spot, to cut that drill out of the team’s training regimen. (At that point I pretty much panicked, as I wasn’t expecting her to actually listen!)

I guess if fitness is an issue for the USWNT in Beijing, we’ll now know who to blame!

There’s LOTS of USWNT news on the WNT Blog, including:

Boxxy and Rampone at the Great Wall

  • The TV schedule for the USWNT vs. Norway Olympic opener on 8/6/08. It’s on MSNBC and Universal HD at 7:30 AM ET. Kick-off is at 7:45 AM ET. (Tough schedule for left-coasters!)
  • Lots more about settling in for the duration in China!

The Philadelphia Inquirer has a nice piece about Carli Lloyd stepping up as a player Continue reading

A Little Louis Armstrong (or Some Paper Clips) With Your Coffee This Morning!

I stumbled on this offering by Josh Marshall on the TPM website and wanted to share the song Louis Armstrong & Jack Teagarden singing Rockin’ Chair at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958), as well as the info about all the live performances that can be found on You Tube – a gold mine!

And speaking of resources, have you heard about Snag Films? Here’s what they say about themselves …

At SnagFilms.com, you can watch full-length documentary films for free, but we also make it easy for you to take our films with you and put them anywhere on the web. When you embed a widget on your web site, you open a virtual movie theater and become a “Filmanthropist.” Donate your pixels and support independent film! And click on “info” on any widget to learn more about that film and a related charity you can also support.

With a library of 225 documentaries, and rapidly growing – browse by topic or go through the alphabet from A-Z – you’re bound to find films that resonate with your interests. There is a widget for EVERY film, so any film you like can be snagged. To learn more about snagging go here. Enjoy your visit, snag a film, and keep checking back because we’re adding great news titles daily.

Click here for more about SnagFilms.

It sounds like a great idea to me … and I’ll be adding a widget for the great movie “Paper Clips” shortly (unless I run into a snag)!

Nice USWNT Video, and Lieberman's Back (And I Don't Mean Joe)

Kudos to Nancy Lieberman who, at age 50, showed her stuff in an appearance for the suspension and injury-depleted Detroit Shock last night. She scored no points, but made a no-look pass that brought the house down!

The Shock and the LA Sparks were both seriously understaffed due to suspensions and both lost their games last night. In a further blow, the first-place Shock lost Cheryl Ford for the season after she suffered a knee injury in Tuesday’s altercation. On a more upbeat note, the final three slots on Continue reading

McCain Continues to Flounder; USWNT Heads to China!

Just take a look at these images from McCain’s week (so far) … in comparison to the bits and bytes on the airwaves featuring Barack Obama. Almost makes me feel sorry for the Straight Talker.

Meanwhile, here’s an article from Scripps News Service about the newly-configured USWNT. I thought it was an interesting slant. As new leaders and new voices emerge, it will be fascinating to see how the team evolves.

Speaking of evolution, Andrea Canales, in Sideline Views, makes a case for the USWNT serving as an illustration of arrested development. For the most part, I am in agreement with her points about professional sports in general, and about the importance of a professional league. I also think she may be right-on about the Abby-dominated flavor of the team.

Maybe I’m naive and too easily buy into the PR line, but I don’t see the USWNT players as hothouse creatures protected from the real world. It seems to me that many of them are out there working to build careers and support themselves (and the new league). Some have been starting families – some do political work – some have played club soccer during down times (at least to my admittedly sketchy knowledge). The USSF has never been a particularly hospitable place for the USWNT – so to depict them as “protected” in that venue strikes me as odd. Then again, maybe I’m just cranky and over-reacting this morning.

Of Candace Parker Throwing Punches, Hills Hoists, and Just Showing Up

It sounds like the game between the Sparks and the Shock ended ugly last night. Candace Parker, Plenette Pierson, DeLisha Milton-Jones and Rick Mahorn were all ejected after a melee broke out in the final seconds. Meanwhile, in what could be a significant loss for the Shock, Cheryl Ford, who was trying to hold Pierson back, may have injured herself. As Lisa Leslie noted, this will get the WNBA a lot of attention – but not of the sort that they want.

In baseball action, the Phillies came from behind in the 9th and defeated the Mets to regain sole possession of first place in the NL East. All I can say is, when Utley starts hitting again, watch out world!

I’m still holding my breath for Beulah’s 7/16 match report … 😉  But in the meantime, here’s a very intriguing piece by Mark Zeigler on the USWNT and LWA (that’s Life Without Abby).  He sheds a bit more light on the mix of personalities on the team – and how this all might be a blessing in disguise.  No bad wishes for Abby here – but it’s something I’ve wondered about myself – how her dominance coupled with the Heinrichs/Ryan style of play, have shaped and in some ways stunted the growth of this team.  Stay tuned!

Some time ago I wrote a bit about making healthy choices. I was telling myself to just show up and to just do it. Now it’s about 6-months later Continue reading
