McCain's Geography (and Internet Travels), Hillary's VP Chances, and (Of Course) Some USWNT Soccer …

John McCain made another Bush-worthy geography gaffe yesterday – this time on “Good Morning America.” Sorry, John, Iraq and Pakistan don’t actually share a border. (As an aside, I’ve always wished that some brave member of the press would ask Bush, during a press conference, to point to Iraq on a map. Now that would be an interesting moment .. both watching Bush’s confusion and glimpsing a “brave member of the press.”)

Meanwhile, in other news of Mr. McCain … Andy Borowitz reports on his historic first visit to the internet in this excellent riposte!

On the Veep search front, the NY Times indicates that Hillary is being vetted – although she remains an unlikely choice by most reports.

In soccer news, I’m going to send you over to Boltgirl for some good updates on Abby and her injury. Check out the linked post, as well as earlier pieces. Gayle Bryan writes on her Fair Game Blog about Abby Wambach’s professionalism in the face of what has to be a monumental disappointment for her. And there’s also lots of stuff at the USSF site.

Graham Hays has posted a nice update on Cat Whitehill’s status as she rehabs from her ACL tear and contemplates watching the Olympics from the States.

And don’t forget Beulah’s report on the 7/13 match, either!

In international soccer, here’s Jocasta on this past weekend’s Sweden vs. Norway match-up. This was a final pre-Olympic tune-up for the Swedes, while Norway has another game against Germany on their plate.

That’s it for now … stay tuned, though … things are heating up!

Beulah's Match Report Is Up!

’nuff said!

Well, almost. Here’s the link to the 7/13/08 USWNT vs Brazil game report. (She says the next one is forthcoming … and I am not exactly … but close to … holding my breath!)

Monday Catch-Up

After a beautiful weekend away and a great visit with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew, there’s a lot to catch up on. I’m sure I’ll be back in the swing in a couple of days … but right now it’s pretty slow-going.

On the USWNT front, Lauren Cheney is replacing Abby on the roster, as the team regroups and gets ready to head to Beijing. Kate Markgraf still thinks the team can do it … and Carli Lloyd recently had a nice send-off from her hometown fans. According to this nice piece in the LA Times, the loss of Wambach will improve (and prove) the USWNT’s resilience (I tend to agree). Thankfully, they’ve been training to incorporate a more varied attack – and now’s the time that they need to put all that work to good use!

Here’s Andrea Canales’ take on the situation. If anyone can get this team up and running again -and instill the necessary confidence in everyone – most especially the strikers who’ll need to step up and score in this new Abby-less world, it’s Pia. Thank goodness the team was transitioning away from Ryan-style soccer when this happened!

On the WPS site we’ve got a blog post that links to some speculation that it’s bad WWC Karma that led to Abby’s broken leg. Looks like no one’s going to let that go easily!

Last, but certainly not least, here’s the commentary from Women’s Sports Nation … a new discovery and great new addition to my women’s sports/women’s soccer links!

IN world news (this is definitely going to take some serious catching up) I see that Obama is in Iraq now after a visit to Afghanistan. Here’s a nice article form the NY Times giving detail about Maliki’s comments on Obama’s plan for withdrawing US troops. And now I’m off …

JordanCornblog is Heading Home

Have you missed me?  😉

Hope you’re having a great weekend.  I’m heading back to NH from upstate NY (that’s HollyCornblog land) sometime today … and will surely be checking up on the BigSoccer discussion/speculation/trash-talking about the USWNT and more specifically, what to do without Abby.

For the “inside scoop” I’ll be checking the WNT Blog, too.

Saturday at the Lake

Still away … and here’s where I am …

Crystal Lake

The general plan is to read, swim, kayak, walk, eat, sleep.  The simple life.  We’ll also be sampling some single-hopped brews that HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew have been concocting.

Beulah?

I’m away – so can’t check Beulah’s site myself.  However, if she’s posted about either of the USWNT vs. Brazil games, you’ll find it here!

Meanwhile – if Beulah’s not posting, here’s some good stuff from FIFA and from the NY Times (by Jere Longman, no less) about Pia, the USWNT, and the Olympics.

USWNT Wins Match But Loses Wambach

In a game featuring lots of possession, lots of tough tackles, and lots to build on, the USWNT prevailed over Brazil, again by a 1-0 score. Unfortunately, they lost stalwart forward Abby Wambach who went down after a first half collision and, as it turns out, broke two bones in her leg. She’s gone for 12-weeks, by reports I’m seeing – and will need surgery to repair the breaks (and insert a titanium rod in her leg).  Here’s Mark Zeigler on the match and Abby’s injury!

This is a huge blow for the team, as well as (obviously) for Abby. A terrible thing – and had it happened during Greg Ryan’s tenure, I’d be saying that it’s curtains for any hopes of gold. With Pia at the helm there is much more potential for figuring out a way to make lemonade out of this. They’ve been working on a multi-pronged attack, on being unpredictable and on being brave. Here’s an opportunity to be amazing!

As far as the game was concerned … Natasha Kai scored the game-winner on a nice header after A-Rod’s refusal to give up on the play (and Kai’s grit, too) netted a Carli Lloyd free kick outside and to the side of the box.

The US possessed the ball better than in the previous Brazil game, but they still need to be more patient in the attacking third (IMHO). I thought that Lloyd looked great, and was also impressed with A-Rod’s tenacity and Chalupny’s steadiness. Solo is solid and you could really see how her feet offer the defense another option when settling in to bring the ball forward.

All in all, a good effort by the USWNT under what must have been very trying circumstances as they lost one of their key players. Take care, Abby!

Cindy McCain's Small Plane and Other Wednesday Wrinkles

Here’s Cindy McCain speaking about “the only way to get around in Arizona.” (This is way too easy … I think I’m starting to feel a tad mean-spirited and guilty.) I’ll get over it, though.

Mark Zeigler writes from San Diego about tonight’s USWNT vs. Brazil match-up … the second this week. On Sunday the USWNT pulled out a 1-0 win on the strength of A-rod’s second game-winning goal against Brazil. As part of their prep for tonight’s game, looks like the USWNT enjoyed some down time (and some Mexican fare) and Rachel Buehler’s house.

Here’s the USSF preview of tonight’s match.

I find no match report from Beulah yet … but will keep checking, rest assured! Meanwhile, a couple of folks over at BigSoccer have posted photos. Here’s Gayle Bryan’s collection from practice this past Saturday, from Fair Game. And here are htide’s flickr photos of the Brazil match-up.

Finally, I’ve been curious about how many New Jersey-ites are on the USWNT. Looks like we’ve got four … Tobin Heath (Basking Ridge), Heather O’Reilly (East Brunswick), Carli Lloyd (Delran) and Christie Rampone (Point Pleasant). Not bad for the Garden State!

Last but not least … HollyCornblog continues to hold out … refusing to sign-up for Facebook.  We’ll increase the pressure, and see what happens!

Happy B-day Arianna – Plus the Usual Soccer Stuff and Other Miscellany

Yes, according to The Writer’s Almanac, it’s Arianna Huffington’s birthday. Best wishes – and I’m glad your journey landed you in the blogosphere!

From the Huffington Post, here’s a good piece my Tom Matzzie about the ongoing lobbying  from big oil and the Bush administration to allow off-shore drilling. Using inflated oil prices and the usual fear-mongering, they’re making one last push for big gains while their cronies hold the reins of power. We’ve got to be vigilant and not let this happen. Remember WMD and Iraq? Let’s wait for another administration before making any big decisions about anything, okay!!??

Lots of news on the soccer front, including a new blog find – The Sideliner out of LA. Still nothing from Beulah, but I’ll keep checking!

I thought I had something from the Washington Post – but turns out it was an AP piece – and I don’t know what their status is right now (that whole messy business of charging bloggers for using AP fare).

Turning to San Diego’s Union Tribune, here is a great article about Stanford’s (and the USWNT’s) Rachel Buehler by Mark Zeigler.

Finally, my friend (and Carli fan) MLD has offered to drive to Delran, NJ on Friday for an ice-cream-flavor-unveiling by none other than Ms. Lloyd!

And last but not least, I’ve been exploring Facebook and learning the in’s and out’s of it all. Right now my personal struggle is convincing HollyCornblog to sign up.

Anyone with thoughts on the subject should feel free to share them.

USWNT Beats Brazil 1-0 on Goal by A-Rod! (That is the A-Rod Who Has NOT Been Linked With Madonna in the Press!)

Here’s the info. from the Feds, along with the post-game quote sheet. And here’s a nice summation by Pia on the style of play … gotta love it!

I think they have done great because it is such a short amount of time. I’ve been here for eight months or something like that and it usually takes two years, so I am very impressed with the way they try to play the kind of soccer, the philosophy I have. But you can see sometimes they get a little bit stressed. I think that sometimes they underestimate their quality because they really could keep the ball more often, and then play from the back. That’s my job, to make sure with my body language and tell them you are good enough to do it and you should dictate the tempo, and not the opponents.

There are lots and lots and lots of articles on line. I’ll post just a few that were good – in no particular order:

I’ll keep an eye out for any word from Beulah and post it as soon as I see it!
