What if a "President McCain" continues his downhill slide?

Here’s a variation of a Letter to the Editor I just sent out:

What if a “President McCain” continues his downhill slide?

The McCain we see today may not possess the quickness of mind and resilience shown by McCain eight years ago. If you question this, compare footage of him then and now.

A healthy and fully alert president, known for volatility and erratic choices, presents one set of problems. Electing an inconsistent and hot-tempered president in possible physical and/or mental decline escalates the hazards. Here are some questions I ask myself:

How would chemotherapy/radiation for recurrent melanoma interfere with a President McCain’s decision-making? If erratic behavior intensifies, who determines if it’s dementia? What level of crisis would spur intervention? Who would establish succession in these fiercely partisan times, given questions about Palin’s capability? How protracted a process would this devolve into? What level of nationwide dissent might arise? How effectively would it be resolved? And how would our nation fare with a host of crises during a lengthy vacuum in leadership?

Questions of competence can tear families apart. If taking car keys from a driver in early dementia ranges from difficult to impossible, how easy would it be to take the White House away from a strong-willed president with loose wires?

Thanks Bill – I certainly share your hopes!

My question re succession was based upon an Op Ed column (Frank Rich’s?) in the NY Times prior to the Vice-Presidential debates. The author predicted that if McCain were elected, then unable to serve for any reason, Congress would step in to determine if Sarah Palin were fit to assume his responsibilities. But I have been unable to track that article down so far. And perhaps the writer was merely suffering from “lowered expectations” re the divine Sarah. Surely the Vice-Presidential debate will have taken care of that! At any rate, I appreciate your setting the record straight. Here’s hoping we don’t have a non-functional President by anyone’s standards to set the process in motion.

An intriguing set of questions to be sure. Hopefully we will not have to answer them, except here in the abstract. Some of your questions, I believe, are already addressed in the Constitution. If McCain were to become non-functional as President then the his Vice President, presumably Sarah Palin, would become President. The only course open for remedy then would be impeachment if she cannot handle the job. This, of course, would be very disruptive and time consuming. It most certainly would not be as simple as taking keys away from a person with early dementia.
