WPS Play-Off's: Round 2

Ready for round 2 of the play-offs?  Sky Blue and the Athletica are set to square off in St. Louis – 7PM ET tonight on FSC.  After rough starts, both teams find themselves in contention to take on the LA Sol this weekend.

On the rough start front, Sky Blue definitely has the upper hand, as is recapped in this article from the NY Times … and this from the Weekly Pitch … and this from Jacqueline Purdy on ESPN.

My take?  If Jen Branum is healthy (her knee looked iffy at the end of the Freedom match) and Kai’s shoulder holds up, I take Sky Blue over the Athletica (who will be suffering with the loss of their all-star Eniola Aluko to England and the Euro’s).  It’s a story line that is just too good not to root for (unless you’re from St. Louis, of course).

Here’s Beulah’s report on the Freedom-Sky Blue matchup … excellent and entertaining as always!  Even if you’re not a soccer fan, this will pique your interest.

Hat’s off to Sky Blue … keep it going!

And today I’m remembering Judy Popkin, on what would have been her 56th birthday.  We miss you, Jude!

The Summer Day

Mary Oliver

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean–

the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down–

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

With your one wild and precious life?
