Rocky Top Stop

I didn’t stay up to watch it, but Tennessee looked wild (verging on out-of-control) at the start of their game with Ball State last night. Congrats to Ball State on the upset – and good luck to Pat on harnessing the energy and talent of this group. (If she hasn’t been able to in a year, ya gotta wonder …)

Here are the PHC standings as of this morning – with Mo coming on strong on the men’s side, and Cynthia maintaining her lead on the women’s:

Canterbury Madness

As Siena battles Louisville … and Mo moves his way up in the brackets … and Cynthia continues to dazzle on the national stage … another day of March Madness leaves the dogs and cats of Canterbury relatively unmoved. What’s with that?

Wow! Look Who's Number 1!!

I’m not talking about JordanCornblog being # 1 in the men’s bracket this morning.  While that’s true, to point it out would be unseemly.

No, I am talking about Cynthia who is perfect on the women’s side and ranks among the #1 scorers anywhere and EVERYWHERE this morning!  (Right at the moment, the calculations on the women’s bracket are incorrect and a number of the brackets I’ve checked are screwed up [scoring-wise] – but Cynthia is perfect, any way you look at it.)  So I’ll hold off on posting the women’s results until they are fixed.  In the meantime, here are the men’s results as we get ready to see who the final 8 heading to the Sweet 16 are!

Meanwhile, in other news … say what? Other news? I checked out the other news and it was all pretty dire. I’m gonna just sit tight here and wait for the NY Times to fix the women’s bracket.

We’ll just ignore the “other news” this morning. (A beautiful one, I might add!)

Gorgeous Poem for Today

This is a wonderful offering from The Writer’s Almanac this morning …

… as we remember Bob Hull, with much love!

Poem on a Line by Anne Sexton, ‘We are All Writing God’s Poem’

by Barbara Crooker

Today, the sky’s the soft blue of a work shirt washed
a thousand times. The journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step. On the interstate listening
to NPR, I heard a Hubble scientist
say, “The universe is not only stranger than we
think, it’s stranger than we can think.” I think
I’ve driven into spring, as the woods revive
with a loud shout, redbud trees, their gaudy
scarves flung over bark’s bare limbs. Barely doing
sixty, I pass a tractor trailer called Glory Bound,
and aren’t we just? Just yesterday,
I read Li Po: “There is no end of things
in the heart,” but it seems like things
are always ending-vacation or childhood,
relationships, stores going out of business,
like the one that sold jeans that really fit-
And where do we fit in? How can we get up
in the morning, knowing what we do? But we do,
put one foot after the other, open the window,
make coffee, watch the steam curl up
and disappear. At night, the scent of phlox curls
in the open window, while the sky turns red violet,
lavender, thistle, a box of spilled crayons.
The moon spills its milk on the black tabletop
for the thousandth time.

After Round One … the Madness Continues

Oh my god!  Wisconsin?  Cleveland State? Siena?

Patti is tearing it up here … and the good news for her is that with Arizona’s upset of Utah, she’s now got her 13 seed facing a 12. Who’d a thunk!

Meanwhile, Doris leap-frogged over a few people with her crafty picks … but somehow missed Siena.  Where’s the NY love?

Of course it’ll all shift wildly again … Dewd, Alice and Mike, take heart!

And meanwhile the women get underway at noontime today.  Vermont vs. UConn?  Anybody got VT?

Obama Dissing the Women?

Still no women’s bracket, so far as I can tell, from the Prez.

Come on, Barack – where’s the women’s hoops love?

Seriously, write to the President here and let him know that he’s sending a skewed message but just doing the men’s NCAA Tournament bracket.

Maybe remind him that he has a wife and two daughters … and that his wife looks like she could hit a three with the best of them!

I wrote last night … and will write again right now.  He’s running out of time … and some staffer really needs to work this into his schedule!

Or Michelle … stop digging that garden for a second and shove a bracket under his nose!

Otherwise, it’s gonna feel like he was just using us.

PS, thanks for the link, ChristoperCorblog (aka Mad Dog).

PPS – As an argument for NOT dissing the women, check out where Cynthia is relative to Tyler, Morgan and Murray in our standings … that’s one family’s story … 😉

Morning 1 of the Madness

Fascinating day of b-ball yesterday – and a big scare for Villanova fans!  But we survived and I am recalling what a great soccer coach once said about tournaments … “The first game is the hardest.”  Let’s hope that’s the case.

Here’s a link to our Men’s Bracket.  Looks to me like they aren’t factoring in bonus points … but maybe that’ll come.  I’ll do some research and see what I can find out.

Speaking of finding things out … we have a new member (aside from Barack).  Who is teapock?  Inquiring minds … 😉

Anyway, here are the basics, at the midpoint of round 1 …

So, Mo, you’re tied with Barack, but so far it looks like you did better by Rachel than you did for yourself.

Let the trash talking begin!

😉

Or just watch the champs (2007 version) dance to Soulja Boy!

… and So It Begins … The Madness, That Is!

Thanks, AMR, for the link to this very special bracket!  (I must say I’m a bit disappointed to see that he didn’t also complete a bracket on the women’s side.  There’s still time, Mr. President!)

I am also trying to figure out if there is any way to get his picks into our pool here … but I fear I’m out of time (as actual, real work is soon going to interrupt my blogging very, very shortly).

Anyway … there’s still time to join the ranks here before the games get underway.  Just go to the March Madness page and click the link!

Alice … where are you?

Oh … and who is bigflanman?  Just curious … 😉

Of course I am rushing today … but should have time to be more focused tonight and tomorrow.

Paula Eder has a lovely post on The Time Finder this morning – helpful thoughts on Natasha Richardson’s sad passing (which continues to haunt me here).  It certainly does make me think about the preciousness of each moment … and in that there is a gift.
