Other Saturday Stuff

Aside from brackets and upsets and Mo making good on his trash talk (so far) what is going on in the world?

Hillary is in Mexico … and here’s a cool map (posted by truth on Main Street USA), depicting her travels (and in some fashion, Obama’s foreign policy priorities, one has to think … although it’s early yet).  Sad to say, truth (aka bigflanman) is taking a bit of a beating in the brackets at the moment.  Kinda like the previous 8 years, eh truth?

Check this out – from the Raw Story – the rap battle between Stephen Colbert and Michael Steele … watch it!  Amazing piece of editing!

And on the “What can brown do for you” front – thanks, UPS!

For your calendars … the Women’s TV schedule over the next several days … (I’ve shifted the times to Eastern …)

Oh, and at 339, the Prez would be in 11th place in our bracket – sandwiched right between plrock and ddymski. (If you talk to him, could you please give him a little grief about not filling out his women’s bracket?)

Oh Snap!

As of this time (9:47 ET) Friday night, Mo is in FIRST PLACE in the Men’s bracket!

Can it last through the night?

We shall see …

Madness Update-Halfway to the Elite Eight!

The Wildcats pulled it out – beating Duke quite handily in the end.  Meanwhile, those who had Missouri (Dewd, HollyCornblog) have reason to celebrate!  UConn moved to the Elite Eight with seeming ease, while Pitt looked dicey (as they have all tournament) but pulled it out in the end (as they have all tournament).

Things are shifting a bit in the brackets … with Mo in the hunt, Rachel, Holly and Dewd moving up, and Obama’s bracket taking a hit, as he had both Duke and Memphis winning last night.  (If he were playing with us, he’d be right between Patti and nyeanh (Alice) at 279.)

Onward!

Good WPS News

I’m liking what I’m reading in this piece from the Washington Post which has Sunday’s attendance at the opening game between the LA Sol and the Washington Freedom at >10,000.  (And I don’t think that’s because Mia is going to be there – tho’ she will.)  It may have more to do with he fact that Marta will be there.

Whatever … 10,000 + is not too shabby.

Here are links to each team’s opening day roster.

And tonight?  Tonight we’ve got some b-ball to watch!  Should be interesting to see how it all plays out, and where the cards have fallen come morning.

Thursday – Can It Already be Thursday?

I was going to get caught up on sleep (in the brief lull between bouts of b-ball) last night.  But instead I got caught up in on-line work.  Thoroughly enjoyed it – but sleep suffered, as it often does.

A quick survey of the news has the WPS teams finalizing their rosters … and I see that Brandi made the cut for the FC Gold Pride (out in the Bay Area).  It’ll be interesting to see how she fares in the midfield.  (I’d expect to see a 40-year-old on defense – but Brandi isn’t your typical 40-year-old.)

For the Breakers, there were no big surprises on the final cut list – at least not from my perspective.  And it looks like the Freedom finally signed Lisa DeVanna (Australia) who is going to be great fun to watch – especially against Marta on Sunday evening!  Here’s the Red Stars’ roster, too.

I started checking the national news just now and you know what?  I just won’t go into it.  The GOP is doing its usual lying, divisive crap and time is too precious to spend exploring the famililar terrain.  Obama, just keep your eye on the prize and keep plugging away.  Let the stridency echo in the emptiness – don’t respond.  It just makes their voices sound more shrill – their arguments less and less plausible.

Oh, but here’s an article HollyCornblog sent me – about Cheney and his war crimes.  I don’t see it happening – especially not with the mess our economy is in at the moment.  But one can dream!

On the b-ball front, who’s playing tonight?

All Set on the Women's Sweet 16

Cynthia continues her run, but I predict bumpier days ahead, as she’s got 3 of her teams out of the Elite 8 from the get go.  In second place, jclough325 (aka Jeff) looks to be in good shape, although he starts the Elite 8 down 2, while JordanCornblog (aka moi), in third, could pick up some ground (starting the next round with only one of her picks out of the running).

Taking a bit of a nosedive was pippa, while Left Coast Jazz (aka Gary) and Rachel (thank you very much, Mo) leap-frogged over a few other folks to now sit comfortably in 4th and 5th places respectively.  The other Dymski’s in the bracket (Don and ML) are holding pretty steady at 5h and 6th Tuesday, and down one notch each today.  At the other end of the bracket, Dewd, dsabler (aka Doris), bigflanman (aka truth) and Murray are getting to know one another … while Holly sits steady at #11 and Mad Dog the same at #9, plrock (aka Paula) has moved up a few spots, and boltgirl moved a smidge (12 to 13).  Losing one place was brigitte19 (Brigitte), now at 8, while bentwisle (BJ) moved up a notch to 15.  Patti, Mike and nyeanh (aka Alice) are sticking together .. but sinking a bit.  And Tyler has made a nifty leap, from 17th to 12th, while Mo moved up a couple of spots (but has yet to really get going).

On the actual game-playing front, the early games were total blow-outs, with the exception of Duke’s loss to Michigan State in Coach Joanne P. McCallie’s homecoming. (Welcome home, Coach P!)  It was the first time in years that I found myself rooting for Duke – guess THAT’s the kiss of death, eh?

To Tweet or Not to Tweet

Boltgirl hates itThe Offside loves it … what is it?

In-game tweeting by WPS players.

Me?  I haven’t made up my mind (surprise).  It seems like a potential distraction for the players .. but for someone not likely to get into a game, what difference?

And I like the idea of a MatchTracker like “view” of Breakers’ games (not to mention other WPS games) when they are away and not on TV.

So overall I think it’s an interesting, cutting edge move by the WPS .. and I predict that even boltgirl may sneak an occasional peek at Twitter … when it’s the only way to get an in-game update on how the Red Stars are doing!

A Night of Upsets

As someone here said (who was watching her scores plummet last night), “It wasn’t a good night for higher seeds.”

Cynthia continues to hold steady at the top, tho’ even she missed that Purdue, Rutgers, Arizona State trifecta. A few of us got one (or two … Don, Mike, BJ!) of those right – but I don’t think anyone got all three.

Here’s where we stand this morning … as we head into the final night of the women’s second round.  Can Ball State pull off another shocker?  Can Mo and Murray (last year’s winners) start to pull themselves out of the cellar?  Can Cynthia hold onto her lead or will Jeff catch her?  Stay tuned?

Before We Continue the Madness, a Brief WPS Commercial Break

Yup – the long-awaited kick off of the Women’s Professional Soccer league is THIS SUNDAY.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieY77v5z2EM

It’s Marta vs. Abby Sunday Night 3/29/09 … 6PM ET on the Fox Soccer Channel.  (Here’s the whole schedule …)

And here are the Breakers scrimmaging the Red Stars …

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gusSIwNWgmg

The next WPS franchise will be in Philly!  (Whoo hoo!)  Chester, PA, to be specific (in a soccer-specific stadium.)  Wonder if the Breakers will lose Mitts to her old haunts …

And here are lots of options for following the WPS on Twitter from Soccer Science.  I think I’m with Boltgirl on the whole idea of Tweeting from the bench (and definitely on the skorts).  But tweets from non-players who are in the thick of it will be welcome.  (I have been thoroughly enjoying Rebecca Lobo’s commentary on Twitter lately.)

Here are the latest WPS transactions as rosters are trimmed.  (I believe they have to be finalized by tomorrow – down to 18.)  I see that Mary Frances Monroe was released by the Breakers …
