Phillies …. Phlyers … Phantastic Phriday!

Whoo hoo! Philadelphia was a happy town last night.  Phirst, over at Citizen’s Bank Park, the Phillies pulled out a close one against San Diego (and, in perhaps the best news of the evening, Brad Lidge shut ’em down 1-2-3 in the 9th)!  Then, at the Wachovia Center, the Phlyers evened the series and will head to Chicago for game 5 of the Stanley Cup Phinals on Sunday.

I note that the Phlyers are undefeated after game 4 of every play-off series this year … so let’s continue that streak on Sunday!  (Oh, and I am curious, Mo … who are you rooting phor???) 😉

Before moving on to subjects other than hockey, I’ve been remiss in not featuring one particular PhlyerJames van Riemsdyk (JVR for short) … who’s had a phabulous rookie season and who was drafted out of UNH by the Phlyers.  He just turned 21 on May 4, for Pete’s sake!  Here’s a nice article about JVR and his phamily … Alice, you’ll phind it interesting, too!

Having James in a Flyers uniform has altered the hockey allegiances of his family and many friends. The New York Rangers and Broadway are in their rear-view mirrors. Now, it’s Broad Street all the way.

Here’s a sure sign that the van Riemsdyk’s are on board with the orange and black. As our telephone conversation concluded, Frans said, “I’ll leave you with these parting words: Let’s Go Flyers!”

I would be remiss if I did not mark the passing, yesterday, of John Wooden at age 99.  The Wizard of Westwood was so thoroughly embedded in the basketball landscape as I was growing up … he just seemed a “given.”  While I was more frustrated by than admiring of his amazing win record back in the day (being a reflexive phan of the underdog and all) … his values and character were inspiring … as in this video where he discusses pursuing victory with honor …

And while we’re in a You Tube vein, check out the Lilith Fair channel … hope the tour does well this summer!  Here’s a sample – one of the videos on the channel – for Brandi Carlisle phans …

On the WPS front, the Red Stars face the Beat on Sunday in the televised game … a match-up that will feature LOTS of changes for both teams (the Red Stars having a new coach … and the Beat with a bunch of new players … including goalkeeper Hope Solo, defender Tina Ellertson, forward Eniola Aluko, plus midfielders Lori Chalupny and Carolyn Blank.

Here’s Kate the Great on the changes and the coming match!
