Tuesday Catch Up

I read through the post-match quotes re. yesterday’s USWNT win over Norway at the Algarve – and continue to just love Pia’s detailed and forthright comments … for example:

(On the ebb and flow of the match)  You can imagine that you have a team running at you the whole time and doing everything to win, but still we did not give up a goal. That is a very good thing with this team. We find a way to win. I think we created a running game, a transition game, and I would say we were a little bit naΓ―ve. We could have been a little more tactical and kept possession a little bit more, but we were eager to go forward when we didn’t have to. I think that is a lesson to learn. If you want to win a tournament, you have to know how to dictate the tempo, and I would say we didn’t do a good job of that today. Still, the defending, especially the back four, and Hope had another good game.”

Great (too) to see that Kacey White and Kendall Fletcher both got a full 90 in.  All 18 players on the roster have now had game time in Portugal.  Next up, Sweden (tomorow).  And Pia says … “Regardless of what you have done before the final, everyone has the feeling of loving to play in the final. I think all 18 are ready to go. The fact that we are playing Sweden makes it a little interesting. I will have my best friend sitting on the other bench (asst. coach Lilly Persson). It would be cool to win that game.”

On Sunday night, the Obama’s and a star-studded crowd celebrated Ted Kennedy’s 77th birthday at the Kennedy Center.  (Rush Limbaugh did not attend.)

Meanwhile, John McCain says he’s working with the President … ??? Unfortunately, the economy doesn’t appear to be one of the areas where he’s doing that.  In fact, he continues to be a proponent of the bizarre economic policies that the GOP seems wedded to – despite mountains of evidence indicating that the ideas DON’T WORK!  I don’t trust the McCain rhetoric, my friends.  This past election proved to me that he’s not the straight talker that so many in NH embraced nearly a decade ago.  Maybe he wasn’t then, either.  And the GOP infighting continues apace.  with Michael Steele and Rushie being just the tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile – the countdown to the start of the WPS season continues.  Get your Breakers’ season tickets here … πŸ˜‰

USWNT vs Sweden for the Crown at the Algarve

USWNT vs SwedenThe USWNT defeated Norway 1-0 on the strength of a goal by Megan Rapinoe and what sounded like at least one save-for-the-ages by Hope Solo.

Now Pia and crew face her homeland (gaaaa – I hate that word – can’t believe I used it) in the final.  Sweden held on to defeat Germany 3-2, coming on strong in the tournament after starting slow (with a 0-0 tie against China).

Pia looks happy … but I am guessing that the offense has her a little concerned.  The offense … and Lotta Schelin.

Is Lotta coming to the WPS?  I don’t think I’ve heard her name bandied about.

Hmmm … must do some research!

USWNT Update

The USWNT and Norway are underway over at the Algarve – scoreless in the early going.

The news of the moment is that Sweden defeated Germany 3-2 – so it’ll be the USWNT vs. Sweden in the final on Wednesday!

USWNT vs. Norway (11AM ET)

Check MatchTracker this morning at 11 ET to follow the USWNT vs. Norway in the final game of group play over at the Algarve (where, presumably, it is NOT snowing)!

The US is already in the championship game as a result of their two previous wins, however this should be interesting, as they’ve not seen Norway since their 2-0 Olympic loss back in August.  So there will be some extra energy attached to this match for the USWNT, I’m thinking.  (Check out the video of the “sit-down” with Hege Riise on this page, too!  She seems like a lovely person – I certainly enjoyed watching her in the WUSA, as well as during her international career.  Must be very nice for Pia to have an assistant who speaks her language!)

Also – kudos to Maryland and Vandy for winning their respective conference tournaments.  Guess the #1 seed picture just got a bit muddier (with Auburn’s defeat at the hands of Vanderbilt).  Oh, it’s going to be an interesting second-half-of March!

Twin Valley Flyers Rule!

Congratulations to the Twin Valley Flyers Peewee Hockey Team on winning the NH State Championship yesterday afternoon, defeating Back Bay in OT to take the trophy.  (And it was our own Mo, of March Madness fame, who tipped in the winning goal!)  Well done, Flyers – and thanks for an exciting weekend of great hockey at the Douglas N. Everett Arena(the “N” being for ??? – no luck finding out yet – but here’s a link with a photo of the 1932 olympic hockey team – Doug is 3rd from the right in the front row).

It’s snowing here and I am off to a slow start – no doubt due to Daylight Saving Time.  I’ll try to get back at this later … unless I end up napping!  πŸ˜‰

An Elephant Mired in It's Own Muck

That’s how Michael Steele has described the Republican Party. I agree that muck is a great way to describe a medium comprised of the detritus of right wing preachers, radio hacks, and turdblossoms.  But it doesn’t seem wise for a party that is struggling mightily to find its identity, should choose as its cheerleader-in-chief, someone who says such things, now does it?  As in so many decisions in recent months (Sarah?  Bobby?) the GOP is not only mired in muck but appears to be flailing wildly and impulsively.

But barring a mass revolt by members, which so far seems unlikely, Mr. Steele – who has never managed a large organization or won a race for public office on his own – has a two-year term in which to build a new operation, raise hundreds of millions of dollars and win enough races to reverse the Democratic tide.

About 70 staff members have already resigned or been fired, said Curt Anderson, a consultant Mr. Steele hired to assist him, while transition teams figure out how to restructure virtually every aspect of operations.

And as tempestuous as the past month has been, Mr. Steele said in the interview, Republicans should get ready for more. “I’m very spontaneous,” he said, comparing working with him to riding a roller coaster without knowing when the next dip or curve might come.

“Be prepared; you have no idea,” he said. “Just buckle up and get ready to go.”

Stay tuned – I have a feeling this is going to get weirder and weirder …

In the women’s basketball world I see that Maryland ousted UNC, while Nell Fortner’s Auburn squad did away with the Lady Vols.  I’m startiung to work on getting my brackets ready as we careen toward March Madness.  (Haven’t a clue about who to go for on the men’s side – so will likely fall back on my Philly teams … and fall out of the running rather quickly.)

Poor Buffalo!  The Bills have saddled themselves with TO … and controversy, no doubt.  Although ticket sales and (maybe) TV revenues will rise.  Interesting situation in which I imagine the owners and coaches are far from being on the same page – as TO spells profits, and guaranteed headaches.  (As I recall, the Bills didn’t even have a steady starting QB last season.  How long will TO be happy there?)

In soccer news, the Breakers beat up on the UConn soccer team yesterday- on the strength of goals by Lil and Brittany Cooper.  Next up?  The BC soccer team at noon on Wednesday.  Meanwhile Kelly Smith and Alex Scott continue to play in the Cyprus Cup – where England was sorey challenged by France yesterday and was apparently lucky to emerge with a 2-2 tie.

uhohOver at the Algarve Cup, here’s some info from SoccerScience about the NSCAA’s (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) third annual trip to the Algarve.  Check out the slide presentation about the event, here … and re. the photo to the left … yikes, how times have changed!

(And it ain’t even April I’m reacting to … it’s that guy with her.  Shite … speaking of being mired in muck …!

A Little on the Drug-Addled, Pasty, Russian Nesting Doll Guy that the GOP Adores … Then We Move On

Saturday morning … last morning before we go back to daylight savings time.  I’m having some smooth, dark coffee and catching up on the news of the world while the sun comes up here.

Scary times, as the economy’s woes seem to be accelerating with no end in sight.  Maddow had a great explanation of the dynamics last night.  Made sense to me (and made the GOP’s call for a governmental spending freeze seem absolutely and irresponsibly bizarre. Bizarre continues to be the operative word for the GOP, as they struggle to find any message that isn’t either just contrarian or hateful (as in the comments of a soft, pasty, drug-addled-yet-moralistic radio guy who gets way too much press and really DOES look like the outer shell of a Russian nesting doll).

On the Democratic side of the equation, we see that the DLC is undergoing some changes … good news to my mind.  I think they dragged the Dems off course as it was, contributing to changes that resulted in other changes that resulted in 8 years of Bush and Russian nesting dolls with radio shows.  (Okay, maybe that’s an overstatement – but some steps leftward for the DLC would be a lovely development.)

Maddow also had an excellent piece on the basic points being argued in the Proposition 8 Hearings out in California.  (Thanks for posting it, Boltgirl!)

Under the heading of “Science Rules” we have more Obama roll-backs of 13th-centuryish Bush policies – this time, the restrictions on stem cell research funding that had seriously hampered progress.  Applause and a sigh of relief.

On the other hand – what’s with continuing the Bushies line of defense for John Yoo?  You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.  Let the Bush House of Cards continue to come unraveled, Barack … you don’t need to do anything … just let it happen … and spend your administration’s energy elsewhere.  Plenty of other stuff to work on.

On the more uplifting end of the spectrum (much more uplifting) here’s a story about Mary Velan – an Upstate NY soccer player who, as a walk on for the NY/NJ Sky Blue is still in the mix for a roster spot.  Here’s to Oneonta State Women’s Soccer!  (Home of the Soccer Hall of Fame … remember?)

Oh … and then there’s Kobe and Marta … and some preview tidbits from Melissa on The Offside … and I’m outta here.
