8-7 Giants

I would like to see the Eagles move the ball well, before the half ends … no pressure to score … just get some yards.

Eagles 7 Giants 5

Almost another interception … but instead a penalty and a Giants first down.  We need another turnover … soon …

Time out Giants.  Rumor has it Alice is following this game.  Hi Alice!  😉

Eagles 7 Giants 3

Turnover turns into 7 for the birds.  It’s a long game – but so far so good.

DaddyCornblog's Rooting, Too!

DaddyCornblogThis is DaddyCornblog back in 1980, rooting for the Ron Jaworski, Dick Vermeil, Wilbert Montgomery version of the Eagles.  We’ve got the photo by the TV, where Daddy C patiently waits for the game to get underway.  He was disappointed in 1980, sadly.

He died on December 19, 1994 – the day after the Giants knocked the Eagles out of play-off contention.  The Cornblog family had always had a sore sport when it came to the Giants (as do most Eagles fans) … and 1994 really sealed the deal.  (Not that we blame the Giants exactly.  A lifetime of smoking probably had a wee bit to do with DaddyCornblog’s demise … but then, being a lifetime Eagles fan, and having to deal with the Giants annually, may have had something to do with the persistence of that unhealthy habit.  Hard to know.)

EaglesAt any rate, in true Cornblog fashion, while shoveling snow just now, I amassed a collection of odd facts and coincidences which, in my mind, assure an Eagles victory today.  For example:

  • When Bert Bell established his NFL franchise in Philadelphia in 1933, the country was struggling to recover from the Great Depression. New president Franklin D. Roosevelt had introduced his “New Deal” program through the National Recovery Administration, which had the Eagle as its symbol. Since Bell hoped his franchise also was headed for a new deal, he picked Eagles as the team name.  (Economic meltdown … new administration coming in … get it?)
  • In the run-up to the Superbowl in 1980 the Eagles beat the Vikings, and then the Cowboys.  (The Giants weren’t in it … as we surmise they won’t be today, either.)
  • There seems to be a fortuitous convergence between the Phillies and the Eagles.  In 1980 the Eagles started the year with a Superbowl appearance and the Phillies finished it off with a World Series win.  This time, we’re going by the fiscal year – which the Phillies have started with a World Series win – and the Eagles will finish off with Superbowl rings all around!)
  • We’ve got the Donovan McNabb, Andy Reid, Brian Westbrook version … a team that’s already been to the Superbowl once.  They know how to get there … and TO ain’t even in the picture.  How sweet to do it without him!
  • The Mannings have too many Superbowl wins for one family.
  • The bird teams have been winning this weekend.  No reason for that to stop!
  • I am wearing the same T-shirt, sweats and green corduroy shirt that I wore last week.
  • I am drinking only HollyCornblog home brew.

Anything else you can think of that needs to be done?  (Please let me know before 1PM …)

😉

They Might be Giants, but the Birds Have It – All of the Birds – All of the Time!

Fingers crossed here for another good NFL day for the bird teams.  The Ravens I had with a win.  But the Cardinals?  Wow.  I just hope they didn’t steal the Eagles’ mojo.  (Nah … an unworthy thought to be having this snowy NH Sunday.)  If Ravens can bring down Titans, certainly Eagles can bring down mere Giants!  Anyway, congrats to Boltgirl on that win, as Arizona continues their pundit-puzzling (and therefore extra-satisfying) run deeper into the play-offs!

Did I mention that it’s snowing?  Just glanced out the window and it’s coming down HARD.  Looks like the fluffy stuff, thankfully!  This morning I’m starting to think about how to manage my blog roll differently so that I can get all the WPS stuff more easily accessible.  As the season gets closer – and certainly once we’re in the thick of it – it’ll be nice to have everything all in one place so news is more accessible … along with the trash-talking.

Amanda Vandervort, in her blog Soccer Science, has posted a nifty overview of where the 7 WPS franchises stand, player-wise, heading into Friday’s draft.  Since we’re unabashedly Boston-centric here, I’ll share her list for the Breakers …

Boston Breakers
Angela Hucles (Virginia)*
Kristine Lilly (North Carolina)*
Heather Mitts (Florida)*
Kelly Smith (England/Seton Hall)^1
Fabiana (Brazil)^2
Maycon (Brazil)^3
Shinobu Ohno (Japan)^4
Emma Byrne (Ireland)^^
Christine Latham, (Canada)^^
Amy LePeilbet (Arizona St.)**1
Nancy Augustyniak Goffi (Clemson)**2
Sue Weber (Hofstra)**3
Kristin Luckenbill (Dartmouth)**4

Memory is such a fragile thing, eh?  I had totally forgotten about Kelly Smith.  The Breakers’ attack is looking particularly strong to me at the moment.  Especially if you factor in A-Rod as their likely #1 pick.  For all the latest on the WPS, you can check out their news page.  And don’t forget to sign up for The League Insider and get all the latest WPS news right to your In-box (minutes, hours, often freaking DAYS before you’ll see it here on JordanCornblog)!  😉

Phew – I just realized that my mind has been off the Eagles for a good 15 minutes or so.  It’s an odd feeling – disorienting, but a little restful/refreshing, too.  I pause, here, and say a small silent prayer for Donovan, before continuing with other Sunday tidbits!

Okay –  the ongoing wrangling about the bailout funds continues, as Congress tries to stop the Bushies from looting the Treasury and the taxpayers further before leaving office.  I am glad to see Congress putting the brakes on this latest instance of Bush Administration malfeasance – but the beyond-ironic outcome might be that it hampers efforts of the Obama Administration to hit the ground running.  Hopefully, they will work it out …

Many of the measure’s provisions are being coordinated with Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy F. Geithner, who is planning to expand the scope of the rescue program well beyond the financial system to help ordinary consumers and homeowners, as well small businesses and municipalities. Frank said in a news conference yesterday that his bill might not be needed if the Obama administration promised to abide by its principles.

“It doesn’t have to be enacted. It would be helpful if it was,” Frank said. “We have smart and cooperative people in this [incoming] administration, I’m willing to accept their word that they will act as if it were the law.”

I note, as we focus on the US Treasury and federal fiscal matters, that today is the birthday of Alexander Hamilton – who set up the national treasury, the national bank, the first budgetary and tax systems … imagine how distraught he must be at the havoc the Busies have wrought!

Finally, and quite randomly, here’s a small anecdote about Diogenes and Alexander the Great that I heard on Speaking of Faith yesterday, when I was driving between destinations.  Krista Tippett was interviewing author Jennifer Michael Hecht about the history of doubt.  It certainly gave me a moment’s pause:

Alexander the Great: “Diogenes, you are a man of great repute yet you are a man without purpose and mission! All you do is sit about all day, untroubled, unperturbed, indulging in conversation and the pleasures of moment to moment life!”

Diogenes: “So, what is so much better about the life of Alexander the Great?”

Alexander: I am a conquerer of nations!

Diogenes: So, conquerer of nations, unlike my purposeless life what are you going to do next?

Alexander: I am going to conquer Greece!

Diogenes: Yes . . then what?

Alexander: Then I am going to conquer Asia Minor!

Diogenes: Alright . . then what?

Alexander: THEN I am going to conquer the WORLD!

Diogenes: Alright, then what after that?

Alexander: THEN I will relax and enjoy life!

Diogenes: Why not save yourself the trouble and relax and enjoy life right now?

Pretty nifty, eh?  There’s much more to the Cynics than I had realized.  (And I shall e-mail this small anecdote to each and every Giants player … right after I sign off.)

Go Eagles!

Unbelievable Twist on that HollyCornblog Adage

Remember that now-famous retort by a young HollyCornblog to the saying, “What’s given is given”?

You don’t?

Okay – she stood up tall in her 4-year-old body and, as I remember it, shook her four-year-old-fist, and said, “What’s tooken back is tooken back.”

Come to find out that a Long Island Surgeon, Dr. Richard Batista, embroiled in a nasty and protracted divorce battle with his wife, has taken “tooken back” to a whole new level. He wants his wife to return the kidney he donated to her back in the day, before affairs and divorce courts, when  life was slow and oh so mellow

I don’t know – I kinda think what’s given is given, here.

And meanwhile, listen to the music and read this poem from this morning’s Writer’s Almanac.  (I’m thinking that Dr. and Mrs. Batista probably never cooked together … just a hunch.)

Recollection of Tranquility
by Idris Anderson

The first time we ever quarreled
you were cutting an onion
in the kitchen of our rented cottage.
I remember vividly. We were making creole
for a late night supper with champagne,
and you were taking it seemed forever
to cut the onion.
Each time your dull paring knife
chopped on the counter, I shifted my feet,
and I saw once in a glimpse over my shoulder
a white wedge of onion wobbling loose.
I sighed inaudibly. The butter I stirred
had already bubbled and browned.
I was starting over with a new yellow lump
that was slipping on the silver aluminum
when you brought, cupped in your hands,
the broken pieces, the edges all ragged,
the layers separated, bruised and oozing
cloudy white onion juice.
I complained:
the family recipe stated specifically,
the onion must be “finely chopped,”
for what I explained were very good reasons.
Otherwise, the pungent flavors would be trapped
irrevocably in the collapsed cellular structure
of the delicate root.

You sighed, I guess, inaudibly
and adjusted your glasses carefully
with two fingers (a fidget
I have since come to know
as a sign of mild perturbation)
and explained:
the pungence of onions too finely chopped
would be simmered away. The original sharp
burning crispness could be retained
only in fairly large, bite-sized chunks.
But you wouldn’t fight tradition.
I chopped onion on the counter
with the dull knife, while you set the table
and figured the best way of popping the cork.

Fine, Feathered Update

Done! The process is complete (see previous post) and the results were just delivered to my room for a viewing.

On leaving, our fabulous feather aficionado commented, “I feel like I have a lifetime’s worth of turkey feathers.”

Not many can make that statement, eh?
