A Letter to the President

Mr. Obama –

I know this will never actually reach you, but I’m going to say it anyway! It has been so long since we’ve had hope: in our politics, in our elected officials, in our nation, and in our future. We have entrusted our hope with you, please don’t let us down! The road will be long and difficult, and you will slip along the way. But no matter how difficult the journey, you must keep our hope alive — we can’t afford to go back down the cynical, bitter, and divisive path we have been on. Good luck on your journey!

Wednesday Morning – It Wasn't Just a Dream!

POTUSGood news still abounds!

While we were sleeping, Obama smashed McCain in Nevada, and won Indiana for the Dems – first time since Lyndon Johnson in 1964!  The turnout was the highest in US electoral history, with more than 130 million people voting!  Things are still being decided in North Carolina, Montana, and Missouri … and in Georgia – an early prize in the McCain column, it’s looking like some of the early votes have not yet been counted, so hold on!  Maybe Saxby Chambliss doesn’t get to celebrate just yet.  Keep an eye on FiveThirtyEight.com today … as news continues to come in!

When is the last time that people around the world celebrated anything having to do with America?

When is the last time you wept while listening to a presidential acceptance speech?

Here’s a great quote I found as a comment on a You Tube video of Obama …

“Come to the edge, he said. They said: We are afraid. Come to the edge, he said. They came. He pushed them,

And they flew…”

– Guillaume Apollinaire

Dixville Notch and Hart's Location Go Obama

Yep – after voting Republican in the past 4 elections, Dixville Notch went blue!  Hart’s Location did, too.  The tally stands at 32 (Obama) to 16 (McCain) by my calculation.  Dixville Notch started its early voting tradition in 1960 and has only gone for a Democrat once before – in 1968.  (Let’s hope it’s a bellwether this time!)

As you settle in this evening to keep track of the results, here’s a helpful map with poll closing times.  My gut tells me it’s not gonna be a long night – but you never know.

Judging from the turnout at the candidates’ final rallies, it could be a real rout.  There is nothing I would like better than to see the policies of the past 8 years, as well as the negative, destructive campaign run by McPalin roundly repudiated by the voting public!

Finally, and sadly, Obama’s grandmother Madelyn Dunham died on Sunday night … not quite making it to her grandson’s moment of triumph!  I hope her spirit is relishing it and watching over her grandson, still.

Gotta go vote!  Onward!

Palin – "Sarkozy" Prank Call

If you need some relief from moment-to-moment reporting of the electoral votes November 4th, you can check out the prank call to Sarah Palin, who believed she was speaking to French president Nicholas Sarkozy.

I must admit I couldn’t listen to the whole thing… I was too embarrassed for her! But given the shameless mudslinging she’s engaged in, I think she had it coming to her.

Prankster Marc Antoine Audette of CKOI, Montréal… thanks. And here’s hoping that news about Sarah quickly becomes, and remains, irrelevant!

Down to the Wire

It’s all about the ground game now.  To my mind, that’s gotta give Obama another leg up as the final hours tick away.  For actual data, as well as some good anecdotal reportage, check out FiveThirtyEight.com – a new addition to the links here.

Wish I’d found it sooner.  The polling data is in-depth – and the blogging is very interesting!  (Check out “The Big Empty” about McCain forces on the ground.)  Here is some analysis of this morning’s polling data from FiveThirtyEight!

As far as the ground game here in Concord is concerned, things are buzzing on the Obama front.  This weekend we delivered bag lunches, apple crisp, and cases of water to the home base of the volunteer effort here – and the place was extremely busy – with cars pulling in and out of the parking area constantly – all loaded with canvassers.

Here’s a sortable table from The Wall Street Journal showing the travels of the Candidates and their running mates and spouses – where they went and how often.  (Thanks for the tip, Gary.)

Not to be complacent (goodness knows, 2000 taught us to never do that) I continue to feel like Obama is going to be to McCain as the Phillies were to the Rays (but without the rain delay … in this venue I guess they’d be hanging chads … please god).

If by some slim chance you are reading this blog and are still undecided, check out “The Choice 2008” – a production of Frontline that offers comprehensive information about the candidates and the choices they present.

It takes awhile to load – but is well worth the wait!

Margaret and Helen is another great find that I wish I’d stumbled upon earlier in the game.  (Thanks, Princess Sparkle Pony, for giving these two great friends a shout out!)

On a lighter note – here’s a wonderful clip featuring Jimmy and Sarah.  (Thanks, Al!)

Who knew – she played Annie in Concord, NH at age 11!  And she’s from Bedford, NH.  Cool stuff!

While we’re on Jimmy – here’s Barack from a June ’08 show.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuugciKjhPY

… and more – Barack dancing with Ellen …

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsWpvkLCvu4

… and then discussing balancing family with campaigning with her … Al – you got me on a roll!

Finally, as Margaret and Helen would say .. GO VOTE!

USWNT Wins in Virginia … Obama Will be Next!

Having been asleep at the switch on the soccer front for awhile, I was pleased to receive a Google Alert about the USWNT’s most recent win.  This one coming in Richmond, VA, where South Korea fell to the USWNT.  Vic Dorr, Jr. describes the game in the Times Dispatch.  Sounds like Angela Hucles continues her run of starring turns for the USWNT, with another goal in the 3-1 effort.

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, who used 16 of her 17 available players, said she was pleased with her club’s effort particularly since the Americans hadn’t played since a Sept. 20 exhibition victory over Ireland and had practiced only once in preparation for yesterday’s match.

“The big thing was, we wanted to have fun,” Sundhage said. “Of course, you can never expect to have fun unless you give your very best.”

The Achieve Your Gold Tour continues, with matches against South Korea in Cincinnati and Tampa, and then closes out the year with a match against China in Detroit on December 17th!  Oh, and you gotta check out the WNT Blog … some great Halloween pictures and updates there!

Funny to come upon this USWNT news first thing, as I had a dream with Pia in it last night.  She was visiting at the house (as she so often does) and there were some other (nameless but clearly knowledgeable) soccer coaches visiting.  Everyone was deciding what beer to drink, before settling in to watch some video of a recent soccer match.  I was about to ask Pia what ever happened with the team’s visit to the White House … when I woke up.  (And speaking of that visit – my guess is that the economy’s meltdown trumped the team’s visit – haven’t seen a danged thing about it in the paper.  I’m glad that what would likely have been an awkward moment for many, appears to have been dodged.)  Anyone out there know differently?

So now, on to the political news, as we count down to Election Day … Continue reading

Now it's November

Another Halloween has gone by with no trick or treaters on this hill (and now we have a hefty basket of chocolate to work our way through).  It’s November and we’re at four days and counting.  As the sun rises, for the last time in Daylight Saving mode, let’s see what’s going on out there in the big, wide world.

On the campaign trail, we’re greeted by desperation on the Republican front.  John Boehner stooped to calling Barack Obama “chickenshit” in Ohio.  Since we’re talking fecal matter, let me just say that Boehner’s bull didn’t seem to go over with the (mostly Republican) students he was addressing.

“To hear this man call this man a chicken shit in front of an audience was absolutely appalling,” Heins said. “I couldn’t believe it, this man’s supposed to be a respected politician who’s supposed to have a positive public image … It angered me that he would go that low in order to promote his own candidate.”

Guess you should keep the sh-t in the john next time, John!

While we’re in disgusting mode … this made me so mad I almost ralphed!  I’m sorry, Ralph, but your candidacy did help screw things up eight years ago.  We are where we are today, in part, because you helped Bush win NH – or helped Gore lose it (as you like to say).  Either way you look at it, Ralph, your persistence in running again, at 74, is not about anything other than Ralph Nadar’s ego.  Deal with your mortality in some other way, Ralph.  You were wonderful … but you’ve lost my admiration, as you insist on self-righteously taking votes away from Democrats when they might have a chance of winning!

Enough on that … can you tell the self-righteous purity gets to me?  I’ll need to go for a run or something, to shake this off.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have Saxby Chambliss fomenting racism in an effort to get “his voters” to the polls.  Yes, in Georgia, Chambliss faces a tough challenge from Jim Martin whose victory, which isn’t such a long shot, could contribute to a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate for the Democrats!  Chambliss was the guy who ran the really nasty campaign against Max Cleland six years ago.  We wouldn’t be sad to see his career end … especially as his appeals are to the worst in his constituency.  “The other folks are voting,” he bluntly tells supporters. Nice, Saxby, and “Buh bye!”

As the chances of McCain/Palin are palin’ it appears that Palin herself may not go away.  Good news for Tina Fey … bad news for most of the rest of us.  While her unvetted, meteoric appearance on the political stage has been a disaster, there’s no denying her ambition and craftiness. That she may represent the next star of the Republican Party is testimony to the weirdly rabid emptiness that the GOP continues to exhibit.  The right has a stranglehold on ’em, it would appear.  No room for moderates under the big tent.  Hey, it’s okay – come on over – we’ll give you a seat!

Before moving on – I must also mention a bit of soccer news!  The short list for FIFA’s World Player of the Year has been announced.  Interestingly, on the women’s side, eight of the ten players named are WPS draftees.  Nice – but let’s get those other two on the rolls, okay?  Hope Solo didn’t surprise me .. but I must admit that Shannon Boxx did, just a little bit.  Not that I mind, mind you – just a little surprised.

In other soccer news, here are the seedings for the NESCAC women’s championship (sorry, Bobcats).  On the men’s side, the Bobcats travel to Williams for a noontime match-up tomorrow.  (Will we be going?  Hmmm.)

Oh, and the Phillies?  They won the World Series – had you heard?

😉
