Will Hornbuckle Buckle Down and Do it?

Alexis Hornbuckle may hold the key for Pat Summitt’s Lady Vols as they tangle with Van Chancellor’s LSU Lady Tigers tomorrow night.

Alexis HornbuckleOf all the outdoor activities that Pat Summitt planned on her deck this year, swatting a raccoon was not one of them. Last month, she stepped in, set a screen for her Labrador retriever, smacked the raccoon and dislocated her shoulder, an injury that has become as contagious among the Tennessee Lady Vols as the measles.

While reaching in to steal a ball Tuesday night, forward Candace Parker also dislocated a shoulder, not once but twice. She returned and played valiantly as Tennessee (34-2) defeated Texas A&M, 53-45, to reach the Final Four.

Parker, the consensus top player in the country, has been cleared to play Sunday against Louisiana State in the national semifinals in Tampa, Fla. But she will undoubtedly experience some discomfort and restricted motion while wearing a protective sleeve on her left shoulder. More than ever, Summitt said, the Lady Vols will probably have to rely on the resourcefulness of guard Alexis Hornbuckle to retain their national title. Click the link above, to read on …

Little Bit

Another Jere Longman article, this from a year ago, about the Lady Vol known as “Little Bit.” Had she gone to Rutgers, well, that would be another story! Click the link to read on …

CLEVELAND, April 2 — If Epiphanny Prince’s recruiting pitch had been more persuasive, she and Shannon Bobbitt might both be playing in the Rutgers backcourt Tuesday night in the women’s national championship game.

The USWNT Wins, the Men's Final Four Starts, and Philadelphia is Happy!

The USWNT defeated Jamaica 6-0, helped along the way by Abby Wambach’s 2-goal, 1-assist performance.  (As an aside, Wambach’s career total for goals is now 91 in 113 games … quite a pace!)

This win means that the US will play Mexico in the sem-finals (in front of an already-sold out crowd of 22,000).  According to US Soccer, Mexico is ahead in goal differential at the moment (having defeated Jamaica 8-1).  This means that a tie won’t help the US; they need a win on Sunday, and will be playing in front of a hugely partisan home crown in Cuidad Juarez!  Kick-off for Sunday’s game is 1:30 PM MT.  The action will, again, be available on MatchTracker.

In other soccer news, the Boston Breakers have announced that Harvard Stadium will be their home venue, starting in April of 2009.  While I loved BU’s Nickerson Field … the parking availability and tailgating possbilities make Harvard a great shift IMHO.

One of our peripatetic, Canterbury basketball fans is heading off to Tampa for the Women’s Final Four as I write.  The other leaves tomorrow.  Meanwhile … starting a little after 6PM ET, the four #1 Men’s seeds hit the court to see who’ll get to Monday’s Final.  Personally, my money’s on … flipping a coin!

Finally, the 76ers are in the playoffs, the Flyers are in the playoffs, and the Phillies are at 500 MUCH earlier than last year!  It’s a good morning to be a Philadelphia fan!

Pia and Her Crew in Mexico

They’re underway in Mexico … and MatchTracker is up and running on the US Soccer site (for what it’s worth) … but I, sadly, must go to bed. Look for a report bright and early tomorrow, though! (At 9 minutes, the USWNT has had two shots – one on goal!)

Friday Tidbits

First off, this header for a story on MSNBC caught my eye … “Clinton Veers to Dark Side” … it says.  “Uh oh,” I thought, “something nefarious here!”  Turns out it’s a story about how, in her stump speeches, she uses real-life stories to illustrate her points.  Real life, I guess, is “The Dark Side.”  I have to say, the header struck me as just a tad misleading … just a tad biased.  Had I not read the story, I’d have thought this was about Hillary being nasty to Obama (or someone) again! Come on, folks!  The dark side … isn’t that Dick Cheney’s territory?

Oh Father, Where Art Thou?I read on Politico that Oliver Stone has a Dubya biopic in the works.  Don’t know if I could stand to watch.  Sounds like it’s the tale of an Oedipal misadventure that, unfortunately, didn’t take place in Shakespeare’s brain … but rather cost trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives … not to mention Yale’s reputation!

The Phillies won

Tennessee’s Candace Parker has been cleared to play in the Final Four.  Meanwhile, 40 years after Martin Luther King’s assassination, Memphis is coming together around it’s basketball team.

The first day of CONCACAF saw:

  • Group B=Canada over Trinidad & Tobago, 6-0
  • Group A=Mexico over Jamaica, 8-1

If Mexico beat Jamaica 8-1, it’s a little scary to think about today’s finals score.  (Kick-off is at 7:30 PM PT, I believe.)  Apparently TVC Deportes is carrying the game … but I haven’t heard of anyone who’s actually found the station.  I’ll keep you posted!  Meanwhile, while you wait, here’s a Q&A with Heather O’Reilly from US Soccer.

PS:  It’s SNOWING this morning in Canterbury, NH!!!!  Snowing HARD!

USWNT Starts Olympic Quest

CONCACAF qualifying begins on Friday, 4/4/08 for the US Women’s National Soccer Team. They meet Jamaica in their first game, and hope to continue the creative play and winning ways they’re learning under Coach Pia Sundhage. Check out Kelly Whitehill’s article in USA Today for more about this team and its exciting new direction!

If It's Thursday, This Must Be … Uh … Thursday

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008.  Hmmmm.  What’s been happening in the world?  American Idol, I read, is down to their Elite Eight … or is that Dancing With the Stars?  One of ’em, anyway.  Baseball is underway … and the Red Sox won yesterday, while the Phillies are off to an 0-2 start.  (Nothing to worry about there – the Phils always do this at the start of the season!)

On a far more serious note, I noticed a story on MSNBC this morning indicating that the two young men indicted in the tragic murder of Eve Carson, the UNC student body president, were apparently both cases that were seriously mishandled by the department of probaton/parole.

This is tragic any way you look at it … but I fear that, as is the MO of our bureaucracies these days, the individuals lowest on the food chain will take the hit.  As with Abu Ghraib, no one’s taking a look at those higher up … and at the organizational culture that they created/fostered.  And no one is looking at the larger picture – at the budgeting and fiscal priorities that leave front line workers with impossible demands and accountabilities … and ever-dwindling resources to address them.

What happened here is happening in systems in every state in this country … not just in probation/parole, but also in education, in health and mental health care … you name it!  We need leadership that is willing to look at the complex issues involved – not just self-righteously and disingenuously decry what has happened, hang some underling out to dry, and then move on.

This sucks.  It’s an individual tragedy of incalculable pain and loss … and it is a systemic tragedy that gets obscured by the particulars over and over again.

Finally, on a more positive note, here is a wonderfully thoughtful piece by Alice Walker about why she supports Obama.  It is most definitely worth a read!

Wow, Gutsy Play on a Gusty Night!

The wild winds of April (at least that’s how it was last night in these parts) nearly blew in a couple more #2 seeds … but in the end the #1’s prevailed on a nerve-wracking night of hard-nosed basketball.

What a gutsy performance by Candace Parker (as well as Jenny Moshak and the Lady Vol’s athletic training staff)!  The rest of the team did a great job of keeping it close ’til Candace could get back in … and Alexis Hornbuckle hit a clutch three-pointer to close the door on Texas.  So Tennessee moves on to meet LSU on Saturday in Tampa.  (Hopefully with a healthy Parker to go up against Sylvia Fowles in the paint!)

Aside from being a quality professional, Jenny Moshak sounds like a really quality person, judging from this piece about championing diversity and fighting homophobia … and other phobias … in her everyday work at Tennessee.  Too, here’s a great piece about Moshak’s work with Parker when Candace first got to Tennessee … when the super freshman ended up missing her entire first season.  Sounds like it’s been quite an odyssey!  (All you Foothills Physical Therapy folks will find this especially interesting!)

In the late game Rutgers sprinted to an early … and LARGE … lead (they were up by as many as 14 points … and Coach Geno Auriemma was looking worried).  The Scarlet Knights were uncharacteristically aggressive on offense, and pretty much shut down freshman phenom Maya Moore in the first half.  Connecticut made a run at the end of the half … and continued that trajectory into the second frame.  Maya Moore hit a clutch three-pointer from the top of the key that put UConn ahead for good, and ultimately they pulled out the win in a nail-biter that left fans definitely frazzled!  The Huskies will face Candice Wiggins and her Stanford compatriots on Saturday night in Tampa, having made it to the Final Four for the first time (I believe) since Diana Taurasi graduated!  (Please let me know if I’m wrong on that, folks!)  Geno seemed positively verklempft at the end of the game!

Here in JordanCornblog land, we’re now all set for the Final Four on both the men’s and the women’s sides … and can get some sleep before Saturday rolls around and it all starts up again!  In the women’s bracket, Morgan/Murray is back in the lead, and Brigitte is close behind, followed by Jordy, Don, and Rachel.  Sadly, as you’ll see on the “March Madness” page, more folks have lost their National Champion picks (sorry, all you Rutgers fans).  How this’ll play out is anyone’s guess … but here’s how it stands this morning … [TABLE=31]

Yo, Mo, Where'd You Go?

Well, well, well!  The #2 seeds pulled it out last night, with LSU’s gritty defense and Sylvia Fowles’ inside play sending UNC home.  Then, in an all-offense-all-the-time type game, the Stanford Cardinals sent Maryland packing.  That game featured an awesome performance by Kristi Toliver … and an even better one by Candice Wiggins, who posted her second over-forty game of the tournament!

LSU held the Tarheels to an amazing 50 points … that’s UNC’s scoring for the entire game, folks!  Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Stanford had 51 points in just the first half!  LSU goes to their 5th straight Final Four – a record that they now share with UConn.  (No women’s team has ever, yet, made it to 6 in a row!)  Meanwhile, I was surprised to discover that this is Van Chancellor’s very first Final Four.  I’m glad he’s added this milestone to the things he’s accomplished in his illustrious coaching career.  (Gotta wonder, too, if Pokey Chatman was watching and rooting for the Tigers … presumably from someplace in Russia.)

So, as we begin a new month, how’s it going in JordanCornblog Bracketland?  Well, Don has jumped into first place on the strength of his LSU and Stanford picks.  Morgan/Murray got LSU, but had the Terrapins winning the late game … so they’ve slipped just a bit.  Meanwhile, Jordy, Brigitte and Jeff also had the Stanford/LSU combo and gained some ground.  Many others in the pool had either LSU or Stanford.  We’ll see how things shake out tonight … but for now, here are the standings … [TABLE=30]

Finally, I hear that Pia has chosen her squad for CONCACAF qualifying (which starts on April 4th)!  She can take a 20-person roster, and can suit up 18 players for any given game.  Noteworthy (after a quick look) is the absence of Briana Scurry … gotta wonder.

Phew!

When I went to bed Notre Dame was ahead of Tennessee, and moving on to play for the Final Four was looking anything but inevitable for the Lady Vols.  Candace Parker’s 34 points, however, helped bring Tennessee back from a halftime deficit to a 74-64 win over the Irish.  (Did I already say Phew?)  With Rutgers, UConn, and Texas A&M prevailing, this leaves the women with an Elite Eight comprised entirely of #1’s and #2’s, as the games continue tonight and tomorrow.

Hey, Paula LR … now that you see what you’ll be dealing with in Tampa, are you still sure you want to go?  And hey, Alice … hope Paris was good.  Time to get back down to business, though … and we’ll be expecting some French verse before we’re all done.

And Morgan/Murray … can you hold your lead in the Women’s bracket while Morgan continues his climb on the Men’s side?

Oh yeah, and Chris/Dewd/Cynthia/Jane/Don/Rachel … are you going to let that happen?

In JordanCornblog Land, here’s how the standings shake out …[TABLE=29]
