Morgan/Murray Sprint Ahead

With the Texas win over Duke on the women’s side, Morgan/Murray move into sole possession of first place in the women’s standings.  One game to go tonight … and four more over the next two days … but here are the standings at the moment … [TABLE=28]

All the #1's Are In!

All of the #1 seeds in the men’s tourney are in the final four for the first time ever!  The route was heartbreaking for Davidson … and their fans here in Canterbury.  What a game!  Now we’re watching a close Duke-Texas A&M game.  Here are the standings on the men’s side as of tonight.  Stay tuned … the men play again on Saturday, April 5th! No Surprises, But …

As I settle down to write, I am just now interrupted by the sight of three deer running FAST down our hill, along the edge or the field.  I wondered why they were moving like that … and my question was quickly answered when a very, very big coydog went racing down the hill after them.  The coydog was far enough behind that no damage was done … but I am glad that our dogs are inside and oblivious to the drama out there.  Let’s move indoors, where hoops news is a little more predictable this morning than life out in the wilds of Canterbury!

The seedings held true yesterday, although Louisville gave UNC a good scare on the men’s and the women’s sides … (And if you find yourself with time on your hands between games today, here’s a nice article about Tyler and Ben Hansbrough, two b-ball phenoms out of Poplar Bluff, Mo!  You’re sure to be seeing more of Tyler, as UNC moves on to take on either Kansas or Davidson in the Final Four on April 5th.)  Meanwhile, LaToya Pringle led the UNC women back from the brink; her 27 points helping them overcome an 18-point deficit.  The Louisville women must be kicking themselves for letting that game get away.  They got into serious foul trouble and ended up losing by 4 points.

In other action, the Musketeers went cold and the UCLA men looked stronger as they rolled past Xavier (with Kevin Love continuing to dominate and Darren Collison returning to form after an uncharacteristic game against Western Kentucky).  The Maryland women moved on with a handy win over Vandy, while Stanford knocked off Pitt (after Pitt nearly knocked off Candice Wiggins) and LSU rolled past Oklahoma State led by a fiery Erica White!  This sets up an LSU-UNC showdown in New Orleans, and a Maryland-Stanford match-up in Spokane.  I like the chances of the #2’s in both of these Monday games (although judging from my track record, you may want to just ignore that)!

In JordanCornblog Bracket Land, we’ve seen some interesting changes.  While the leaders remain the same in both brackets (Chris and Jane for the Men and Women respectively),  Morgan/Murray are now TIED with Jane for the lead … and Don and Rachel have made a run and are nipping at the leaders on the women’s side … with Chris, Jeff, Brigitte and Mike not far behind!  On the men’s side Dewd remains a close second.  Leading the rest of the pack is the entire Howe-Dewdney family, led by Cynthia and Morgan, and followed by Murray, and then Tyler.

Patti and Doris continue to do their part … keeping anyone from falling out of the bottom of either bracket!  😉

Here are the actual standings as of today.  Expect lots more shifting as the Sunday games tick by! [TABLE=24]

Soccer Interlude

Here’s a nice article about USWNT coach Pia Sundhage from the NY Times and another from ESPN Soccernet.  The USWNT hits the field again for CONCACAF qualifying against Jamaica on April 4 and Mexico on April 6.  (Both games are in Mexico … and neither is being televised, as far as I know.)

Nova Not Super

Ah, too bad.  Kansas looked like a strong prairie storm flattening a field of corn, as the Jayhawks cut down 12th seed Villanova last night.  (Okay, that was over the top … Hemingway I’m not!)  The miracle upset that JordanCornblog expected Augustinian-founded Villanova to deliver was on the other side of the bracket, where those upstart Presbyterians from Davidson overturned Wisconsin to dance on.  So given that it was Presbyterians … maybe it was predestinaton rather than a miracle.  Ya gotta wonder!  (In JordanCornblog’s defense, let it be noted that both Davidson’s and Villanova’s school mascot/nickname is WILDCATS.  Clearly, we were on the right track … but went for the wrong Wildcat.)

In other Friday night action, Texas sent Stanford packing … in no uncertain terms.  Finally, in the late game, Memphis rolled past Michigan State, joining the Elite Eight for the third straight year.  Derrick Rose and his fellow Tigers proved the nay-sayers wrong yet again … while at the same time depriving Patti of one of her last hopes for some hoops points!

So how do things stand in our pool?  Chris and Dewd remain ahead, with Brigitte and Mike dogging them hard.  Alice has fallen off quite a bit since she fled to Paris … while Morgan continues to be strong and steady.  He’s tied with Cynthia and has moved ahead of Murray again.  Meanwhile Rachel, Holly, and a surging Tyler are right in the mix, too!

… and JordanCornblog is doing poorly enough that she is getting tired of showing these damn standings … that’s for sure![TABLE=22]

Who'd a Thunk …

First off, Davidson over Wisconsin?  Even Murray didn’t see that coming?  Stephen Curry … WOW!  And what about tomorrow’s UNC-Louisville rivalry?  The women play each other at noon, and the men play tomorrow night.  What are the odds of THAT happening?

Meanwhile Kansas and Villanova are underway.

Speaking of Villanova … ever heard of Shelly Pennefather?  She was one of the best players in the Big East, making their Silver Anniversary Team in 2004.  She was National Player of the year in 1987 … and in 1991 she had “heeded her calling” and become a cloistered nun in a contemplative order, the Poor Clares.  Interesting stuff … who’d a thunk!

Meanwhile … it’s not looking good for the Wildcats.  We shall see …

I do not trust men from the plains …

So begins  the Kansas Jayhawk portion of a great piece titled Ernest Hemingway Blogs About the Top Teams in College Basketball by John Frank Weaver in McSweeney’s Internet Tendency … a subset of McSweeney’s.  I’d write more … but must go watch some of that aforementioned b-ball!  (Kansas-Villanova gets underway at 9:40 … guess I’ll catch that score in the morning!)

Old Rocky Top Stop … and a Prediction!

Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinels ousted the #2 seed (Tennessee) last night and now head to the Eastern Regional.  They advance to play #1 seed UNC tomorrow.  They have also, unfortunately, eliminated BJ’s pick to win it all (oops)!  UNC rolled on with an easy win over Washington State … and a sweet 16 points from Tyler Hansbrough in the second half!

Over in the West the games were quite a bit closer.  Kevin Love scored a career high 29 points in helping UCLA beat a feisty Western Kentucky squad.  The Bruins hung on to win by 10, after nearly squandering a 21-point halftime lead!  (UCLA seems bent on making it look difficult this year.)  Finally, in the OT game last night, Xavier made it through on B.J. Raymond’s late three’s after being down by 6 in overtime.  West Virginia goes home after a great run (including their upset over #2 Duke), while the Musketeers move on for a chance at their first-ever final four berth!

JordanCornblog boldly (some might say rashly) predicts that tonight Villanova will become the first #12 seed in NCAA Tournament history (at least on the men’s side) to topple a #1.  Mark my words … 😉

Finally – the standings have shifted just a bit amongst our JordanCornblog crew.  Chris remains on top of the pack, but Dewd has made a huge leap (both of them got all four teams right in last night’s games).  Meanwhile, Morgan seems to be gaining ground, having caught up with Cynthia … and now nipping at Murray’s heels.  Tyler, you need another San Diego!  Meanwhile, BJ joins Don, Doris, and Patti as one of the sad souls who’ve lost their National Champion pick (and a potential 32 points).  Too bad, guys!  ;)[TABLE=21]

Captain Rampone

Here’s an article by Karyn Lush about Christie Rampone and how she’s growing into the USWNT Captaincy … and how she, as well as her dynamics with the team, have been affected by the presence of one Ms. Rylie Rampone.

Can you tell it’s halftime in the early Thursday night men’s games?  Right now UNC is leading Washington State 35-21 and Xavier leads West Virginia 32-25.  Meanwhile, the USWNT heads off soon for CONCACAF qualifying, which starts April 2 (nothing’s being televised, unfortunately).

Meanwhile … I love this blog post by Mike Ehrlich about the UNC women’s b-ball team, kicking back.  Almost makes me want to root for ’em.  Almost.
