Wow

RPE heads off to Dublin today – another adventure!

And me?  I think I may be more or less on vacation from JordanCornblog (in case you hadn’t noticed).

Perhaps if I allowed myself to write about SP … but no … I’ll avoid that temptation and seek inspiration elsewhere.

And, in the meantime, have a wonderful summer … and I’m sure I’ll pop up here from time to time.

😉

Personally, I think I prefer the Anita Baker version … what do you think?

How Sad … and Then How Sick!

Just read this morning about Lindsay Tarpley’s ACL tear … ugh!

It was so good to see her back in the mix … what a raw deal.  Best wishes to you, Lindsay!

And in other news, I love this HuffPo headline – “OMG IMF” – about the utter despicableness that appears to lie in the dark heart of Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

It sounds like “the great seducer” may have met his match.

Woot!

The Conspirators

Mary Surratt; from http://members.aol.com/RVSN...

Image via Wikipedia

Went to see “The Conspirator” last night at Red River Theatres … excellent, disturbing movie that pretty much could be taken as a mirror of our times – with fewer electronic gadgets, a happy lack of talking heads, and different outfits.

It tells the story of the one woman, Mary Surratt, who was tried as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.  And a very familiar-sounding scenario it is, with military tribunals being the venue of choice for the “trials” and revenge trumping civil rights and justice at most every turn.  (Oh, and those who advocate for justice are accused of being traitorous.)

It all sounds so blastedly familiar, doesn’t it?  And yet I’d have to say that I view the actions of Stanton et al with a different eye than I do the execrable acts of the Cheney administration recently subjected us to.  Back in 1865 the country had just barely survived a bloody and protracted Civil War … a controversial President had been killed … and Washington, DC was a city very vulnerably located in the midst of the territory belonging to the “other side” up until days before the assassination.

But in both cases, the fact remains that justice was not served and, unlike the dead President who wish to appeal to the “better angels of our natures” the men in charge took the opportunity to play on people’s fears and prejudices, exacting revenge and feeding into the basest impulses of the populace.  The President who was killed would not have behaved as those who remained did, I am confident.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Perhaps I am naive … but it’s my belief that the trial and outcome would have been quite different, had the individual who had the depth and breadth of vision to pen those words still been in charge of things.

I Don’t Get It – I Really, Really Don’t

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four term...

Image via Wikipedia

So yes, I absolutely don’t get it. I’m reading this morning that health insurers are making record-breaking profits. Oil companies are doing the same. The GOP doesn’t want to rein in anything on that front, but wants to cut so-called “entitlement” programs that ordinary sentence might actually benefit from.

I mean the kinds of programs that keep people from going hungry – not the kinds of “entitlement” programs that allow corporate bigwigs to buy Porsches and send their kids to posh private schools.

They play cynically, these core GOP movers and shakers, on the visceral fear that so many have of “big government.” It reminds me of how my grandmother used to speak of Franklin Delano Roosevelt – as if he were the devil incarnate. That was how I was raised – although, given my experience of my mother, I also learned to mistrust those shrill, over-the-top, opinions.

For the first time in nearly a decade we have a president who has a brain and is managing some of the worst crises our country has faced in a long, long time – most of which have been building for a generation or so. And what do we do? We get all caught up in wondering whether he’s actually an American or not.

And those core GOP movers and shakers? They play on those fears, too. The fear of “the other” is being exploited to keep folks like those wealthy health insurers and those wealthy oil company execs in their glorious places.

And the people with those fears – scared to death of losing what they have – are being used and abused by people who have absolutely no interest in them. It sucks. It’s crazy. I feel like we haven’t learned anything and are sliding back toward the kind of divisiveness that spawned the Civil War.

Cognitive dissonance doesn’t stop the GOP movers and shakers from saying the most absurd things in the world, contradicting themselves, denying it, contradicting again, and so on. Is no one paying any attention?

I don’t get it – I really, really don’t.

No wonder I am kinda craving hoppy beers these days. Beer and baseball – now that I can wrap my head around!

Beer, Breakers, Bejeweled Blitz, and Boltgirl

… not necessarily in that order.  But since you asked, and since I am so far out of the soccer loop as to begin to feel embarrassed to even use the word, I commend you to Boltgirl for the real updates.  I can tell you when the games will be played and where (like Breakers at Western NY tonight) but beyond that am of little use, I’m afraid.

NOW, as for beer … well … I am hoppy to share my opinion(s) on that front … and will likely consult HollyCornblog or The Beer Advocate should I actually need to sound like I have any information to back up my biases.

Finally, I am on the verge of deleting Bejeweled Blitz from my Facebook account as it has come close to ruining my week.  A warning to any/all with addictive and/or obsessive-compulsive tendencies … or a proclivity for procrastination … STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME.

There … now, if I could just break the 100,000 point level ONCE before I shut ‘er down … 😉

Upcoming Events and Other Miscellany

And happy Thursday to you!

Keep your eye out, this Saturday evening, for the USWNT versus Japan on the Fox Soccer Channel. That’s at 6:30 PM Eastern time. Looks like we’ve got for Breakers on the team, at least at this juncture. I’ve got to start paying better attention to soccer, with the Women’s World Cup fast approaching.

Meanwhile, I was totally psyched when the Phillies came back against the Marlins last night to win the game in the ninth! To bed Cliff Lee didn’t get the win – they’re not giving him the run support that he could use – kinda like what happened with Cole Hamels last year. The Phillies are off tonight, which means I am likely to be going to bed early unless I get on a roll with my writing work (not this blog … as you have no doubt guessed).

So what else is happening? If I’m able to tear myself away from the computer, I’m hoping to get some things planted this weekend, and maybe take a turn at mowing the grass – ChristopherCornogblog having mostly taken over that chore the past couple of years. Gotta pay some bills, too – watch the USWNT play some stellar soccer – and maybe sample a hoppy beer or two!

I’m sure there’s something else that slipping my mind at the moment.Maybe get some exercise? Wouldn’t that be something! Then, of course there’s the chore of dusting off all the pollen that is filming every bit of flat surface I can see. Ah, Spring time!

HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew will be up at the Lake this weekend finishing off the last wall that’s been insulated in the Woodhouse – and hopefully also relaxing just a bit!

Have a great day – I’m off!

Briefly …

Yours truly made a quick trip to NY this past weekend …. had a nice visit with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew.  We managed to get the water going at the lake … and I was able to take a tour of all the work that they have been doing.

Floors have been replaced … and there is a new/enlarged bathroom with space for a summer and a WINTER toilet!  (More on that later, I am sure.)

To pay for all of this, of course, we are conserving where we can.

One square, or two?

PS  I learned to play Bejeweled Blitz while visiting … and may never forgive the perpetrators!

Visitation

Yup, that strange noise that JBD heard while she was making her lunch … you know … the one that got Ruby all hot and bothered (not that it takes a lot, now that the night noises are back, to get our Ruby going)?

It was one strong critter … that’s all I can say.

Seems like he (or she) was kinda hungry, too.  (Hope the fare was satisfactory.)

Oh, and I won’t be taking any nighttime strolls for a while.

Nah … too busy, anyway.

Much, much, much too busy!

😉

Sheesh!

HollyCornblog Saves the Day

So, this tree here was uprooting itself and about to fall on the boathouse up at the lake.  BUT, HollyCornblog spent the day up there badgering tree guys and finally convincing one of them to come up and take this scary leaner down.

No pics (yet) of its current state, but … well done HollyCornblog!

Meanwhile, she reports that there is also now room in the new bathroom area for our winter toilet!

Did I already say well done?  I am SO looking forward to not having to go to the outhouse when the snow flies in November!

What else?  Well, have you downloaded your Royal Wedding app yet?  Apparently the iPhone developers are more into it that the Android folks are.  (Why do I feel secretly proud of that?)

On the Breakers front … they lost a close one on Saturday to the reconstituted and relocated Washington Freedom (now magicJack and located in Florida).   Next up SkyBlue FC on 5/1 in Cambridge.  We can’t go – but the game will be on TV, too (FSC-6PM)!

And here’s what the lake looked like yesterday … luckily there was no wind, or that tree would have been down in a heartbeat.

Let’s hope it’s this calm in a couple of weeks when HollyCornblog, CharlieHopbrew and I are trying to get the dock in (brrrrrrr)!

Get that fire going NOW!!!
