Just One Quick Thing

That cartoon in the New York Post? Disgusting. Ridiculous.

Everyone’s focusing on the racial aspect of it which is bad enough — but the guns? We’re trying to work our way out of crises on every front, created by the brutal and asinine Bush administration. And all you guys have time to do at the Post is present this kind of crap?

If you didn’t know the cartoon was offensive, then you are incredibly, incredibly, incredibly lame. And if you did know, then you’re despicable.

It’s time to grow up. The ranting of the far right and the racists and the reactionaries is looking more and more ridiculous, isn’t it? I sure think so.

Wednesday Morning

Well, all I can say is yikes!  Once again I am running late– more precisely, running out the door!

I seem to be on the winning side of fighting off a cold, but still feeling a little bleary and low-energy.

For your reading pleasure — actually more viewing pleasure — here’s a photo and brief blurb about Obama receiving an autographed sneaker from Shaquille O’Neal. The photo boggled my mind. Admittedly, I’m easily boggled this morning!

And here’s an article from the Post about Sarah P’s rocky homecoming.  You betcha!

Tuesday Starting Slowly …

I’m running late this morning, partly because I’m still getting caught up in playing with my new, upgraded, WordPress dashboard! I see that I lost the locations widget in my sidebar. Guess I’ll have to work on that tonight!

We watched the Duke Tennessee game last night, and Tennessee looked incredibly rattled by the Duke defense. They came within striking distance a couple of times but never really got any momentum going. Duke is looking more and more like a contender, and I’m happy to see coach P. Doing well!

What else? We’ve had a string of beautiful days here in New Hampshire, and it begins to definitely feel like we’re turning the corner toward spring. The quality of the light has changed significantly, and the dogs are getting very restless and unsettled. I think that means that the deer are moving. Depending on how things go this late winter/early spring, we may need to make another decision about whether or not to feed the deer.

Sounds like Cheney is a tad peevish with Dubya for not pardoning his tool Scooter.  We like it when Dick is po’d and out of office.  We hope he’s miserable.

Finally, here’s A-rod – having steroid cream applied – thanks to The Late Show for this footage!

I get back on track shortly, I promise. For now, gotta run!

WordPress Upgrade

Wow – the headache of upgrading to the latest version of wordpress seems to be over (unless I am dreaming – which feels entirely possible at the moment).  I found an automatic upgrade plugin that seems to have worked on JordanCornblog.  Now all I need to do is make a donation to the developer … KEITH DSOUZA … send him a grateful e-mail … and go watch some b-ball.  (I really do feel like I must be dreaming – it was SO EASY!)

Can Anyone Beat UConn? Lincoln?

I believe that the answer to that question is a resounding no.  Oklahoma might have the slimmest of chances … but barring injuries, I don’t see anyone getting in the way of the Huskies’ march toward a national championship.  The battle will be to see who the other three teams are in the Final Four.

NC State picked it up in a game honoring Kay Yow – knocking off Virginia in a sea of pink.  Their match-up, dubbed “Hoops for Hope,” celebrated Yow and cancer survivors everywhere!

Tonight’s Duke-Tennessee game should be interesting.  Like just about any game involving ranked teams other than UConn, either team could win on any given night.  My money is on Tennessee … just because.

Other news?  I am starving, so this will be brief.  How’s that?

According to a story on the Huffington Post, Lincoln has been ranked by historians as our best president.   The worst?  Not Bush.  How can that be?  “Rated worst overall were James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, William Henry Harrison and Warren G. Harding.”  And Papa Bush ranked higher than Jimmy Carter.  Not that I’m biased or anything, but that strikes me as plain ridiculous.  Here’s a compendium of rankings from Wikipedia.

The Boston Herald had an article on the Breakers this morning … nothing really new, but good to see the press.  Get your tickets now – it’s gonna be great!

Slow Starting Sunday

Hmmm – the usual internet issues this morning – and an e-mail from FairPoint indicating that my webspace is now available.  Hey FairPoint – it ain’t my webspace that’s the problem.  Could you maybe help me with the little e-mail issue that I’ve now contacted you about TWICE?  (Never mind the time spent waiting on the phone – and trying to contact you via that Chat link that you told us to use … all to no avail.)  FairPoint – I’m not liking you so much these days.  Hmmmm – wonder if I should start a Facebook Group – FairpOint Haters.  Bet there already is one.

Anyway – miscellaneous stuff this AM:

“The U.S. roster features 13 players from the 2008 Olympic gold medal champions, including three-fourths of the starting back line in captain Christie Rampone and flank defenders Heather Mitts and Lori Chalupny. With Kate Markgraf pregnant, Olympian Rachel Buehler and uncapped Kendall Fletcher will compete for playing time, although Shannon Boxx also trained at center back during the recently completed camp. Boxx has twice been named the MVP of the Algarve Cup (2004 and 2006). Buehler made her international debut last year at the Algarve Cup.

Sundhage named three relatively inexperienced midfielders to go along with Olympians Boxx, Lindsay Tarpley, Heather O’Reilly and Lloyd. Among midfielders Angie Woznuk (6 caps, 1 goal), Tina DiMartino (1/0) and Kacey White (15/0), only Woznuk has attended the Algarve Cup before, playing in two matches last year.

With forward Wambach not quite game-ready as she nears the end of her comeback from a broken leg, the striking responsibilities will fall to Kai, the USA’s leading scorer last year with 15 goals, young forwards Amy Rodriguez and Megan Rapinoe, and Olympic hero Angela Hucles, who can of course also play in the midfield. 2008 Olympics goalkeepers Hope Solo and Nicole Barnhart make up the remainder of the roster.

  • Interesting to me that Lil is not on the roster – but apparently wanted to be.  (Can’t find the article where I read that- but I’ll keep looking. Maybe check BigSoccer – where controversies are born!)
  • Here’s a nice piece about new Breaker (and Lady Vol Goalkeeper) Jaimel Johnson.  The Breakers picked her with the last pick of the draft – and she sounds very psyched to be joining the WPS and moving to Boston.  “Johnson, who hails from Dayton, Ohio, made her mark on the record books at the University of Tennessee, where she became the only goalkeeper in the program’s history to be named NSCAA All-American.”  Best of luck, Jaimel!
  • Six new players have finalized contracts with Sky Blue FC … Brazilian Rosana, Australians Sarah Walsh and Collette McCallum, and Americans Cori Alexander, Keeley Dowling, and Jenny Hammond.

Time for breakfast!

Bipartisan Schmartisan

So the stimulus package has passed, as the sun rises on this beautiful Saturday morning.  It wouldn’t have, without the help of Arlen Specter, Olympia Snow, and Susan Collins – courageous, centrist Republicans in a sea of dissembling, disingenuous, faux bipartisan doofusses mouthing old platitudes and marching in lockstep.  Why?  Putting politics first, it seems to me.  Meanwhile Obama’s forgiveness of Joe Lieberman seems to have reaped rewards … at least on this go ’round.  And the GOP is working hard to make Judd Gregg a hero – as opposed to a confused dude who woke up one morning and found himself in a Talking Heads song!

Talking Heads Lyrics

Of course the question is whether the bill has been gutted in ways that will make it less effective as a stimulus.  I was bummed to see some of the changes – but getting it through (and in the face of childish  Republican stonewalling, no less) was the main thing – flawed or not.  Maddow did a great piece last night on the silliness of the GOP arguments against the plan – and how they actually got sillier as time went on.  The GOP’s contribution to our political discourse has slipped a wee bit since the days of their self proclaimed founder Mr. Lincoln.

And is it not crazy-making how the GOP is suddenly so fixed on the deficit and on not making our children pay for things that we’re legislating?  Jon Stewart had a great go ’round with John Sununu the Younger on Thursday night on that subject. Watch Jon kick John’s butt … nice!

The GOP is behaving as if history started with the Obama election … and their behavior and decisions from November 3, 2008 back simply didn’t happen.  That kind of thinking absolutely drives me wild!  (Having grown up in an alcoholic family – it’s also very familiar.  What happened yesterday didn’t happen, right?  Right!)  Finally (at least on this subject) here’s a wonderful piece by Bob Cesca, describing the “new” Republican voice.  How much more deeply into the underbrush can they go?  Stay tuned – Obama seems to be driving them wild.

Here is the transcript of Paul Hodes’ appearance on Maddow Thursday night.  (Oh, and here’s the link to the video …)  Also – check out the next video (after the commercial break – Maddow on Obama and Lincoln.  Cool! Continue reading

Breaks My Heart

First off, you have to watch this video and sign the petition.  It addresses the sad and dangerous fact that “on December 19, 2008, Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and seeking to nullify the marriages of 18,000 devoted same-sex couples solemnized before Prop 8 passed.”  Ken Starr is still as useful a human being as he ever was, apparently.  (And is it me, or does “solemnized” seem a slightly provocative word choice in this context …)  Probably me.

Meanwhile Judd Gregg’s withdrawal apparently surprised Obama … and maybe Gregg as well.  Personally, I wonder if all the brouhaha about his recusing himself and not voting on the stimulus package contributed to his withdrawal.  Something surely changed his mind.  And it sounds like it wasn’t political (he says he’s not running again).  Paul Hodes was on Maddow last night (thanks for the tip, PaulaLR) discussing it all.  I missed it (dang) … and haven’t been able to find any video (yet).  If anyone out there beats me to it, let me know, okay?

For now, on the Maddow front, here she is interviewing Patrick Leahy (on Air America) about his Truth Commission proposal.  Might just be the only way to bring the truth to light.

At the other end of the journalistic spectrum, we have the smarmy and disingenuous Juan Williams, who’s finally gone far enough down the smarmy and disingenuous path that NPR is disavowing him (at least when he’s on Fox News).   He apparently made a comment comparing Michelle O to Stokely Carmichael and then had to ‘splain himself.  (Of course, the tenor of his comments made it clear that being compared to Stokely was a bad thing – not a sentiment that I share … but he was on Fox, for goodness sake.)  Anyway, I’d forgotten about his smarmy and disingenuous role in the whole Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill mess – where he defended Clarence and denigrated Hill – and somehow left out the possibly-related-fact of his own sexual harassment proclivities.  Juan, Juan, Juan.  We get enough of the smarmy and disingenuous stuff from Joe Lieberman.

Breakers single game tickets go on sale today at 9 AM …  and the NY Times published a nice piece about Kelly Smith.  I hadn’t realized that she played her college soccer here in the States – at Seton Hall.   South Orange was treated to some good soccer, back in the day!

Tennessee topped Alabama last night … and I’m returning the women’s b-ball widget to my sidebar.  (I removed it this week when folks were having problems with seeing the sidebar – but have since found the culprit – and the widget wasn’t it!

On the B-ball TV schedule, we’ve got:

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13
Niagara at Loyola (MD) 4:00 ESPNU
North Carolina at Florida State 6:30 Fox/Comcast/NE Sports Net
Clemson at Duke 7:30 Fox/Comcast/NE Sports Net

Have a great Friday … and be careful out there – it’s the first of a series … of Friday the 13th’s!

Happy Birthday, Mr. President

Abraham LincolnLincoln’s birthday … always an important date in my Book of Days. I do wish that we had never gone the President’s Day route – just too generic for my taste.  I was not consulted, however.

Bookeaters are celebrating Mr. Lincoln’s birth with a perusal of Daniel Mark Epstein’s book, The Lincoln’s:  Portrait of a Marriage.  Somehow, I suspect that the marriage is going to feel a wee bit familiar.

The puzzling Rutgers women’s basketball team lost a heart breaker last night to Pitt in what was shaping up to be an upset by the Scarlet Knights.  Rutgers was looking more recognizable as a C. Vivian Stringer team, though- and it’ll be interesting to see whether they can be hitting their stride in time for the Tournament.  Here’s tonight’s b-ball schedule … all Central time, remember …

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12
Michigan State at Indiana 6:00 Big Ten Network
Alabama at Tennessee 6:00 Fox Sports Net
Missouri State at Illinois State 7:00 Missouri Cable Sports Network
Purdue at Minnesota 8:00 Big Ten Network
Mississippi State at Ole Miss 8:00 Fox Sports Net

As an aside – some people had been having trouble seeing the sidebars here, in recent days.  I did some research and discovered that it apparently had something to do with the coding in the b-ball schedule.  So I’m pasting it in in plain text now.  Not as pretty – but it seems to work better!

I was going to write about the stimulus package, but the sketchy internet connection has eaten up too much of the morning.  We’re getting another wireless access point, in-house, which should help.  I’m not convinced, however, that the FairPoint connection isn’t also problematic.  Yours truly is fast becoming a FairPoint disliker – and may be making her way toward being a FairPoint hater.

Stay tuned … grrrrr!

Wednesday. That's All – Just Wednesday.

Do you live in one of America’s ten most miserable cities?   Hope not.  That would be miserable.  And speaking of miserable – I’d forgotten that Laura Ingraham existed,’til I read this on Huffington.  Glad Arlen gave her a scolding.  Nothing wrong with debate – but if we had a few fewer of these shrill, reactionary, pseudo pundits sucking up the air, I do think the world would be a better place.  I’m going to go back to forgetting that she exists …

Some good news on the presidential front:  we’ve moved from having a middle schooler to having a high schooler iin the White House!  (And I suspect that Obama is actually holding back, vocabulary-wise … whilst Dubya was stretching.)

Check your local listings, as it looks like UConn may be on TV vs. St. John’s tonight …

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11
UConn at St. John’s TBA CPTV

Nothing against St. John’s, but if I were a betting woman …

And in other B-ball news I see that T-spoon is now the interim coach at her alma mater, LA Tech!  And while I’m late on this one – here’s an LA Times article on Candace Parker’s pregnancy.  Sounds like she plans to return to the court this summer.  She’s due in May … and could return as early as mid-June.  (Hope she’s consulting with Joy Fawcett!)
