Willie, the Phillies, and Video Sillies

Yours truly went to see Willie Porter last night – an absolutely wonderful concert!  It was one of his best (in my relatively limited experience as a groupie).  He played a long and varied set and came back for several encores, with the folks at Tupelo going wild!  He’s a guitar god … really … and seems one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.  Great sense of humor, lightning quick mind, and guitar picking that dazzles.  He was joined on stage by Natalia Zuckerman, who’s got a new CD out on Willie’s label Weasel Records.  Great stuff!  Willie is at Cambridge’s Club Passim tonight … if the Phillies weren’t playing again, I’d consider a drive down … 😉

Speaking of the Phillies – what a wild and wooly game.  The ref blew a call in the 7th that let the Rays back into the game, and I was getting that sinking feeling.  We lost our satellite connection in the crazy rainstorms that swept through NH at the start of the eighth, so I switched to the computer … and then (running out of steam) to the radio … but managed to stay conscious ’til Carlos Ruiz’ grounder brought Eric Bruntlett home.  Phew – the Phils are up 2-1!

Arianna Huffington, meanwhile, has taken a pause in punditing (no doubt catching her breath before the stretch run) to share with us a compendium of video awesomeness!  Some of it’s already been posted here – but there’s great new stuff (at least to me) that’s worth a look.  Enjoy!

Oh yeah … and PB, here’s what Tracy Grammer’s up to these days … 😉

More Republicans Jump Sinking Ship to Endorse Obama

Can we be witnessing a triumph of reason? A friend in Portland Oregon sent me this news of a Republican candidate for Congress endorsing Obama. As the article appears on the Truthout.org site,

Washington – Joel Haugen, a Republican fighting a tough congressional race against the Democrats in Oregon, has fallen out with his party. The reason: his surprise endorsement of Barack Obama for the presidency.

“I believe in putting nation before party and my first priority is following my conscience with regard to what is best for America,” Haugen said in a statement issued by his office today. “I have a huge amount of respect for John McCain, but I believe that he has more of a cold war mentality.”

Haugen is just one of many Republican politicians, dubbed “Obamicans”, who have defected to Obama. The latest high-profile desertions include Scott McClellan, George Bush’s former press secretary, who endorses Obama in a taped CNN programme to be broadcast this weekend, and William Weld, the Republican governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997.

Weld, in a statement released today ahead of a press conference in New Hampshire, described Obama as “a once-in-a-lifetime candidate.”

Last weekend, Bush’s former secretary of state, Colin Powell, Obama’s biggest Republican catch so far, publicly backed the Democratic candidate.

It is unusual to see so many prominent Republican politicians and columnists shift, even allowing for the fact that party affiliations are more fluid in the US than Europe.

The ‘Obamicans’ have their own website, listing those who have endorsed Obama and exchanging views. Campaign paraphernalia is also available from Barack Obama’s team that includes a “Republicans for Obama” button badge.

According to Haugen’s campaign manager, Sarah Tiedeman, he made no secret of his views while fighting for the party nomination, telling the press about his unhappiness with Bush’s eight years in office and that he was likely to endorse Obama over McCain. He won 70% of the nomination vote.

The Republican party became increasingly “unfriendly”, Tiedemann said, and has since withdrawn all financial support.

Haugen, as a compromise, is now standing under an independent banner, though he remains a registered Republican. Tiedemann said the reaction among Republicans over his endorsement was mixed. She acknowledged it was “unusual” to make such an endorsement but Haugen “feels the Republican party has got so far from its roots.”

Other defectors include Arne Carlson, the Republican governor of Minnesota from 1991 to 1999, who wrote in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune yesterday: “The choice of governor Sarah Palin as a running mate, and the resultant shallow campaign based on fear and suspicion, looks frighteningly similar to the politics of Karl Rove [Bush’s campaign strategist].”

He described Obama as having “the potential to become a truly great president”.

McClellan, who published a book earlier this year critical of the Bush administration, accusing it of lying, told CNN he would vote for Obama because he offered the best chance of changing the way Washington works.

The founders of Republicans for Obama include a former Iowa congressman, Jim Leach; a former Rhode Island senator, Lincoln Chafee, and a former Bush fund-raiser, Rita Hauser.

Another defector this week is Ken Adelman, a foreign policy adviser to Ronald Reagan, who told the New Yorker he would endorse Obama because of McCain’s temperament, describing as weird his behavior in response when the economic meltdown began.”

The comments following the article are quite interesting, too…

Palin Going Rogue (in her Manolo Pumps)?

Apparently all is not well in the McCain campaign (no big news there, I realize).  Still, the word in Politico is that Palin and her supporters are getting impatient with the way things are going (or not going).  An ambitious lot with their eye on 2012, looks like some of them want to throw the guy what brought ’em under the bus and go their own rougish way.  Guess that’s the risk you run when two Mavericks get together.

Bret and BartAlthough Bret and Bart seemed to do okay in their day.  Simpler times, I guess.

Here are some tidbits from Politico …

Four Republicans close to Palin said she has decided increasingly to disregard the advice of the former Bush aides tasked to handle her, creating occasionally tense situations as she travels the country with them. Those Palin supporters, inside the campaign and out, said Palin blames her handlers for a botched rollout and a tarnished public image – even as others in McCain’s camp blame the pick of the relatively inexperienced Alaska governor, and her public performance, for McCain’s decline.

“She’s lost confidence in most of the people on the plane,” said a senior Republican who speaks to Palin, referring to her campaign jet. He said Palin had begun to “go rogue” in some of her public pronouncements and decisions.

“I think she’d like to go more rogue,” he said.

On the TarmacRemember this photo of Cindy and John and Sarah on the tarmac? I’d say things look a little tense.  (Click on the pic for a larger image.)

Princess Sparkle Pony says it best:  “Is it just me, or is McCain clenching both of his fists awfully tightly? Buyer’s regret? Look at the faces of Cindy and the assistant! This is not a happy exchange.”

Oh, and it’s only going to get worse … mark my words!

Yes We Can!

Check this out!  Great Dance-off video from Break.com.  You’ve gotta watch it … really!  Thanks for the tip, Alison!  And for this one, too (the Whazzup guys, eight years later)!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq8Uc5BFogE

Also, for your entertainment this Saturday morning, here’s a link to the NY Times electoral map.  You can check out the current state of the contests in each state – and create your own map.  (I made mine all blue … what liberals do when they have time on their hands … felt damn good!)

In the sports world, the Phillies are at home … and hopefully that will wake up their bats.

JoePa and the Nittany Lions go for a big win on the gridiron.  It’s an away game – and the cards are stacked against PSU and their 82 year old coaching legend … kinda …

This week. No. 3 Penn State (8-0) visits No. 9 Ohio State (7-1) in Columbus, Ohio. The Nittany Lions have lost seven straight at the Horseshoe, the last victory coming in 1978. Then again, before last Saturday, Penn State had lost nine in a row to Michigan.

More later …

Help, I'm Stranded on Second – Save Me! Save Me! (Just a Bad Dream, Phillies Fans, Really!)

How many base runners have the Phillies stranded now?  I guess the glass-half-full perspective would be that they’re creating chances and will start cashing in eventually.  (Just hope “eventually” comes within the next couple of games!)  According to the NY Times the Phils are 1 for 28 with runners in scoring position – and Ryan Howard continues to struggle mightily.

So yeah, actually, the more I write the better I feel.  Stay with me here.  The Phillies are setting records for their failure to produce in games 1 and 2.  But the series is even (miraculously.)  Now they have a day off to get themselves home, think about things, and come back at it on Saturday in Philly.  They’ve been in droughts before and come back.  The chances are there – it’s not like they’re not getting on base.  They could snap out of this at any moment – and once those floodgates open up, watch out!  Ryan Howard’s last home run was a long, long time ago … September 26th against the Nationals.  He’s due.  Very, very due.

So I’m optimistic … and if I were the Rays, I’d be nervous, actually.  Yeah!  😉

On the football front, sounds like Tom Brady may have upset the Pats powers-that-be by going his own way on his knee surgery.  The decision seems to be backfiring for him now as he battles infection and potentially faces additional procedures.

In political news, Governor Sarah Palin is slated to deliver what’s being hawked as her first policy speech … on her commitment to families with special needs … at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott.  No offense to anyone in Pittsburgh .. or anyone with special needs .. but what the f%$k???!!!  (As one commenter noted … “Hopefully they reserved the big conference room.”)

While Palin prepares for her big policy speech, cooperation and decorum continue their downward spiral within the McCain camp … and the RNC. The vicious negativism that had been (and continues to be) aimed at Obama seems to be turning inward.  Karma is a wonderful thing, eh?  The corrosiveness and bile of toxic groups eventually eats away at them, in much the way that it does for toxic individuals.  (Meanwhile, the tree-huggers and crunchy granola types and union organizers and crazy liberal NY Times readers can just kinda watch and wonder … like at the end of the Wizard of Oz … remember?)

Nice clip.  As a metaphor for the Obama campaign … it works for me!

Early voting is exploding around the country – and Salon focuses here on Florida, where the lines have been long and problems abound.   Nearly half a million people voted in Florida alone, in the first three days that they could.  From all reports the Obama campaign is very organized and very active down there – and volunteers and lawyers are everywhere – answering questions and trying to correct misinformation.

Judging from what some people were saying — at the Tuesday night rally and among those voting the next morning — Obama’s campaign didn’t have to scare anyone into participating early. “I didn’t want to take a chance of something happening and me not getting my vote in,” said Rony Francis, 43, who directs operations for a transportation company. He waited 90 minutes to vote at the North Miami library, where most of the voters who joined him were Haitians and other immigrants.

“It’s always in your mind, especially after eight years ago,” said Al Morrell, 51, a truck driver, also from North Miami. “So you gotta be a little wary.”

The night before, Tasha Thomas, 26, who works at the University of Miami’s veterinary school, had told me she’d been besieged by weird, panicky questions from supporters since she started volunteering at the Obama field office in her Miami neighborhood. People thought they couldn’t vote if their voter registration card was starting to fade, or thought they had to go back to the state where they were born to vote, even if they lived in Florida now. “It was eye-opening, how much wrong information so many people have,” she said.

Oh, and SNL continues to score with its Thursday night offering.  This week?  Will Ferrell was back as Dubya – giving Tina Fey some pointers …and endorsing an unwilling John McCain.  You’ve gotta watch the video embedded in the link above.

Want to protect the future of the Internet on Nov. 4? Contact FCC

Here’s an edited version of an email I got from Media Reform Daily – which directed me to SavetheInternet.com

“A huge decision is going to be made on Election Day that could change the lives of millions of Americans. And it’s not about Obama or McCain.

On Nov. 4, the Federal Communications Commission will vote to open unused television airwaves to provide affordable, wireless Internet services nationwide. Help sway the vote by calling Congress today.

Opening up these vacant airwaves – called white spaces — might be our best opportunity to close the digital divide. White spaces can be used to transmit an Internet signal over mountains and through concrete walls.

FCC engineers just completed an exhaustive 18-month study that shows new technology can use white spaces without harming adjacent TV signals. The agency released its report on Oct. 15 and will vote on its conclusive findings on Nov. 4.

The facts are pretty clear: White spaces can be used to deliver Internet service to people near and far. But that hasn’t stopped the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), a powerful group representing the nation’s largest media companies, from deploying their lobbyists to try to keep Americans from gaining access to these airwaves…

Time is running out. Don’t miss your chance to help make history on Election Day by urging Congress and the FCC to open up white spaces.”

At a time when so much is beyond my control, I like chipping away for constructive change on less publicized but significant issues like this. Hope you do, too.

JordanCornblog is Dragging!

The Phillies pulled out a squeaker of a win last night, and yours truly is paying the price this morning.  Well worth it, though (or I should say Werth it).  Cole Hamels looked very strong, Chase Utley came through with a first inning 2-run homer … and when (not if) Ryan Howard gets on track … watch out!  Sorry Mo and Beeg … looks like the good guys took game 1 … stay tuned (and try to catch a nap)!

Our evening was perfect in all regards.  We had an excellent dinner and very, very companionable dinner guests … and the discussion ranged from billing codes (in the right company, it can be very entertaining, believe me) to Rachel Maddow, to our shared appreciation for Boltgirl and Princess Sparkle Pony.  I also learned of some new blogs … but the game seems to have erased them from my memory (at least temporarily).  Something about a Hobo … uh … can you help Dr. P?  😉

Oh, and we learned a new game – Bananagrams!  Boltgirl probably already knows about it – but you must check it out.

On the political front, voter suppression continues to be the darkly looming cloud over the increasingly Obama-esque landscape.

Bullworth Time?  Rocky times for the GOP.  We read that the Mavericks’ campaign is in dangerous disarray and the honeymoon appears to be coming to a rocky end in McPalin land. The video is definitely worth a peek – and here’s Brian Williams on his interview with the two of ’em:

“When you see the two of them together, the chemistry is just not there. You do wonder, is John McCain starting to blame her for things? Blaming himself? Is she blaming him?” asked the highly regarded NBC newsman. “And maybe they don’t feel they can win right now, so they are missing that intensity. That was the thing that struck me more than anything. You almost wonder why they wanted the two of them sitting next to each other.”

It’s the Shoes, Stupid!  Yeah – Princess Sparkle Pony has gotta be loving the focus on Palin’s Manolo Blahniks!  It’s just too easy, isn’t it?

A Quick Thought

This is a serious question: does anyone know a Republican who has specific reasons to support John McCain?  I have heard and read sound bites, dogma, fear mongering, accusations, bigotry, and character assassination.  I have heard about Senator Obama being “scary” and “not like us” and “palling around with terrorists.”

What I have not hear or read, anywhere, is why an individual supports John McCain.  None of my Republican-leaning friends have offered any.  I know I mainly read left-of-center stuff, but seriously… WHY would I vote McCain?  Argue for him!  Convince me!

Sadly, this election in some ways reminds me of the last one, when frankly even many Democrats couldn’t come up with a good reason to vote for John Kerry — other than “he’s not Bush.”  That’s not a strategy that wins.

So tell me Republicans, why vote McCain?  Why do you support him?
