Impeach Bush … Please!

The NH State Legislature votes today on a bill sponsored by State Rep. Betty Hall calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.  Here’s some video of the NH “Impeach Bush” rally back in February … and more … and you’ll find more when you open up these two on YouTube.  It would be nice to put some small damper on things as Bush and the Pope hang out together today … I’ll keep you posted as news emerges about this vote in Concord!

Recipe Reprise and Other Things at Sunrise

The latest on the Cindy McCain recipe debacle seems to be that the McCain powers that be are blaming it all on an intern.  Oh great … find the lowest-ranking person in the room and blame everything on him/her.  Now where have we seen that before?  (Can you say torture?)

Tonight in North Carolina Hillary and Obama will go toe-to-toe for the first time in six weeks, in preparation for Tuesday’s votes.  I am looking forward to seeing how they engage after these weeks of sniping and skirmishing.  Typically, Hillary shines in the debate format, but Barack has been getting better and better.  I doubt that we’ll see anything decisive tonight … but you never know!  (And if you’d like to track the superdelegates in your state, or somewhere else, check out this state-by-state superdelegate table for the latest counts!)

In a passionate plea for journalism that offers substance, Robert Reich addresses the debased reporting of the whole “bitterness” issue and calls Tim Russert to task (oh-so-rightly) for swimming in spin.  Along the same lines, here’s Eugene Robinson’s trenchant take on Hillary’s elitist and condescending attack on Barack for being elitist and condescending.

Okay – I’m off.  See you at the debate!?

McCain Family Recipes and Other Political Fakery

Apparently the “family recipes” posted on John McCain’s website are not culled from hand-written, ingredient-smudged 3×5 cards handed down from Cindy McCain’s mother to her daughter. It seems they may not be family recipes at all. It seems they may be … gulp … fake. Now how could that possibly be? Are you saying that Cindy McCain is not what she appears? Of course she is!

Hillary at Bronco'sAnd what of Hillary downing shots at Bronco’s? There’s genius in the image, that’s for sure. Between this and her recent comments about learning to hunt, she’s certainly making her case with those Western and Central Pennsylvania Deer Hunter voters that Barack misspoke with (or about, or on, or over).

Katrina vanden Heuvel writes that Obama was spot on in his comments … and I tend to agree. If Hillary’s calculations are correct and she wins votes by throwing back shots and jumping all over Obama for his “elitist” comments then, quite ironically, she will be proving his comments absolutely true, won’t she?

Meanwhile (and again from Politico) here’s an interesting piece about what Clinton wishes she could say … but won’t.

Turning to the Bushies for a bit, we have Stephen Hadley confusing Nepal with Tibet. Stupidity, it seems, is catching. And Bush, who’s stiffed the American people for seven years and counting … doesn’t want to stiff Colombia … oh no!  And I also read that Rumsfeld is going to be publishing his memoirs. I won’t even link that … it shall be relegated to the dustbin of JordanCornblog (if not history)!

Sorry

Hope you weren’t inconvenienced by Error Messages!  I’ve been wrestling (unsuccessfully) with an upgrade and have given up for now … so things should calm down around here … at least for the time being.  Meanwhile, I’m going to put some distance between me and this here computer so I don’t do any irreparable database damage!

USWNT and Canada Take It Deep Into PK's Before It's Over

Carli LloydThe USWNT and Canada played to a 0-0 stalemate in regulation, a 1-1 tie in overtime, and then the US won it 6-5 in the shootout. While the US dominated in shots (24-10) and possession, they were not able to pull away from the Big Red Machine, in no small part due to the Herculian efforts of Canadian Goalie Erin McLeod. Carli Lloyd scored for the US on a blast in the 107th minute, and then Melissa Tancredi answered in the 116th with a header that sent OT on to PK’s! From there it went …

USA CANADA
Lloyd GOAL Sinclair GOAL
Hucles GOAL Franko Left Post
Chalupny Saved Tancredi GOAL
Rampone GOAL Rustad GOAL
Wambach GOAL Lang GOAL
Osborne GOAL Wilkinson GOAL
O'Reilly GOAL Timko Saved

… and USWNT goalie Nicole Barnhart came up huge with the save that put the USWNT over the top (and allowed those of us who were “watching” on MatchTracker to go to bed)!”It was an exciting game, you could hear it in the crowd’s reaction,” said Coach Pia Sundhage. “The way we played in the second half was very good and we created a lot of chances. This is the environment that really matters when you have the word “final” attached to it and being pushed to penalty kicks it’s one of the best things that could happen to the U.S. team in this tournament. You can’t match the feeling in practice of taking penalty kicks in a game like this, and it could happen in the Olympics. But I am very happy for the team as there were so many good things out there tonight.”It sounds like this would have been an absolutely amazing game to see. Too bad, the TV coverage just ain’t there. I kinda wonder if it’s detritus from the Ryan era … the Bronze at the World Cup and the generally uninspired soccer leading to a falling-off of interest. At any rate – can’t wait for May 3 … 7Pm ET, when we’ll be able to see the USWNT on TV for the first time when the play Australia in Birmingham, Alabama!

Here are some shots from Isiphotos … nice to have a visual or two!

Kai and USWNT Go for Another Championship!

Natasha KaiThe USWNT faces Canada tonight for the CONCACAF Qualifying Championship.  Game time is 7:30 PM MT and it looks like MatchTracker is again the only venue for following the match.  No, I take that back.  It looks like you might be able to subscribe to the live feed via JustinTV.  Check it out!

And while you’re waiting for the match to begin, here are 11 Questions with Natasha Kai (who’s been a goal-scoring machine for the USWNT of late).  She, Abby Wambach, and Lindsay Tarpley each have six goals as of my last count.   Not bad!♠

Fundamentalism-It's All the Same … Mormon, Islamic, Christian … and John Yoo, Too!

The news out of Eldorado, Texas is ugly, ugly, ugly. We’re told that the “polygamist sect ruled with fear.” And while the news depicts them as a “splinter group” I’d say that there’s a clear connection between so-called mainstream fundamentalism and these groups that the mainstream would like to repudiate when they come to light. The connections include a tendency toward black and white thinking, an uncritical respect for authority, and large gobbets of fear.

Here’s an interesting and disturbing site tracing (from a sympathetic perspective) the fundamentalist strain of Mormonism through history. I hadn’t realized that the main element defining this strain is the practice of polygamy. Now, according to this site, Warren Jeffs’ practices are not in keeping with the mainstream Mormon Fundamentalists, and the article I’ve linked digs into many arcane theological discourses that I am sure are meaningful and interesting to someone!

Disturbing is what I find them. Hard to get my head around this belief system and not see it simply through the lense of men finding yet another way to assert control over women and children. Dolores Chew addressed this idea back in 2005:

As feminists we need to remind ourselves that though there are chinks in the armour, patriarchy is alive and well and like capitalism and its corollary imperialism, it’s constantly finding new and innovative ways to re-invent itself. Patriarchy is about power — for some, while convincing all men that no matter how oppressed they are by political and economic systems, there is always someone below them who they can control — their wife, their mother, their sister, their daughter. Fundamentalism too is about power and control, often in collusion with patriarchy. What we need to remind ourselves is that we cannot be smug. Fundamentalism is to be found everywhere. Every tradition and culture has the possibilities of fundamentalism. And fundamentalism has little to do with religion and everything to do with politics and control. In fact we need to remind ourselves that religiosity, spirituality have answered and continue to respond to human needs. They are not in question. It is the manipulation of people’s religiosity and the exploitation of a sense of insecurity, powerlessness, of not knowing where to turn to in times of economic and political crisis, when there is a sense of hopelessness and helplessness that fundamentalist forces move into the vacuum, with promises of formulaic, quick fixes that are grabbed onto by those who feel they need something to hold on to.

Sound familiar? The fear? The quick fixes? The patriarchal mindset? The fear-mongering and the platitudes of the Bushies and the Neocons aren’t that far from the fear-mongering and platitudes of Warren Jeffs and his cronies in Eldorado, or Osama Bin Laden and his cronies in the mountains of Pakistan. It’s all in the same ballpark, folks. We need to wake up and see it for what it is.

Chris EdleyMeanwhile the Dean of Berkeley Law School has explained why he won’t fire John Yoo … he wasn’t the decider. I was particularly interested to see that the aforementioned Dean is Chris Edley, a highly respected individual in his own right (and fellow Swarthmore grad).

It brought me up a little short, to see that Chris was the Dean, and inclined me to delve a little deeper, respecting him as I do. Here’s his entire statement. As I read it, it’s pretty damning of Professor Yoo, while supporting due process, academic freedom, and other “small protections” that I am quite sure Professor Yoo would have gladly overturned in specious legal memos for the deciders just a few years ago. I get why you couldn’t fire him, Chris … but I sure hope he’s miserable or (even better) reflective and repentant (fat chance, I realize).

By the way, in other Swarthmore-related news, HBD MLD!

Midday Tidbits

Still in Mexico and prepping for the final vs. Canada, the USWNT reently relaxed with dinner out and a serenade from Coach Pia Sundhage and team doc Scott Powell, who has quite a musical resume.

Meanwhile, here’s an article from Team Canada’s site. This is the first Olympics for the Canadian women … meaning that Charmaine Hooper never made it to that venue … a fact that I found quite surprising.  Here’s to a good tourney (but not TOO good) for our northern neighbors!

It Should Happen to Yoo

In hearings on Capital Hill, the US “Justice” Department continues to dazzle with precious parsing about the October 2001 Torture Memo. The word play would have had folks all over Bill Clinton a few years ago. Guess it’s a different world now, huh? Attorney General Michael “Stonewall” Mukasey got a little bit further in his answers than his predecessor who, you’ll recall … couldn’t. But Senator Feinstein struggled mightily and came up with very little. It was an exasperating exchange with yet another public servant from the Bush Administration.

Meanwhile, those who actually “operationalized” the wishes of our imperial President … people on the ground like Lynndie England … are suffering the consequences. She’s been thoroughly repudiated by the self-righteous white guys who wouldn’t actually spit on the likes of her. No, they’ll just use the Lynndie England’s of the world when it serves their ends, and then turn around and go to church and spout religious platitudes that far too many in America continue to swallow. (Oh, and not Reverand Wright’s church, mind you … a much nicer church, where you can authorize the gouging out of people’s eyes and give thanks for your salvation without worrying about cognitive dissonance.)

Meanwhile, people like John Yoo, author of the infamous memo that Feinstein and Mukasey were sparring about, is a law professor at UC Berkeley. Some individual made that hiring decision. Specific individuals work with this dude. Particular people cut his paychecks, sign them, go to his classes, evaluate his work. So who are these individuals? Isn’t anyone at UC Berkeley upset about this?

Guess the buck stopped at Lynndie England.

USWNT Qualifies for Beijing, and JordanCornblog Sleeps In!

No, these two facts are not related. Yes, the USWNT won their Olympic qualifying match 3-0 against Costa Rica. All of the goals involved Natasha Kai and all were scored in the second half, as Costa Rica successfully bunkered in for the entire first half and then some. The US adjusted, though, taking it to the flanks and eventually breaking through with the game winner … and then some!

Smiling PiaA smiling Sundhage on her feelings on qualifying for the 2008 Olympics:“Look at my face. I am really happy for the team and the fact that we turned it around in the second half.”

Canada defeated Mexico 1-0 to capture the other CONCACAF berth. They’ll travel to the Beijing Olympics this summer for what I understand is to be their first-every Olympics! Congratulations to our northern neighbors (and I must say I’m a little surprised that this is their first Oly’s).

The USWNT plays Canada on Saturday at 7:30 PM MT for the Championship. As usual, there’s no TV … but MatchTracker will bring us the game. (I find it very unfortunate that Fox, ESPN, etc. didn’t bother with this important tournament. We haven’t laid eyes on this team since Pia took over!)

Lori Chalupny was named Player of the Match … and I’ll update all the stats tonight!
