’nuff said … you go grrrrrl!
As HollyCornblog noted … it had TEETH!
This morning the air has the feel of a September morning – crystal clear and clean, with shadows and sun dapples etched in bright relief. No confusing what’s what, as the breeze riffles the leaves and I take a deep breath – especially appreciating the fact that it’s late-July, NOT September … with weeks of summer still stretching ahead.
So what do we have today? Best wishes to Boltgirl on her tune-up … and we look forward to the frozen peas rehab posts! (I have fond memories of RPE using frozen peas on one knee and frozen corn on the other … during one high school soccer or basketball season .. but can’t find the photo … luckily for RPE!)
One a sad note, we mourn the passing of another friend … Steve Ryan … who succumbed to cancer Saturday evening. I think of Steve in this moment, right now … stopping … as the sun shimmers on summer leaves.
I was also sad to read, on Saturday night, of the death of Bill Cowher’s wife Kaye at age 54 … who sounded like a very interesting, athletic, involved woman. She was an excellent basketball player (along with her twin suster Faye) at NC State (where she met Bill … and where she played for Kay Yow) … a big proponent of Title IX, and the mother of athletes herself. Interestingly, she and her sister Faye also were featured as a set of twins in one or another of those old Doublemint gum commercials … as well as the yogurt ad pictured here. (I haven’t yet been able to find the one they were in …)
On a happier note, the Breakers won last night (3-1 over the Red Stars) and have moved into 3rd place in the WPS standings. (Who’d a thunk!) Dewd says it’s the addition of Tarpley and her play-making to the midfield. (I don’t often argue with Dewd!) Whatever it is, it’s nice to see Kelly Smith getting 2 goals … and an assist on the 3rd! Here’s an interview with Kelly from Shekicks … where she talks about Lil’s phenomenal fitness and names the best players in the league “… Marta of FC Gold Pride, Formiga of Chicago Red Stars and Amy LePeilbet of the Boston Breakers.”
There’s a new magazine in town! Breakers Alyssa Naeher, Leslie Osborne and Tiffany Weimer are all contributors to Our Game Magazine, a new women’s soccer specific publication … with Weimer being the editor, apparently! Page through a copy here … and enjoy!
And in case you hadn’t heard … the Phillies pulled out another win over the Rockies and are moving up in the standings. Let’s keep it up, guys! 😉
Today we gather to remember Judy Popkin … and another morning, 11 years ago … 7/31/99 to be exact.
RIP Judy … RIP.
Ah, the possibility
of the uncut tree
all the blank pages it holds
the unwritten words that
will carve their way
into branches
leaves
roots
The unopened gifts of morning
the untrammeled untraveled
unimagined unseen
unsounded unmet
the ground still wet
or fresh with snow
something lost
or found.
I love the sunrise
for its seductive rays
inching themselves across
life’s contours
inviting darkness out of corners
as night recedes
leaving the day smooth and untracked
like tide-soothed sands along the shore
I stand above the city
as the slow light
holds steadfast
a dull glow in the face of fog.
The sun is up
and day begins to settle
subtle and persevering
above the sparkling bay.
Below, the highway stretches
itself tight across the terrain.
The cars making their daily journeys
glisten with the possibility of changing
direction
taking the wrong exit
to the left or right
place.
How does one leave
without leaving behind?
How can I write the words
and let the tree stand?
Where does the dew go dry to
as the sun peels off the ordinariness of it all?
What will this day reveal?
What will the sun let fall?
Wow … I’ve got some catching up to do here. Thanks, AMR, for adding some content.
I had also noticed that story about our new Rabbi here in Concord … and thought it was wonderful (except, perhaps, for the fact that it remains newsworthy).
So we’ve got some dampish, grey weather here – and I’m thinking that the desperate plants must be feeling hopeful. (That’s pretty much how I’m feeling after the Phillies’ win last night … on equally substantial grounds, I might add!)
Gonna update my movie reviews in the sidebar after seeing a couple … actually three … movies in recent days. That’s a lot for me … wonder if I’m avoiding something! 😉
And from the Beeg, I’ve got a nice listing of the winners in the Washington Post’s recent neologism contest … for your reading pleasure as I head out the door to run. (My fitness/health is apparently having a deleterious effect on the health of JordanCornblog … a quandry indeed!)
Oh, and before I forget … A-Rod remains stuck at 599 and Dick Cheney is still with us. I wonder if the two are somehow related …
Once again, The Washington Post has published the winning submissions to its yearly neologism contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words. (NOTE: Please see comment below – as these neologisms are apparently not from the most recent Washington Post Contest … newer ones are listed in the comment. Thanks, Empress of Style for updating us!)

The Washington Post’s Style Invitational also asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.
Here are this year’s winners:
1. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. There’s a lot of it in Congress…..

7. Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.
8. Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
9. Karmageddon (n): it’s like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it’s like, a serious bummer.
10 Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
11. Glibido (v): All talk and no action.
12. Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

15. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you’re eating.
And the pick of the literature:
16. Ignoranus (n): A person who’s both stupid and an asshole.
Although I tend to avoid organized religion as much as possible, I have always had a strange fascination with Judaism. The history and community around the faith had, in the past, struck a chord within me. It was not until recently that I recognized the massive difference between Conservative Judaism and those who are part of the reform movement.
Given this new found awareness, I have altered my statements to say that those who are part of the reform movement are extremely loving and accepting people. I have found that my Jewish friends tend to be some of the most open, kind and generous people that I know. They are focused on social issues and donate a significant amount of their time and energy in trying to advance those causes. I always said, if I were to ever choose a religion to follow, it would be Judaism.
This story is a shining example of how people can get past gender and sexuality to see a person for who they really are. Props to the members of my local community who welcomed this woman with open arms and an open heart. And welcome to Concord, Rabbi Nafshi.
Sorry to be rather absent here … I’ll blame it on my Droid (which I obsessively check for news of Dick Cheney’s demise) and on my new exercise regimen (which I am feeling great about) and I’m sure there are other excuses which I can pull out, if necessary.
I did see a piece of unbelievable Philadelphia news recently … the Phillies chose a Biddle in June’s MLB draft. I love it! A Biddle who went to Germantown Friends, no less. How Olde Philadelphia can you get? What’s next – a Cadwalader drafted by the Eagles? A Clothier playing for the 76ers?
Jesse Biddle, the young man in question, is a Left-Handed pitcher with a 94 mph fastball … not bad for someone just coming out of high school!
Beyond that snippet, we won’t discuss te Phillies phurther. It’s all starting to pheel way too phamiliar!
PS The Breakers play FC Gold Pride tonight … hope they can keep their string of wins alive. This’ll be a stern test!
The older I get, the more I find myself thinking about DaddyCornblog.
I think about what he was experiencing in his life at the age I am now. At 57 years old, MommyCornblog had been dead for seven years, and he was several years into his second marriage. He was in the planning stages of designing his dream house, which he would move into in his 60th year.
The more I think about him, the more I appreciate him. I find myself in certain situations, trying to imagine what sort of advice he would give. When he was alive it was just about the furthest thing from my mind to ask him for advice. But now, poignantly, I know that I would value it.
He was steady and sure.
In the thrall of MommyCornblog’s worldview, that just seemed boring for the most part. Now I see that it wasn’t boring at all. In fact, given MommyCornblog’s antics, it was probably extremely challenging to stay steady through all those years.
One of the gifts that MommyCornblog left behind was quite a collection of photographs. Ironically, what they chronicle for me now is a warm connection that I didn’t really appreciate when was there
That’s a lesson that I keep close each day, and strive to learn from.
I’m grateful to you, DaddyCornblog.
You made my life possible in so many ways that continue to sustain and nourish me.
So, godspeed … and Go Phillies!
I’ll see if any ideas for posts come to me as I jog … this beautiful morning.
Want to get out there before the heat settles in … be right back … maybe!
😉
My fingers are crossed that Obama will move ahead and nominate Elizabeth Warren to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
I just love this …

And here she is … from “Capitalism, A Love Story” …

Promote Elizabeth Warren, President Obama – she deserves it and we need her looking over Timmy’s shoulder!
Dick, Dick, Dick … everyone and her/his grandmother is sending you get well wishes after your latest stint in the OR.
Me?
Not so much.
I’m just imagining what it would have been like if Dick were a regular American and had the kind of healthcare coverage that so many regular Americans have.
Imagine the impact it might have had on history if, starting at age 37 when he had his first heart attack, he hadn’t had the wherewithal to have the best care available.
At 69 now … he would have been 37 in what … 1978? What if it had all ended there?
Hard to imagine a Bush II presidency without Dick. Waterboarding? Oil oozing everywhere? The list goes on and on. No Liz Cheney? (She might exist, but would we know about her? Probably not.)
Phew! Check out this map of Dick’s Healthcare History … it’s a fascinating read.
Some may say that Dick isn’t the root of all evil … and I agree, that’s a simplistic view. But there are more unhappy things than imagining a world in which Dick’s healthcare didn’t extend his life beyond 1978 .
