Michelle Obama in 2008 America

I was going to post this earlier this morning, but then decided that it deserved its own place. It’s an excellent piece from Salon explicating the reaction to Michelle Obama.   Read it … and consider this recent post from Princess Sparkle Pony.  All I can think of is the Obama’s daughters … and how challenging this must all be to deal with as parents.  I’m with you, Michelle … looking for those few, remarkable moments when I actually feel proud of America!

Oh No, Say it Ain't So! Phillies Have Lost Six in a Row!!!

Yup, that’s six in a row – and 8 out of their last 10. They lost to the Athletics last night 5-2. Anyone who grew up in Philly – or has spent any amount of time there – probably knows the feelings of panic and depression that are beginning to rear their ugly heads right about now. C’mon guys … don’t go there! 😉

Solo Reacts During WWCMeanwhile, as stories and reactions to the USWNT Olympic roster appear in the media and blogosphere, it’s interesting how the whole Solo-Scurry controversy seems to be what people focus on (unless they are writing about a local favorite) … this piece from the LA Times being but one example.

That Solo was chosen over Scurry … and that Barnhart was, as well … is to my mind no big surprise. Scurry herself didn’t seem surprised … although in the interview linked in the above piece, she appears to blame it on not having received enough playing time, which strikes me as unfortunate.

Who knows what would have happened if Ryan hadn’t been such a doofus to begin with. Perhaps Scurry would have retired gracefully, as would have been fitting. As things stand, I can easily imagine that Bri feels her legacy as a player has been besmirched by that Brazil debacle and wants to go out on a high(er) note. To my mind, though, a graceful retirement is the best course. As this drags on, she will be more and more remembered as the keeper who wouldn’t leave – rather than the fierce and skilled competitor that she was.

Ah well … we’ll certainly keep you posted as things unfold.  Meanwhile, HollyCornblog is heading back up to the lake today, leaving off her homebrewing activities for a couple of days  and (hopefully) enjoying some good sailing weather before heading back to work. While you relax, HollyCornblog (and IF you have your computer with you) please peruse Princess Sparkle Pony’s Photo Blog … it never disappoints!

Robin Roberts Talks to Elizabeth Edwards … and More USWNT Olympic Roster News and Analysis

Here’s just a quick piece from The Huffington Post, highlighting a Robin Roberts interview with Elizabeth Edwards about her commitment to work with the Obama team – especially focusing on health care issues. Meanwhile Charlie Black’s disturbing statement quoted in Fortune Magazine has raised lots of eyebrows. I’ve linked to the Fortune article here. Check out the chart regarding the tax impact of the candidates’ two plans … as a nice illustration of the Fortune Magazine demographic!

Hucles, Buehler and RamponeMoving to less controversial fare, I’ve been monitoring news, analysis and human interest responses to Pia’s roster announcement yesterday. As you might expect, there are a number of articles focusing on the (now ancient) goalie controversy and it’s impact (apparently not) on the selection process. As well, there are lots of stories from around the country about local players who have attained the heights of US women’s soccer with their selection to this team. Here’s a sampling – in no particular order: Continue reading

The Roster

Okay – it’s up! Here’s the 18-woman USWNT Roster for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. No big surprises, as far as I can tell. Aly Wagner played herself back into the mix after a long, injury-ridden hiatus – and it would be awesome to see her fulfill her potential on the Olympic stage this usmmer. Meanwhile Natahsa Kai is the first soccer standout from Hawaii to represent the US at the Olympics. And I might add that Pia’s picks are debuting to pretty much unanimous praise on BigSoccer. No easy feat, IMHO!

PS  Check out the video introducing the team … on the right, just next to the article on the USSF site (link above).

While You're Waiting for the USWNT Olympic Roster … some of you, that is!

Waiting for the USWNT roster to go up?  Well, while you wait, here’s some video to check out.  Looks like it’s the USWNT-vs Canada, as well as part of the Italy game.  First up – the second half of the USWNT vs. Canada …

Misty Monday

Phew – I’m late getting to it this morning – and pretty low on energy and inspiration, I’m afraid. It’s one of those days when cleaning the kitchen and the bathrooms is close to the apex of my ambition.

I’ve got some match quotes from the USWNT … and the reminder that later today Pia will be naming her roster for the Olympics.

I paid a weekend visit to a good friend in Cambridge and her family, where I managed to not humiliate myself in Scrabble (although I still lost) … and had a good time hanging out and catching up. Meanwhile, ChristopherCornblog returned yesterday from a visit with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew. Here’s a Continue reading

Fist Bumps on The View!

I loved coming upon this piece (and video clip) about Michelle Obama’s appearance on “The View.” Yes, greet her properly, please!  Meanwhile, Cindy McCain was kinda critical of the original move, form what I heard somewhere (overly vague, I realize).  Still, having googled her name and the word “drugs” I gotta say that if she said anything at all derogatory about Michelle,  it’s the usual hypocritical, holier-than-thou Republican bullshit, from what I can tell.  It gets very, very tiresome, doesn’t it?

Winning Another One for "Aunt Pia"

The USWNT defeated Canada 1-0 just a few hours ago, to become Peace Queen Cup champs for the second time on a goal Angela Hucles! Hucles also won the golden ball as the tournament MVP! Here’s the write-up from USSoccer.

Aunt PiaThe “Aunt Pia” part comes from a recent entry in the WNT Blog, in which Rylie Rampone is lobbying (along with most of the adults in the vicinity) for an ice cream stop after practice. HollyCornblog would vehemently disagree, no doubt, but personally, I’d LOVE to have an Aunt Pia!

Meanwhile, according to NBC Olympics, Pia will be naming her Olympic roster on Monday the 23rd. Of the current 22 players, she’ll be selecting 18 for the roster, with 2 alternates.  (I don’t know about you, but hearing that I can feel myself flashing back uncomfortably to crowds of girls in junior high school locker rooms, trying to see if their names are on the cut list just tacked up on the bulletin board!)

Something rather odd happened with my blog over the past 24 hours … Continue reading

War Funding Passes (Again) and Obama Fights the Smears

Big thanks to Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes, New Hampshire’s two reps, for voting against more funding for the US occupation of Iraq. The bill passed and will be signed by Bush, but your votes are appreciated nonetheless.

From a war started and fueled by misinformation, we move to a Republican campaign similarly powered. When you don’t have a whole lot to recommend you, it’s easy to just fall into smearing the other guy. And McCain doesn’t actually have to stoop to doing it himself. He can just stand by quietly while others dirty their hands for him … there are plenty of racist tools out there ready to have at it.

Unfortunately, this means that the Obama campaign must devote time, effort, and money to debunking the smears. Actual, meaningful issues aren’t debated, in this debased politics. Instead, viral lies must be constantly identified and extinguished like small, destructive brush fires … because ignoring them, as John Kerry attempted to do four years ago, didn’t seem to work.

However, fighting the smears can be a fine line to walk, too – as reflected in the incident with the Muslim women who were not permitted to stand behind Obama at a rally. He apologized, but the whole flap is petty and off kilter … and some of the comments appended to the post just cited are very scary.

What fertile ground America presents … for fear mongering … for small-minded lies! After eight years of divisiveness, exploitation of ignorance and prejudice, and generally dumbed down politics, I guess it should come as no surprise … but it’s discouraging, nonetheless.  Dubya and his cronies have used the bully pulpit just like … bullies.

As an antidote, the plain and simple truth isn’t necessarily going to work, either. No – unfortunately, as noted in this piece in Salon, just how the truth is presented may have a huge impact. If the smear is listed before the debunking fact, the smear may still be more readily retained and repeated. Apparently people can’t be bothered to read, assimilate, and remember facts. The oft-repeated lie is more likely to stick than the truth … a reality that we have seen play out with tragic consequences over the past nearly-eight years.

As discouraging as it is that people actually believe this stuff … I find it even more damning and despicable that those who know better continue to fuel and exploit fears and narrow hatreds, in the service of power and greed.

USWNT to Peace Queen Cup Final!

Abby - From the Orlando SentinelOn the strength of two goals by Abby Wambach, the USWNT defeated Italy 2-0 in what sounded (on MatchTracker) like a good effort by the US women. They will face Canada in the final.

Kick-off is on June 21 at 2PM local … that’s 1AM (ET), folks! I’ll add links to this post, as more information becomes available on the web! For now, you can go to USsoccer and read the PBP on MatchTracker if you’re desperate!  (And here’s a little pre-game commentary from the USWNT Blog.)

UPDATE:  The game write-up has now been posted on USsoccer.  (Still waiting for the Post-Match Quotes, though.)

… and here they are!
