All I'm Saying Is …

… I really don’t trust ’em. Know what I mean?

Offshore Oil RigWhat am I talking about? It’s the push by Bush to lift the 27-year-old ban on offshore drilling that was imposed by his Daddy all those many years ago. Dubya says that this is the way we need to go to bring down high gasoline prices that otherwise seem uncontrollable. He seems to imply that we should trust him … just like we trusted him about WMD and the need to go attack Iraq. Get my drift?

Reading about the absolutely desperate need to start offshore drilling NOW … Continue reading

June Moon Looms

Tonight’s full moon will look unusually large. Apparently that is a big fat moon illusion – and one that is particularly pronounced in June. Speaking of June and moons … what was that movie with Cher that had the word moon in the title? Anybody know? Maybe it’ll come to me …

In the meantime, I’ll get on with the rest of the news. For starters … 131-92 … WOW! You know what I’m saying? Sorry Kobe … it’s spelled T-E-A-M! Meanwhile, the Phillies’ bats went dead last night and the Sox prevailed 3-0.) Angela Hucles was named Continue reading

USWNT Commentary from USSF

Finally!

clipped from www.ussoccer.com
The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Brazil, 1-0, on a 41st minute goal from forward Amy Rodriguez in a scrappy encounter at the 2008 Peace Queen Cup, giving the USA control of Group B and taking a major step toward a berth in the tournament’s championship game. Read on …

  • And check out the USWNT Blog for an update on Carli’s nose … and other USWNT news post-Brazil!
  • And props to Angela Hucles, of whom Pia said … “This is the best I’ve seen her play. She really stood up when Carli Lloyd had to go out of the game, so it’s really important knowing that you can trust your teammates.” Way to go Angela!

USWNT Play-by-Play

Still waiting for the write-up – but if you click on the MatchTracker logo at ussoccer you can at least get the play-by-play. MatchTracker should show the PBP for awhile … maybe ’til the next game if we’re lucky!

6PM Update – Looks like MatchTracker has moved on to other fare.  The match write-up has been posted, with stats and such – and the link will take you to it.

USWNT Beats Brazil and Tuesday is Off to a Flying Start

Unfortunately, USSF is not exactly being forthcoming on news of the USWNT vs. Brazil game. What I’ve been able to cobble together is that the USWNT won 1-0. The goal was scored by A-Rod. Abby played an awesome game … as did Boxx (based on some of the comments I read on BigSoccer). It sounds like Lloyd left the game early … and Rampone got hurt (don’t know how seriously). Brazil was without Marta and Christiane (both playing in Europe) … so we might not want to get too excited about this result. I’ll post any further information, as it becomes available .. and apologize prophylactically if anything I’ve shared here is incorrect! Meanwhile, here’s Continue reading

Catching Up

I’m doing some catching up here this morning, so bear with me.

Barack Obama gave a great Father’s Day speech … and here’s Naomi Klein with an important piece questioning where he’s headed with his economic policies.

The USWNT came away from their first match of the Peace Queen Cup with a 2-1 win over Australia on the strength of goals by Natasha Kai and Abby Wambach. From what I read in the match report and the post-game quotes, it sounds like the back line (Mitts, Rampone, Markgraf and Chalupney) is starting to gel, which sounds very good to me!

Next up for the US is Brazil – at 1AM (ET) on the 17th. Hmmmm.

Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright …Tiger Woods birdied on the 18th and forced a play-off in the US Open today … gimpy leg and all. Looks to me like Rocco Mediate has his work cut out for him today.

The Phillies start a series vs. the Red Sox today … in Philly … and as prep, here’s a heartwarming piece by Mike Schmidt about the new “Charlie Hustle.” (It’s about Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and his benching of Jimmy Rollins for not hustling …) Guess “Manny being Manny” wouldn’t cut it in Charlie’s house.

And HollyCornblog is heading home from the lake today … with lots of new beer recipes to start fermenting!

Olympic Webcasts Available

Okay – maybe this is a little premature, but if you’ve been worried about being able to catch the USWNT games during the Olympics … it looks like there’s actually no need to be overly concerned. Every single competition in Beijing is going to be webcast (and archived) – so you can watch them Live or later, at your convenience. You’ll have to download Microsoft’s Silverlight in order to watch. It’s easy. Just click on one of the videos on the NBC Olympic site (here’s the soccer page) and you’ll be the opportunity to download.

Sounds like a plan!

Missing Smarty

Smarty JonesI don’t know about you, but in all the Big Brown hoopla, I often found myself missing Smarty Jones and wondering what had become of him. The Philly Phenom hit the world stage after winning the Kentucky Derby in 2004 … and went on to capture the hearts of many (myself very much included). He lives at Three Chimneys Farm now … a cushy gig for a horse with a hard luck start.

Linda Hanna has written what looks to be a very interesting book titled Barbaro, Smarty Jones, and Ruffian: The People’s Horses, focusing on (as you might guess) Barbaro, Smarty Jones, and Ruffian! It sounds like it takes these great horses as a starting point, and goes on to explicate and examine racing … and salient issues raised by these thoroughbreds’ lives.

If I were going to read a book about racing (which I’m not saying I am, mind you) … this would be the one. In the meantime, here’s the website, as well as the Amazon info.)

I will restrain myself for the moment … but Bookeaters, watch out!

McCain Family Values

I’ve learned a teensy bit about credit card debt through the years … but this report is just beyond  amazing to me.  How does one amass that kind of debt?  Why pay the interest, for goodness sake?  Is this how he is likely to manage our economy?

An itemized list would tell us a lot about the McCain’s family values.  It should be required, dontcha think?

Stay tuned for more on this fascinating, unfolding story.

Kai Flies High!

Kai Pushing Hard! This is an awesome article about the new firebrand on the soccer block … Natasha Kai. After a rocky start, Pia is pleased … and when Pia’s pleased, I do believe that we all are.

(All of us, that is, with the exception of HollyCornblog, of course … who is going to have a very tough month of August … if she doesn’t get over this competitiveness with Pia before the Oly’s get underway!)

Meanwhile – it looks like the USWNT vs Australia match (first one for the US in the Peace Queen Cup) will be taking place at 1AM (ET) on 6/15. Here’s the schedule:

Date Opponent Kickoff / ET
June 15 USA vs. Australia 2 p.m. / 1 a.m.
June 17 USA vs. Brazil 2 p.m. / 1 a.m.
June 19 USA vs. Italy 5 p.m. / 4 a.m.

I don’t know whether the game will be on MatchTracker or not … but check out an earlier post, where there was info about possible video feeds.
