Saturday the 14th!

Happy Saturday! You’ll be pleased to know that HollyCornblog survived Friday the 13th and didn’t run into any guys in hockey masks!

And wow – may I just say that it appears that the Phillies’ bats have come alive? The NL-East leading Phils posted a 20-2 win in St Louis, helped along by back-to-back-to-back homers by Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Pat Burrell. Next up after St. Louis? The Red Sox! (That means three games will be televised here in NH … and there will be mild strife in THIS household!)

You can get Peace Queen Cup Video on Pandora TV. I’m hooked up to South Korea vs. New Zealand right now and the quality is excellent (when my signal is strong enough)!

Meanwhile, some Dems in Tennessee appear to have lost it … as infectious GOPitis (that pesky Obama-as-Terrorist strain) has spread into the party’s executive committee. Hopefully sanity will be restored before too long – but in the meantime – what are people thinking? Michelle Obama has become the target of dastardly attacks … and it’s just all so mean-spirited and bizarre. But this is who we are … I guess.

And a moment, to acknowledge the sudden passing of Tim Russert. What a shock – and a loss n the world of journalism. I was not a regular MTP-watcher, but his voice and perspective have certainly been a huge part of the political landscape over the past 15-plus years. Very sad.
I’m heading out now and will be gone for the weekend. JordanCornblog will continue to publish. WordPress has this cool capacity to queue things up for future publication … so don’t wander too far away! Have a great weekend … and go USWNT!

Mitts Tidbits … and Other Lunchtime Fare

Heather MittsCincinnati’s own Heather Mitts is recovering well from her last injury, and looks to be on track for an Olympic Roster slot. The recently-turned-30 defender has had some PTSD, according to her hometown paper The Enquirer, as USWNT mates Leslie Osborne and Cat Whitehill have gone down with similar injuries in recent weeks.

While we’re talking diagnoses, how about OCD (as in Obsessive Clinton Disorder). That’s the new DSM category that the writer of this great Maureen Dowd riposte has pinned on the OpEd Diva. This ain’t a new piece … but if you haven’t seen it, it’s a tasty morsel for all those Dowd denunciators out there!  (CB … this one’s for you … on this momentous occasion!)

Which One Doesn’t Belong? Finally, this photo, taken during Laura Bush’s strange trip to Afghanistan, is just too bizarre for words. I tend to agree with those who suspect that the FLOTUS is heavily medicated. This picture would seem to support that notion.

Uh Oh! It's Friday the 13th and HollyCornblog is at Crystal Lake!

Friday the 13thWatch out for guys in hockey masks … is all I can say!

As for other news … hmmm … I may be just too nervous to come up with any. It’s gonna be a LONG day!

However, I must note that our Bush-whacked Supreme Court came through with a 5-4 vote upholding Habeas Corpus … yes, even under Bush … and even at Gitmo.

Also, look for John Cusak’s War, Inc. in theaters … it sounds like an on-the-money, satirical look at our current debacle in Iraq. Says Arianna Huffington in her recent post:

Cusack’s righteous rage over the billions being pocketed in Iraq by companies like Blackwater, Halliburton, and Bechtel is the beating heart of his brilliant War Inc. The film, a corrosive, audaciously funny takedown of the Right’s push toward privatized war, has become a surprise, grassroots-driven hit — despite having almost no ad money behind it.

Finally, we learn that, as a Republican ploy, emasculation gets the insecure white guys every time!

Be careful out there, HollyCornblog!

More on Cat's ACL – and Then Something Light for Your Lunchtime Enjoyment

Here’s an article from Cat Whitehill’s hometown newspaper, in which her dad seems to speculate about the relationship between hard training and her ACL tear. Pia has definitely had the team training hard – and Cat had been playing catch-up, as she came in a bit behind the eight ball on the fitness front. I am sure that at this level the effects of the stresses and strains of training are closely monitored … but with Osborne having gone down just 19 days previous to Cat, this is concerning. If nothing else, it certainly depletes the depth of the player pool!

Stephanie Cox and CrewMeanwhile, Stephanie Cox (far right) has arrived in South Korea and was able to join her USWNT buddies at the Hard Rock Cafe for some victuals!  And on an even lighter note … you MUST watch the video embedded in this post on the USWNT Blog.

JordanCornblog was Attacked …

… this morning … by a wild turkey!  Yes, it’s true.  While walking down the driveway to get the paper with Willie, he innocently stumbled upon the wild turkey nest in our field.  We’d all been wondering where it was.  Now we know.

Unhappily, he and I then somehow ended up caught between mama turkey and her chicks.  Let me tell you, that’s not a good place to be.

Needless to say, had you been here, you’d have been treated to the sight of a 55 year old woman (in orange crocs, no less) sprinting down the driveway with a panicked black lab … and a pissed off turkey in hot pursuit.

Now THAT got my adrenalin going!

In Which I Mention HollyCornblog but NOT Pia (Oops … Guess I Just Did)!

Smarmy Joe Lieberman continues in his role as McCain’s toady, decrying “partisan attacks” after taking part in them so recently himself. Then there’s that whiny voice … the Dems should definitely give him the boot.

And Fox news on Michelle Obama? The graphic is bad enough … but then there’s the expression of disgust on the blond anchor’s pretty little face … ugh! The scary part is that millions of Americans lap that stuff up.

HollyCornblog (to move to a happier topic) has returned from the lake and sent a Continue reading

USWNT News Flash

I just read on the net that Cat Whitehill tore her ACL while training in Korea yesterday for the Peace Queen Cup. This is obviously a huge disappointment for her – particularly so as she had worked so hard to get herself back into shape and to the fitness level that Pia required. Stephanie Cox will be flying to Korea to step in and play for the USWNT in the tournament. She will also again be part of the 22-person Olympic pool from which the 18-player USWNT Olympic roster will be chosen. Such are the vagaries of life, eh?

Going from the sad to the pretty silly … apparently the USWNT is on The Price is Right this Friday. I think I’ll skip the show – the clip was more than enough for me.  😉

Wednesday Randomness

First – in this great find, Boltgirl gives us another glimpse of the GOP candidate’s foreign relations creds. (I ‘m actually starting to wonder if McCain is okay.)

The speculation and curiosity about Obama’s Veep Vetting grows, as does the number of names on his list. Interesting collection … but John Kerry? Really? I think we already did that. And as the Joe Lieberman-backstabbing-Obama story gets clearer and deeper, we learn that Scarlet Johansson’s loyalties are absolutely undivided.

Back to the guy that Joe likes … that McCain guy. Here’s another good piece – this one Continue reading

USWNT Allocation to WPS Coming in July

Looks like, starting in July, we’re going to start hearing some news about where some of the USWNT players will be heading for WPS play next year.  (That’s Women’s Professional Soccer – the new women’s professional league set to start play in the spring of 2009.)  Apparently Marta will be available starting July 1 and has expressed interest in the League, and expansion slots are being divvied up, with Philadelphia having one for 2010 and Atlanta jockeying for another 2010 slot.  Who will land in Boston?  Hmmm.  Will Lil come back?  Markgraf?  Hucles?  That would be our crew from last time.

Fist Bumping Rules!

The Fist Bump Heard ‘Round the WorldWow, did you know that fist-bumping was such an issue in the US of A?

Actually, until last week, I’m not sure I’d have remarked on fist-bumping one way or t’other. And I had no idea that it was a secret signal of Islamo-Fascists or thugs. Here’s one scary comment about it from the web …”It is more evidence of the penetration and corruption of our dominant culture by the minority. There will be a lot more of this if Obama gets into the White House.” (I feel so proud to be an American sometimes that it actually hurts.)

Now this fist bump seems something I’d like to incorporate into my repertoire. Yes, definitely. If only to annoy folks I will thoroughly enjoy annoying.

Oh yes, and meanwhile, it seems that there’s a fair amount of fist-bumping going on in the so-called dominant culture, too.
