Pia in Korea

Pia in KoreaAccording to this brief piece on the Peace Queen Cup site, Pia and the USWNT have arrived in Korea. Tournament play starts on the 14th, and the USWNT has its first match on the 15th. (Note how the flowers kinda match her eyes!)

And just so HollyCornblog doesn’t get jealous at the attention being paid to Pia here, I will note that she (the aforementioned HollyCornblog) is at the lake, having fled the heat. I hope you get a good sailing day up there!

Golf Gear and HollyCornblog Update

According to the Huffington Post this morning (quoting unnamed Republican operatives) the McCain campaign is in deep do-do. This is the kind of story I love to start off with on a too-hot Monday morning! And check out this priceless piece about the Golf Gear that Senator McCain is selling on his website … in a bit of tone deafness that I think of as pretty typical for the GOP. The economy is going down the tubes … and we are peddling golf gear. Nothing against golf, mind you … but wow!

Here’s a nice piece from Politico about this ending for Hillary … with reflections on Al Gore’s somewhat similar passage. And for HollyCornblog aficionado’s, Continue reading

Hillary Hits a Home Run

It certainly sounds like Hillary’s concession speech hit all the right notes. Here’s her speech in its entirety. Nice job, Hillary. It put me in mind of Al Gore’s concession speech in 2000 – although (thank goodness) Hillary’s is conceding to Obama, not Bush! Gore’s speech was one of the most uplifting I’ve ever heard … and a sad, sad day for this country.

While we’re on a roll, here’s Kerry’s concession in 2004 (I’m guessing this won’t get many hits) and the beginning of Teddy Kennedy’s concession speech (at the Democratic Convention) in 1980. (The rest of this speech can be found on You-Tube, too.)

And finally, here is Bobby Kennedy, announcing the killing of Dr. Martin Luther King.  Contrast the authenticity of this speech with the stupidity of the past 8 years.  It is stark and sad … how much ground we have lost, in terms of the quality of our leadership and the level of our national dialogue.

John, Even and Paula … Randomly Speaking

I’m cherry-picking this morning. (What I really want to do is go back to bed …)

Here’s some great video and commentary re. John McCain’s speech on Tuesday night (mercifully just clips … not the whole danged thing). I really do wonder if there’s something wrong with McCain. Perhaps his pandering and cozying up to Bush has led to some sort of infection.

In soccer news, I read that Even Pellerud is retiring as the Canadian women’s national soccer team’s coach after the 2008 Olympics. For many, this news is welcome, apparently, but a little late. Wonder who they’ll get to replace him. Not Greg Ryan, I hope. That would be a terrible thing for Canada (although a boon for Michigan, I’d say.)

Last night I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours being entertained by Paula Poundstone … an experience I would highly recommend to everyone!

Politics, Soccer and HollyCornblog … Pretty Much Everything Today!

Hmmmm, how about Jim Webb and Obama as the ticket in November? (And I don’t mean Mr. MacArthur Park … although back in the ’70’s I’d have loved the idea … I admit … with eyes slightly downcast.) Anyway, it’s fascinating, this VP dance that we’re all watching now.

I was listening to some very interesting commentary on NHPR yesterday. (Seemed every time I was in the car, this was being discussed.) One commentator noted that, if Hillary is publicly pushing for the spot it’s tough for Barack to pick her without appearing to be caving in to pressure. That made sense to me … and perhaps to her as well … as it seems she’s backed off a bit since then. And of course, there’s the little matter of Bill, as well – and the question of whether Hillary would/could be a loyal side-kick.

Moving into a much broader context, forty years ago yesterday, Bobby Kennedy was shot after a big win in the California primary. With that shocking death, Robert S. McElvaine posits, Continue reading

HollyCornblog Hits the Road Again

The peripatetic HollyCornblog and Charlie HopBrew are heading down the coast to Philly today and hope to stop at Capone’s Restaurant in Norristown … by all accounts a mecca for aficionados! They’re taking their growler (as well as their dog, ZoeyCornblog-HopBrew) so that they can snag a hefty sample of something they find particularly tasty! HollyCornblog also promises a picture or two … which will be posted here and viewable by all (even those who prefer Pia)! 😉

More on JordanCornblog's Milieu

Window WorkIn a previous post you saw a photo of JordanCornblog’s desk. (She’s trying to be more open and forthcoming … although writing about herself in the third person appears to still be an issue to be dealt with.)

Here’s a quick look at work that’s underway on the big front window in JordanCornblog-land. (It seems it needed to be replaced.)

It’s proving to be a major undertaking … and one which (thankfully) wasn’t necessary in the middle of a New Hampshire winter!

Obama Corners Lieberman – Love It!

JordanCornblog FactoryJoe Lieberman, that guy who ran with Al Gore (remember) persists on his path toward perdition (IMHO). As Joe continues to carry water for McCain, it’s nice to read this piece on the Huffington Post about Obama cornering him and giving him what for. And if you had doubts about Senator Obama’s ability to be tough with bad-actors, I think this episode with the little man from Connecticut should be reassuring. (Personally, I just love the image of Obama towering over that smarmy and self-righteous dude.)

And while the vice presidential slot remains an open question in both parties, the GOP is making hay off of Hillary and Bill’s attacks on Obama during the Primary. I really shudder to think how ugly this is going to get.

The Viral Weirdness Continues … and Grows

Even before Barack Obama had clinched the nomination, the crazy e-mails were circulating. They are like a virus infecting the body politic. How people fall for this stuff is beyond me. Below is a friend’s response to one such hateful and deluded e-mail … with the actual, original e-mail following at the bottom of the post.

Thank you, Stephen, for taking the time to research and rebut the vitriol. It’s going to get ugly – and we all need to be prepared to respond with facts and sanity. Read on … Continue reading

It's Obama … and Other News (Including Peace Queen Roster)

Barack Obama (in case you hadn’t heard) clinched the nomination last night and acknowledged it with a speech to his supporters. Meanwhile, Hillary, in NY, spoke to her stalwarts and laid the groundwork for her exit. In a bizarre and self-destructive juxtaposition, McCain also gave a speech. My goodness … he’d look bad all on his own, but to put himself out there last night showed poor judgment or delusional thinking … or both.

HollyCornblog is heading to Philly this weekend and hoping to check out a couple of brewpubs down there … Continue reading
