More on Haiti

Sorry for the quick hit, I know I’ve been bad about guest blogging here (I’ll try to do better!) but my father sent me this link today, and I didn’t see it anywhere here yet… this is worth watching, I think.

Okay, so …

… in answer to Nourishing Words, we wuv our wovel.  Weawwy!

Yesterday’s storm gave us an opportunity to test it out nicely, and it outperformed the shovel decisively (except in really small areas, where the shovel was the obvious implement of choice).

For clearing paths, cleaning the walkway to the house, or cleaning up the edges of the driveway (shown here in the strong and sure hands of Ms. JBD) it was much faster and easier to use than the shovel.

We don’t have a snow blower, so we couldn’t make a comparison there … but it’s hard to imagine that it’d have been a lot faster.  And the noise and fumes would be a huge down-side.

The other lesson that JordanCornblog learned yesterday was NOT TO GO OUT IN THE SNOW IN BIRKENSTOCKS!

I wandered out (after woveling) to take a picture of one of the woveled walkways … and promptly landed on my keister (thanks for the spelling consult, Beeg).  Happily, no one saw … and the only damage was maybe a bruise or two … and a snow-covered back.

This photo was taken just seconds before I wnet down.

Guess my bone density is okay, eh?  😉

Other news?  We watched UConn slaughter Duke last night (after Duke gave ’em a good battle in the first half).  They are just scary good.

Today’s the anniversary of Ann Murphy Cornog’s death … 1/19/75 – so 35 years.  That’s a long time – and like yesterday.

RIP, Mom … RIP.

Winter Wonderland

As the snow continues to fall, I’m ecstatic that there’s an opportunity to use the Wovel today.  (I’ll be sure to post some pictures.)

Meanwhile … I am also ecstatic that the ‘boys were handed a more ignominious defeat than what they gave the Eagles.  It’s petty, I know. 😉

And for your viewing pleasure (while I wovel) … check out Jon Stewart’s commentary on the Beck/Palin Interview last week.

Right on!

Soccer, for a Moment, Takes the Mind

If you go to the site of any WPS team these days you’re likely to see a counter displaying the days, hours, and minutes before opening day. We’re something like three months away, with a bit of March Madness in between, but with the days getting longer, you can definitely feel the soccer in the air!

The WPS draft took place this past Friday, and the Breakers seem to have done quite well for themselves, with two picks in the first round.  Meanwhile, as it was more or less business as usual for the Breakers, the LA Sol are going through a major shake-up … with Abner Rogers leaving as coach and the sale of the team.  Check out the comments that go along with the linked article.  Overall, it sounds like the shake-up may be good for the team and for WPS.

Anyway – back to the Breakers.  They went for Lauren Cheney first (pick number two), and then Alyssa Naeher(with the 11th pick in round one). Hopefully Cheney will give them some scoring punch up top, and Naeher, a standout in goal for the Penn State Nittany Lions, will be a great addition between the pipes.  Both Ali Lipsher and Kristin Luckenbill did good work for the Breakers in the 2009 season, but Naeher could add some heft — and certainly some strong competition — in that very important position.

Oh, and I sure hope that whatever happened between A-Rod and Tony doesn’t repeat itself in 2010!

Tobin Heath was taken with the number one pick, by the expansion Atlanta Beat. Can’t wait to see her in person when the Beat come to Boston.

Here’s the breakdown on everyone that the Breakers picked. It’ll be fun to watch BC and BU play together on the Harvard pitch!

Meanwhile, the Chicago Red Stars made a puzzling move (to my mind) when they started off draft day by trading Lindsay Tarpley to the Athletica.  Meanwhile, it looks to me like the Athletica did very well for themselves … getting Tarpley and replacing their back-up goalie (like they NEED one) with the UNC keeper, Ashlyn Harris.

In other sporting “stuff” I am very much looking forward to watching the Vikings send the Cowboys home with their tails between their legs. While rooting for the too-oft-retired Bret Favre is not exactly my favorite thing, I will do it in the service of avenging the Eagles!

And for your Sunday viewing pleasure, check out this old Monty Python bit of craziness – one of my all time favorites!  (I picked it up in Todd Civin’s interview with the Breakers’ Alex Scott (also worth a look):

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE

Here’s a piece from the chat with Alex (a very interesting/witty woman – not to mention a wonderful player):

Civ: Give us three words in “English” that amused your US teammates.

AS: Oh my God. I really could not give you three words. I think my teammates find my whole vocabulary quite amusing. I can not think for the love of me why. Either that I speak too fast, either that I am very Cockney or they just have no clue what I am chatting about half the time. I think this last one applies to Lil (Kristine Lilly). Kelly Smith translates for Lil when it comes to my speech.

Molly Hightower, Ryan Kloos … RIP

I was so saddened to read, last night, that Molly Hightower was killed in the Haitian earthquake, along with Ryan Kloos, the brother of Erin Kloos, another volunteer with Friends of the Orphans in Haiti.

I can only imagine what it took for her family to put up yesterday’s post on Molly’s blog … for both families to breathe and put one foot in front of the other … for all the hundreds and thousands of families touched by this tragedy to go on and do what each day requires in their wrenched and wrenching worlds.

Molly Hightower’s family wrote:

Molly is no longer able to add to her blog, her body was recovered from the wreckage of the Fr. Wasson Center in Petion-Ville, Haiti following the January 12th earthquake.

Molly’s family is very proud of what she has done in her 22 years on this earth and hope that you will learn from Molly’s writings what drove her to leave a life full of family, friends, hot water, clean water, plentiful food and peppermint frappuccinos, to a life of cold showers, bug bites, rice and beans everyday, and hot muggy days. Its very simple, THE CHILDREN. In Haiti she found unconditional love, simple pleasures, smiles all day and a second family. And it made her smile.

If you would like to help continue Molly’s dream and journey, please follow the listed link to the Friends of the Orphans web site set up in Molly’s name.

Posted by her loving and extremely sad family, both of them.

Here is information about the organization (Friends of the Orphans) that she and Erin Kloos worked for … along with updates on other American volunteers there.

It is with deep anguish that Friends of the Orphans is confirming the deaths in Haiti of international volunteer Molly Hightower, 22, of Port Orchard, WA, and Ryan Kloos, 24, of Phoenix, AZ, who is the brother of Friends of the Orphans international volunteer Erin Kloos, 26, also of Phoenix. Ryan Kloos, a 2008 graduate of the University of California-San Diego, was recovered from the Fr. Wasson Center in Petionville on the afternoon of January 13. Erin Kloos was rescued from the Fr. Wasson Center on January 13 and is currently in stable condition in a south Florida hospital’s intensive care unit. Her prognosis is good. After an extensive search, Molly’s body was recovered from the same location at approximately 4:30 a.m. (EST) Friday, January 15.

As the Haitian tragedy unfolds, many relief agencies are asking for help in getting aid to the desperate populace there.

Doctors Without Borders is where I put my money … for now.

Yikes!

Where did the time go?

This is one of those mornings when I wonder whether it’s better to post something or just remain silent.  I can’t do even a smidgeon of justice to the situation in Haiti, which is tragic beyond comprehension.  I am glad that Obama seems to be responding with swiftness and meaningful support … and without hesitation.  It is such a relief to have him at the helm at a time like this – and I am absolutely sure that he will get tons of crap from the right and the racists and the haters.

So be it.

I was reading last night about a young woman – Molly Hightower – a 22 year old young woman who was working in Haiti and is, as far as I know this morning, still missing.  Her blog, 525,600 Minutes brought me up short last night, striking so close to home as to take my breath away.  Life’s vagaries.  I hope that she will be somehow miraculously found safe …

On an entirely different note – so different that I almost hesitate to bring it up … the WPS draft is today.

Oh, and you can follow it on Twitter

Pat Robertson is a Douchebag

Pat Robertson is a Douchebag.

Pat Robertson is a Douchebag.

Pat Robertson is a Douchebag.

I continue to enjoy my auto hotkey program and put it to good use, as you can see.

For further information about why Pat has replaced Dick, watch the video AMR posted below.  Pat is a sick, sick man.  Why is he given a platform to speak from?  And why/how could anyone in her right mind ever say, “Absolutely, Pat.”

Good God, y’all!

Pat Robertson is a Douchebag.

Time and Place

I think that the eternal question about what one’s thought pattern must be when making completely inappropriate statements and/or displaying appalling behavior is best left unanswered. I highly doubt the majority of us would be able to comprehend their logic as words of hate about our fellow man fly freely from their mouths.

One must ask, how does talk like this make us any different than the “evil terrorists” who want to see US citizens dead? I can’t say that it does.  Organized religion, when left in the wrong hands, can breed such excessive amounts of hate.

Pat Robertson talks about Haitians pact with the devil:

May the people of Haiti find the strength and hope they need as they work to rebuild their lives and their country.

Horror in Haiti

Other news pales this morning, in light of the horror and devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.  As the sun rises over the frigid NH horizon, my thoughts turn to the streets of Port-au-Prince where people already in dire straits are awakening to chaos and unfathomable loss.

It is difficult to wrap one’s head around the scope of a tragedy like this … or any loss – the singular or the multitudinous.

The sun continues its rise, no matter what … life goes on.

Moments pass and the hearts that are left here continue to beat …

The fundamental mysteries continue to confound … just as they always have.

Dick Cheney is a Douchebag.

… still practicing with my HotKeys.

DICK CHENEY IS A DOUCHEBAG.  Dick Cheney is a douchebag.  Dick Cheney is a douchebag.

You should definitely give this tool a try – I find it very helpful (not to mention uplifting).

Of course, I also realize that, with overuse, it could become limiting and even, perhaps boring.

You’ll let me know if that happens, right?

Dick Cheney is a douchebag.
