OMG

Cliff Lee is back in Philly … so THAT’s who the mystery team was.  It had crossed my mind … but hadn’t dared to hope … just seemed too outlandish.

But there it is … one year to the day after he was traded to Seattle, he’s back.

What a rotation this is going to be … with Cole Hamels (who could be a #1 on lots of teams) maybe slotted at #3 or #4.  Are you kidding me???

I am thoroughly fascinated that Lee gave up so much money, along with a couple of years on his contract, to be in Phillies’ red again.  Hope more details emerge today about that why’s and wherefores.

Meanwhile … Phillies-Red Sox Series in 2011?  Can’t wait!  😉

How Much Do You Know About Flash Events and Flash Mobs?

A friend sent me a link last night that had me lost for a chunk of time … looking at flash events (like the Philadelphia Opera Company’s offerings of Random Acts of Culture), and flash mobs (similar but more spontaneous … and apparently taking a violent turn in Philly).  Interesting phenomenon to say the least.

Here are two flash events … one at the old Wanamakers (check out that eagle and those 650 singers) … and the other at the Reading Terminal Market (CB’s old stomping ground):

Here’s what wikipedia has to say about flash mobs … and here’s a collection of other (older) videos … and an article from the NY Times about the Philly violence.

Gotta go get some work done here … and fill the bathtub with water in preparation for our potential loss of power later today.  (Ah, New England weather.)

Go Pats … Go Eagles … and go have a great day!

In case you were wondering …

… it’s DAMN cold here in NH!

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, gotta let you know that WPS has finalized its 2011 schedule … reducing the number of matches to 18 and taking a break in deference to the Women’s World Cup.  (The World Cup runs from June 26-July 17 … so you might want to pop that into your calendars now!)  The WPS teams be in action from April to August, with each team having 9 home and 9 away matches.

Here’s schedule and attendance data from 2010 … from the WPS site … Boston doing quite well, as is their habit!  Personally, I’m hoping for lots of Sunday afternoon games in 2011 … fingers crossed!

And speaking of the Breakers, I see that they have acquired Kelley O’Hara and Nikki Washington … both first round picks in previous years … and both very nice acquisitions!

Finally, the Western NY Flash are gearing up … and looking good (how can you not, with Christine Sinclair up top?!).  Too bad Abby can’t join her and play for the hometown crowd!

Oh No Mo!

Sorry, there, Rays’ fans … I see that Carl C is coming to Beantown – and will apparently be in the area for a looonnnggg time, contributing to the local economy.

Are the Rays gonna contend in 2011?

Are the Sox gonna have enough heft to move the Yankees aside?

Stay tuned … and while you wait, catch the UNH Wildcats vs the Blue Hens at 8PM Friday night.  (It’s football, Alice … you’ll want to see a movie!)

😉

Well …

A friend yesterday shared with me Newsweek’s “Power 50” list of the top 50 most influential political figures in the US, based on their earnings.  It’s old news, I know … and quite inspiring, if you like a good dose of fear and embarrassment with your inspiration.  The fact that ‘pundit’ number 6 is even on there is .. well … I don’t know.

In other old news of note … we’re catching up here … the Breakers have acquired Rachel Buehler … who’s not been inspiring a lot of confidence for me with her USWNT play.  But perhaps Tony sees something I haven’t.

Pia has been named a finalist for Women’s Soccer Coach of the year … and among her competition for the honor is a former player of hers from her Breakers’ year … Maren Meinert (Germany U-20 Coach).

And speaking of the USWNT … this is  REALLY old news … but they have drawn Korea DPR, Colombia and Sweden in Group C at the 2011 World Cup.

And while we’re on the subject of sports … Jayson Werth will be facing the Phillies as a National in 2011.  Nice deal, buddy!

And finally, ending on the happiest of happy notes … HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RPE!

Dick

Wow, a friend just turned me on to a recent news item about Nigeria charging former VP Dick with bribery. Thanks, Doris!

This all relates to some shenanigans that took place back when Dick was being a Dick at Halliburton (as opposed to when he was being a Dick at the White House, just to be clear).

I am sure that with their millions and millions of ill-gotten gains all of the culprits will be able to get off the hook one way or another. However, I do enjoy the thought that this is another of the many dastardly activities that will tarnish Dick’s “legacy” – and also may put somewhat of a damper on his holiday celebrations.  How the righteous have fallen!

I am trying to be more generally positive in my life and to cut back on the time that I spend wishing for and savoring others’ misfortunes; however, in this case (and a few others that spring to mind) I will happily continue in my more Grinch like mode.

When I have more time, I’ll aim to catch you up on news of the Breakers, the USWNT, and of the Women’s World Cup. I’m having a real hard time figuring out how the scheduling is going to work this spring/summer. Will keep you posted!

Check It Out …

Got a pet?  Looking for a vet?

Here’s the clinic that Ruby recommends … Suncook River Vet.

Asked about her recent visit there, she said, “It wasn’t so bad.”

Unusually taciturn for Ruby, I admit.

Most likely that’s because she continues to be in some discomfort from a torn ACL (the immediate reason for her visit).

But, now that it’s being treated, you can see her perking up.  In fact, we questioned her again after her morning dose of Glucosamine and Chondroitin and she was slightly more expansive, noting that, “I got a treat at the end.”

We will keep you posted, in case Ruby has any further comments … and in the meantime, we recommend that you check this place out, for sure … and visit them on their page over on Facebook!

Back at It

First off, this windowsill photo is from HollyCornblog for Boltgirl … commemorating an epic loss to Wannabees on the Fantasy Gridiron.

All good things, as they say, must come to an end.  As it is with winning streaks, so it is with vacations.  (And, so it seems, with WordPress themes, too.  I just updated mine, and lost all the photos I had loaded.  So, for those who notice such things, I’ve returned to an older theme, and may try to reinstate my previous one this weekend if I have time.)

Anyway, I feel very appreciative of my time off .. and of the reality that, unlike so many, I have that thing called a job, and the total luxury of lamenting the fact that I have to return to it.

And, truth be told, the lament is a mild one.  I like my job … the people I work with, the work I do … all of it.  But I also do very much like having time to be more fluid with my day … and yeah, I have some small regrets about the things I didn’t get done with all that ‘fluidity.’  But basically, it’s all good.

Oh, and capping things off nicely as I scan the news this morning, I see that Brett Favre says he’s “done.”

I’m not … but gotta go! 😉

Sweet Stuff from the Phillies!

Snowy Sunday … Sorta

So, the USWNT defeated Italy and has now qualified, as the 16th team, for the 2011 Women’s World Cup. They qualified on the strength of a goal by A-Rod who followed up on a nice hard shot by Megan Rapinoe. All in all, it wasn’t a very inspiring effort by the US women. As Pia summed it up after the game, the first 20 min. were “crap” – but there were some bright spots in the rest of the match.

I read this morning that the Boston Breakers won’t be picking up Marta. You gotta wonder how the league is going to fare this year, as it contends with a lack of money and the World Cup, and all the scheduling headaches that that is going to create. Sadly, if Boston isn’t going to pick up Marta, I doubt that anyone else will. I managed to miss every one of her appearances in Boston over the past two years, so am guessing that I will have to forgo ever seeing her play live. Oh well …

We managed to access the game via ESPN3.com (thanks very much Eleanor) and were able to watch it through the computer and a VGA cable on the TV screen. Alice joined us, and we finished up as many leftover desserts as we could while watching the Italian and American women run around in frigid Chicago. We were very very happy to learn, in the course of the afternoon, that it takes five Trader Joe’s chocolate truffles to equal one serving!

Then last night it was off to Red River to see “Inside Job.” What an indictment of our financial markets and of the economics departments at our so-called elite universities. The Econ profs came off looking at once evil and idiotic – not an easy thing to pull off, I’m thinking (although Bush manages to do it fairly well).

Today we travel to Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut. It’s a gift for JBD’s birthday – and hopefully the Huskies will continue their winning ways against LSU.

Best get moving here on this beautiful, sunny, snowy Sunday. (There was a rather intense snow squall during the soccer game yesterday afternoon, and now it looks like someone sprinkled confectioners’ sugar across the landscape.)

HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew were at the lake this weekend … while the wind roared and, I’m betting, the lake started freezing in the shallowest coves and crannies.  Hope you’re still cozy this morning!
