Video from HollyCornblog

Happy Tuesday morning.  To start your day, here’s Louis Black on Glen Beck’s Nazi Tourette Syndrome … this is priceless!

Other than that, watch the polls today as the Tea Baggers flex their muscles … hopefully further screwing up the already dazed and confused GOP.

And Brit Hume?  Where’s the oil, Brit asks? I hadn’t realized how far off the deep end he had wandered, had you?

Gotta run … into another beautiful day.  Hope yours is a good one!

Home Again

So nice to come home after a gorgeous weekend with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew.  We got the dock in, stacked wood, managed a tour of a couple of Albany’s interesting beer pubs … and just enjoyed hanging out, walking, working, and being together.

I return home feeling very lucky on all fronts.  So here are some pictures from the weekend …

First off, here’s the dock, up and runing for the 2010 season.  It was a windy day, but actually not too bad in the water (once our legs got numbed up)!

This is HollyCornblog, taking some photos of me while I focus on her!

Sunday morning we took a walk up behind HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew’s house.  They live in the midst of a dairy farm … an amazing spot surrounded by fields planted in hay and corn … with rolling pastures … all backing up to a wooded hill that offers endless nooks and crannies for exploring on foot (or skiis or snowshoes, depending on the season).

Here’s the view, from a field near the top of the hill, looking back toward their house and the surrounding fields and farms.

See what I mean?

And finally, here’s one of HollyCornblog’s creations, nestled in the ferns behind their house.

There’s another one in the woods up at the lake.

And across the road there’s a whole village of castles … built over the years by a neighbor … a most incredible and magical place tucked away behind a non-descript-looking ranch house on a country road in the middle of Upstate NY dairy country.

There are so many things under this sun, eh?

4-3

They didn’t get going ’til after they were down 3-0.  Then they came storming back and won it 4-3.

As HollyCornblog pointed out, the score of game 7 also matched the Flyers’ amazing series comeback.

Well done and on to Montreal!

It’s a beautiful day here in NY … as we get moving toward the “To Do” list … which looks like it’ll include some wood stacking, along with getting the dock in, etc.  Bring it on!

But wait?  What happened to Boltgirl’s eye?  (I leave home and everything changes????)

Off to the Races

I’m off to work … then visiting HollyCornblog and CharlieHopBrew for the weekend.

Hope the rains stay away for the Breakers’ game tonight …and Kelly Smith smacks a few home!  While you’re waiting for the game, here’s the latest NYT Blog post from Sky Blue’s Yael Averbuch … very nice as always!  And here are the WPS Midweek Notes from Women’s Soccer Weekly.  (Yes, I know it’s no longer mid-week!)

Hope the Sox, Flyers and Phillies win … and hope you all have a great weekend.  And good grief, I nearly forgot … hope the Cubbies win another one for Boltgirl.  (They could be starting a streak!)

I may or may not check in over the next couple of days.

Onward!

Oh, and if Facebook privacy settings have you flummoxed … check out this video!

No More DADT … Okay?

US soldiers have created a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell spoof that’s pretty much got it right.  Here’s what will happen when the Army “goes gay.”

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upi2DNRKdyU&feature=player_embedded

And Charlie, Charlie, Charlie .. say it ain’t so!  Phillies stealing signsBill Belichick giving ethical pointers to the Phils?  Nooooooooooooooooo!!

On a happier note, the Flyers have tied their series with the Bruins … and I’ll get to watch game 7 with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew.  Sweet!

The Flyers became just the sixth NHL team to force a Game 7 in a series it trailed 3-0. Only two of those clubs — the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders — finished the trick.

Philadelphia will get its chance to join the exclusive group on Friday night in Boston.

And I see that Pia has named her roster for the USWNT’s upcoming match with Germany … in Cleveland!  The game will be televised on ESPN2 (yippee!!) – 5/22 at 6PM ET.  Of note – Lil is back … as are Christie Rampone and Kate Markgraf.  Here’s the roster as listed on the USSF site.

Wonderful Willie!

Willie is recuperating nicely and seems very happy to be rid of the irritant that had been growing on his eyelid.  (That phrase, or maybe just the word irritant, makes me think, briefly and fleetingly, of an individual about whom I no longer write  … funny.  Take a deep breath, JordanCornblog … you needn’t go there!)

Anyway, Willie was comfortably mellow yesterday evening … the result of the drugs, no doubt.  We thank Dr. Fiona for doing so well by our sweet boy!

On the WPS front, the power rankings for this week continue to reflect badly on the Breakers … who face a tough match-up Friday evening against FC Gold Pride, who lost Camille Abily last week, but continue to shine.

On the amazing details front … who knew that Tina Fey grew up in Upper Darby?  She was born on May 18, 1970 … just as CB and I were getting ready to graduate from neighboring Haverford High School.

Wonder if she ever drove by my house?  😉

Thanks for the info … CB via HollyCornblog!

Finally, I like this take on Change, from The Writer’s Almanac

Change

by Louis Jenkins

All those things that have gone from your life,

moon boots, TV trays and the Soviet Union, that

seem to have vanished, are really only changed.

Dinosaurs did not disappear from the earth but

evolved into birds and crock pots became bread

makers and then the bread makers all went to

rummage sales along with the exercise bikes.

Everything changes. It seems at times (only for

a moment) that your wife, the woman you love,

might actually be your first wife in another form.

It’s a thought not to be pursued….Nothing is the

same as it used to be. Except you, of course,

you haven’t changed…well, slowed down a bit,

perhaps. It’s more difficult nowadays to deal with

the speed of change, disturbing to suddenly find

yourself brushing your teeth with what appears

to be a flashlight. But essentially you are the

same as ever, constant in your instability.

Chilly Tuesday

This bright and chilly morning I’m hoping that not too many folks had their gardens nipped by the frosty night.  Ours look none the worse for wear.

Willie (our black lab) was sadly surprised to have no breakfast this morning.  He’s slated for surgery on a small-but-annoying growth that he’s got on his eyelid.  He’ll be much happier once it’s gone – but just try explaining that to a hungry and joyfully expectant dog first thing in the AM.  The message clearly did not get through and, if it’s possible for Labs to sulk, that’s probably what he’s doing downstairs right now.  (Actually, I don’t think it is possible … he’s just too sweet natured.  Now, Ruby, on the other hand …)  😉

I’m off to visit HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew on Friday.  We’ll (hopefully) get the dock in without freezing (too much) and do other opening-up tasks at the lake.  Looking forward to some hang-out time, too … maybe a trip to Mahar’s in Albany!

On the sports front, the Red Sox, Phillies and Flyers won (nice) … and the Breakers are worrisome.  Midfield, whazzup?

And Now There are Three!

Elena Kagan sure sounds good to me!

In other good news … how cool is it that Oakland’s Dallas Braden now has a perfect game under his belt!  As they note in the article, he now owns the mound … and is well beyond a mere 15-minutes of fame.

Take THAT, A-Hole (oops, I mean A-Rod).

Oh Man

The Red Sox … the Phillies … even Boltgirl’s Cubs … all landed on the losing side of the tally sheet yesterday.

So did Utah’s Senator Bob Bennett who apparently wasn’t a pure enough for the consrvative conservatives of Utah.  The trend could be an encouraging one, as the right-wingers split the Republican vote and splinter the party.  Although it’s a damn scary thought that one of them might actually win.

In Arizona, Sen. John McCain is in a tough primary fight against former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, a conservative talk-radio host. In Kentucky, Rand Paul, the son of libertarian Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, is gaining momentum in his challenge against the GOP establishment’s pick of Secretary of State Trey Grayson to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning.

In New Hampshire, former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte is battling three Republican challengers to fill the seat being vacated by Republican Judd Gregg.

Speaking of New Hampshire, what I’d like to see is a moderate Republican like Liz Hager run for Governor.  Was talking to a friend last night and we agreed that if someone like that were to run as an independent, he or she might just win it in this desperate-for-leadership state of ours!

Would you consider it, Liz?

On the WPS front I note that the Breakers and Freedom ended up in a 0-0 tie, whilst the Philly Independence were pegged with their first loss (by the Athletica), and FC Gold Pride continued to roll (right over the Red Stars).

And apropos of Mother’s Day … and, interestingly, of the movie I saw last night (Please Give), here’s a poem from today’s Writer’s Almanac:

The Stapler

by Ron Padgett

When my mother died

she left very little: old clothes,

modest furniture, dishes, some

change, and that was about it.

Except for the stapler. I found it

in a drawer stuffed with old bills

and bank statements. Right off

I noticed how easily it penetrated

stacks of paper, leaving no bruise

on the heel of my hand.

It worked so well I brought it home,

along with a box of staples, from

which only a few of the original 5000

were missing. The trick is remembering

how to load it—it takes me several minutes

to figure it out each time, but I persist until

Oh yes, that’s it! Somewhere in all this

my mother is spread out and floating

like a mist so fine it can’t be seen,

an idea of wafting, the opposite of stapler.

Soft Rain

It’s chilly here in NH this morning, and a soft rain is falling.  The gardens (with the exception of the ones I am responsible for) are looking absolutely beautiful this spring.  Must get cracking tomorrow (Always tomorrow, it seems.  I may need to pin this down a wee bit more for myself.)  Anyway, for today it ain’t on the list.  And it’s raining … sooooo …

Who am I trying to justify myself to, anyway?

Maybe HollyCornblog … who is always very, productive and hardworking?  But she’s not exactly the critical type.  Must just be those critical voices in my head.  The ones that yammer on and on, just under the radar for the most part … insidiously sapping my energy and confidence whilst fueling competition, comparativeness, and whiffs of paranoia here and there.  Yeah.

Begone, you echoes of grouchy and judgmental adults who used to hold sway over me.  Don’t need that stuff infecting my Saturday, or ANY precious day, for that matter.  I got rid of SP … I know I can get rid of you!  😉

So .. what have we going on?  The WPS is entering Week 5 with most games today, and the Beat vs. Sky Blue FC as the lone Sunday game (that’s the one on Fox Soccer Channel at 6PM ET).  The Breakers face off against the Freedom, and need to pull out of the offensive doldrums and post a win.  It’ll be a tough match, as their trajectories, today, seem to be in opposite directions.  I hope Beulah makes it to the B’s game … and for Comcast folks, you may be able to catch it on cable (not sure how that all works, but here’s what the Breakers’ front office says about it …

The Breakers travel to face the Washington Freedom this Saturday, seeking their second win against the Freedom this season while earning three points on the road. You can watch all of the action LIVE on Comcast SportsNet on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM EST. The Breakers will also host a game watch at Cityside at 1960 Beacon Street, Brighton, Mass. on Saturday at 6:00.

Make sure to print our your official Member game notes as you follow the action. You can print and download them at the following link:

Go Breakers!

I thought the B’s were playing at 7PM … but if you check in at 6, I guess you’ll find out …

Atlanta will be showcasing their new stadium on Sunday night … and aiming to cap the festivities with a win.  (And I am scrambling, as my fantasy team got pounded last week.  In soccer, I’m learning, if you guess wrong you can be very VERY wrong!)

Other than all this, congrats to Los Suns on being on the verge of sweeping the Spurs and to the Phillies’ Jamie Moyer for being the oldest pitcher ever (at 47) to pitch a shutout.  Nicely done – especially on the heels of the great Robin Roberts‘ death!

Meanwhile, Mel Gibson continues to solidify his rabid right-wing cred by allegedly cavorting with another porn star.  And then there’s George Rekers … and on and on.  Check out the details about George … very annoying but worth the read!  It must be exhausting, maintaining one’s status in that company of repressed religious dudes … who, come to think of it, probably have judgmental, critical, insidious voices that sound just like some of those echoes in my head.  Small world, eh?

Okay, gotta get myself moving here … have a great Saturday!
