Oh, and By the Way … Happy Birthday …

ChristopherCornblog!!!

;>)

See, I got a wee bit discombobulated (Is that how you spell it?) this morning.  Remembered at 6:23, forgot at 6:57, remembered again at 7:14, then forgot again ’til about 7:46.  Now it is 8:08 and I am remembering again!  Could it be denial?  Hmmmm …

Anyway … hope you have a good day, and get something as exciting as that little jeep you got back in … was it 1958?

I'm Off … Sort of …

So after today I’m off – to Bates Parents’ Weekend and the up to Deer Island.  There will be slim pickings here, I’m afraid … but I do have a few (very exciting) items in the works … and a standing invitation to Alice to be a guest blogger (which she has been ignoring thus far).

In news, I do see that the Fever have evened up their series with the Mercury at 1-1.

I’ll be missing out on FFootball this coming Sunday (unless there’s a wireless connection) … so Doris (wannabes), let me apologize ahead of time for trouncing you!

Oh, and Mo (SirHitsAlot) … see you soon for some face-to-face trash talk!

We're Up and Running!

PanelsI’m a little late with the news, here … but the solar panels are all installed and we are hooked into the grid and up and running … just in time for a rainy weekend!

Looking good, eh?

We still have to figure out how to read all the kilowatt hour info (and such) that the system puts out … but we’e on our way!

And speaking of being “on our way” – how about the various play-off pictures?

On the WNBA front, the Mercury are looking to improve on their Game 1 performance as they face off against the Fever for game 2 (9PM ET).  A little too late for yours truly, sad to say!

The Phillies clinched in a blow-out last night.  Now it gets serious/scary!

Check this out … a little sparring re. the Palin book … entertaining (and annoying – as is anything involving Ann Coulter).

And so it goes.

So …

A few random items this morning, beginning with FFootball!

  • Yo Doris – did you see who you’re playing this Sunday?  Get ready!  (Unfortunately I am going to be away and TV-less for the weekend .. but am hoping to be able to check in on line from time to time as the 2 Blitzen’ Babes dismantle wannabes!)
  • Red Sox clinched and Phillies won!
  • Cold Souls – at Red River (or wherever it may be in your neighborhood) – is a very creative, interesting, bizarre movie that you should check out if you get the chance.  There were several points where everyone in the theater was laughing out loud (and I’d be hard pressed to explain exactly why).
  • The Breakers traded A-Rod to Philly.  I am happy for her and pissed at Tony.  Not knowing much of anything about the situation ain’t gonna keep me from having an opinion.  From what I observed of his body language and attitude (from row 3, mind you, right next to the Breakers’ bench) I thought he was petulant and cranky with her for most of the season – rotten way to manage a young player.  It’s got me thinking that the success of the ’99ers had more to do with Foudy, Overbeck, Hacker, et al than it had to do with Tony.  Come on, Dude … get it together.
  • The Democrats got no backbone!  What are you so afraid of?   Stop hiding behind the GOP and take a damn stand!  (And no, Max, the highest priority now is to pass a GOOD bill – not just a f–king bill.)

Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) and Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) opposed the Schumer amendment. Baucus said he did so because he didn’t think it could garner 60 votes on the floor and his highest priority is to pass a bill.

Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Tom Carper (D-Del.) voted for the Schumer amendment, but joined Baucus, Conrad and Lincoln in opposing the Rockefeller amendment.

  • In the first game of the WNBA Finals the Mercury brought down the Fever in OT.  Too bad the game started so late!  (Brought down the Fever – get it?  Guess that’s a good thing during flu season, eh?!)

Going Rogue? You've Got to Be Kidding!

Yup, that’s the title of Sarah Palin’s soon-to-be-published memoir.  Given the role that lipstick has played in Ex-Governor Palin’s ascendancy, wouldn’t Going Rouge have been more apt?

I’m guessing that Bookeaters will not be reading this one – 400 pages of stoopid. As one commenter said, “Don’t you have to do something before you write a memoir?”  Apparently not.

But then again, I guess she has done a few things.  In comparison to me, she is a veritable whirlwind of activity and accomplishment.  I have trouble keeping up with this blog, and the rouged and lipsticked one has written 400 pages since August and given a speech in Tokyo … not to mention resigning as Governor, possibly divorcing her hubby, being a hockey mom and (presumably) a hockey grandma) … AND exercising regularly.

Now Levi’s memoir?  Might read that.  Get the real scoop about the rouged rogue.

Inspired (or goaded) but the thought of SP getting in her exercise, I did manage 15-minutes on the treadmill this AM … seeing as how tonight I’m at Red River with some combination of the Bookeaters.  Popcorn for dinner tonight!

FFootball standing after Week 3 are posted – with everything evening up.  Can’t wait to see how the 2 Blitzen’ Babes do with waivers this week!

Bingy VisitorOh, and here’s a picture from HollyCornblog …

… a visitor (actually, new resident) of our outhouse up at the lake.  (Apparently this industrious creature is making use of the used TP that has accumulated … yeeccchhhh!!)

Have a wonderful day, y’all!

I leave you with this poem that made me nostalgic for Philly (not that it takes much …).

Hot times, summer in the city …

Stadium Traffic

by Daniel Donaghy

You’re on your way home

when a thousand cars

pour onto Broad Street:

the ball game’s over.

No one’s going anywhere soon.

It’s mid-July: eighty and humid.

You smell like all the crappies in the Delaware,

wear the ache of dock crates in your back.

Your buddy lost two fingers tonight

to a jigsaw: boss said go home early,

stay late tomorrow night.

These people don’t appreciate

what they have: time to go to ball games.

You get out among blaring horns

and hustlers hawking T-shirts,

walk the yellow lines like a tight rope,

arms out for balance,

all the way to the corner and back.

Broad Street still as a parking lot,

wound tight as a fist.

You pop the trunk, fish a beer

from your cooler, and pound it.

Back in your car, the radio’s

recapping the game:

your team pulled one out

they would have blown last year.

You’ve blown the last year working

nights while your lady works days.

Night work means bad lighting,

and you’ve had enough close calls.

You’ve had enough overtime.

You’ve had enough.

Something has to give.

Somewhere in the distance a dog

is barking, a husband is coming home.

Monday Miscellaney

1BetsieBaysHere is a picture of HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew’s Betsie Bay Kayaks – I mainly post them for CB’s enjoyment (plus, truth be told, I was checking to see whether enabling Google Gears would still screw up my ability to upload pictures to the blog … apparently we’re all set).

And here’s page one of The Julie/Julia Project … which I Googled yesterday after one of our own Julie’s came home from the movie “Julie and Julia.”  This would have definitely been fun to follow as it unfolded!

On the FFootball front, I apparently missed out on some serious trash talking last night while we were discussing schedules, travel plans and other weighty matters in the house last night.  When I returned to the Phantastic Phootball Phanatics home page, I found that Pliny, Seacoast Salukis and bratybeaglebutts were just signing off after a significant round of rowdiness.  This is going to be an interesting FFootball season.

And yo, Mo – what the heck happened to TO????

All Done

1FloorDoneHollyCornblog sent a new batch of photos of the finished (re)construction work at the lake … and it’s looking amazingly good.  They did a stellar job.  If anyone is looking for someone to do this kind of work in the Cobleskill/Middleburgh/Renselaerville NY area, I’d highly recommend Terry Bartholemew.  (HollyCornblog can help you reach him, if need be.)

Here’s just one photo of the new floor, with one coat of poly down … and another to go next weekend.  Looking good, you guys!

In other news … a spider crawled all over the pope while he gave a speech in Prague … not for arachnophobes (you KNOW who I am talking about)!  Supposedly it went on the Pope’s face, although the video doesn’t actually show that.

Sad to see that the Red Sox, Phillies AND Penn State all lost.  And there will be plenty of controversy today, as Michael Vick likely will get his first playing time as the McNabless-Eagles face off against the Chiefs.  On the FFootball front, I think that the 2 Blitzin’ Babes are in good shape (but then I thought that last week, too.)

What else?  The Bates men and women both lost to Trinity yesterday … the men in OT and the women in a closer-than-it-sounds 2-0 match.  Beautiful day for soccer, though – and it was nice to see everyone.  On the ride up and back we explored numerous topics of great import … the proper way to boil an egg (a reprise from a previous trip to a Bates soccer game), the best way to toast toast … and the word for when you kidnap someone and make him/her work on your boat.  (Aren’t you impressed?)  ;>)

1BetsieBayOh. and here’s HollyCornblog (in silohuette) trying out her new, Betsie Bay kayak after a long day’s work at the lake.

Whoo hoo!!

Good luck to you this week, Pliny!

Soccer Stuff

Looks like another beautiful September day as apple crisp bakes downstairs, the sun rises here, and we get ready to head up to Bates for some NESCAC Soccer.  Go Bobcats!

In WPS Soccer news, I see that the Germans are sitting out another WPS season.  Fine, be that way!  (Is it me, but does this seem kinda rigid and, er, Germanic?)

1Floor DoneUp at the lake, the floor is all done and, from what we hear, very, very solid.

HollyCornblog says we can now jump in the house.

Thank goodness, as I have been finding it harder and harder to avoid jumping as the years have gone on!  (I am sure that many readers of JordanCornblog feel the same way, eh?)

1Floor Done2She and CharlieHopBrew are going up there today to poly the floor and do some kayaking.  I hope the weather stays sunny for ’em!

Meanwhile, as I edge my way back to reading some news, I must say that I kind of enjoyed perusing the Clintons’ enemies list.  Remembering back to those days, with the constant drip, drip, drip of stuff like Whitewater, it’s no wonder that his frustration broke out colorfully from time to time.  I particularly enjoyed reading his assessment of Dubya …

Though he admired Dubya’s political skills, Clinton found him to be cold in private. At a White House dinner, Clinton found Bush “miserable and hostile the whole time.” “Of course, he’s never forgiven me for beating his father,” Clinton told Branch, “but that’s about as deep as his political conviction gets. All this ‘compassionate conservative’ business is phony.”

Phony, indeed.  I wonder if Dubya has the requisite grey matter to be phony.  Lately I’ve been thinking that perhaps all the drinking actually led to some brain damage – and we’ll be discovering, somewhere down the road, that like Reagan, this GOP luminary was demented for some portion of his time in office.

Or, another way to put it … without Karl Rove, what’s left of Bush’s brain?

I’m just sayin’.
