HAPPY BIRTHDAY HollyCornblog!

The weather is nice (here in New England at least) and my running regimen seems to be going pretty well.  News of the world continues to be singularly uninspiring and/or disturbing.  There are MacKenzie Phillips’ revelations … and then the backlash that she anticipated (but is still pretty sick stuff to read).  There is the news out of Afghanistan.  There is the Wall Street mess … and then our Senators putting on a show of incompetence and lack of scruples, masked as concern for our well-being.

But yes, the weather sure has been nice … and the running is going well …. and there isone piece of fantastic news today – it’s HollyCornblog’s Birthday!

1FloorOh, and in other good news, the work at the lake continues at an amazing pace.

Here’s the latest picture of the progress on the floor … HollyCornblog says it’s about halfway done.

And you know what?

I’m late … again.

Beeg – I’m coming!!!

More Lake Pics!

Peak BeforeLast night HollyCornblog sent along some more pictures of progress on the lake house.

Work continues to move along at a very impressive clip!

The pair of photos that I found most impressive (and sobering) show the peak of the roof of this 107 year old ediface.

The first photo is of the peak BEFORE the work at the base of the house started …

Peak Now… and the second is from yesterday.  If you click on the pictures (those of you who have an interest), you can see how much it’s pulling together,

(It’s scary/sobering to see where things were headed.)

In addition, HollyCornblog reports that she is now the proud owner of a Betsie Bay Kayak.

How a 17-foot kayak can weigh in at 29-33 lbs is flabbergasting, eh?

Running late – as usual – so TTFN!

I Don't Really Want to Keep Talking About John Edwards

Nor do I really want to keep reading about him.  But it appears he is going to be back in the news for a bit longer.  Boy do I feel duped by John and Elizabeth.

And then there’s the re-emergence of the Divine Ms. P. – speechifying in Hong Kong.  Perhaps there will be links to follow – perhaps not.  (I am trying to quell my Palin Poop Proclivities!)

Lake work1On a more positive note, work on the house at the lake continues apace – and might even be finished up by the weekend according to the latest from HollyCornblog.

Here’s a photo of what the floor-less first floor area looked like on Monday.

By today it may all be replaced and strengthened with nice new beams and a hefty pier or two in the middle of the house (something that was sorely lacking through the first 107 years of its existence!

Lake Work2The floor will be insulated, and much more solid … and hopefully this will mean that the place holds together for another 107 years (or so).

To be continued …

In addition to the work at the lake, the solar panels here at PHC are nearly all set (or so it appears). I got home in the dark last night, so haven’t had a good look yet – but will post some pictures in the near future.

On the FFootball front, I am falling down on the Trash Talking responsibilities … time, time, time – gotta make time for the trash!  With the exception of strongersmarter and Pliny, everyone in the Phantastic Phootball Phanatics is at 1-1 heading into Week 3 (when, presumably, we’ll begin to see some separation).  And hey, Seacoast Salukis – what are you doing taking my Eagles defense???!!!!  ;>)

;>)

And so it goes …

Tons of Updating to Do … But Not This Morning!

Beautiful Lake DayHey – I got back yesterday after a great visit to HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew.  Lots to tell – but for now it’s late and I’ve gotta get to work early (a bad combination)!

Here’s what the September weather was like over the weekend (as many of you already know).  Gorgeous, clear air – warm enough to not be miserable in the water – and cool enough to make it feel ever so slightly dangerous!

;>)

Still Hiding Out …

Yup – the JordanCornbog news blackout continues.  If there is any news at all (and I admit, I may have not been able to resist posting) it will only be of the very most local variety.

I’m talking pictures of the work progress at the lake, live blogging as CharlieHopBrew cooks our fresh NH chicken on the GreenEgg on the back porch, the view from the chiminea, that sort of thing …

Maybe a little Fantasy Football trash talking, too.  (Is YOUR line-up set?)

But in the meantime, if you need a wee bit of trenchant commentary, I refer you to this post about Stoopid Peepul and our national worhsip of same … that Boltgirl posted right around this time last week.  (Oh, and in deference to JPE, I won’t even mention Sarah Palin.)  Not at all.

News Black Out Continues at JordanCornblog

Talk Like a Pirate FoundersToday the only thing that I am reporting is that September 19th is … as so many of you probably know, the 7th annual, national (aaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh, sorry, INTERnational) Talk Like a Pirate Day.

I sure wish I’d come up with that idea.

All it takes is a cool idea and someone like Dave Barry writing a column, and there you go.  Seven years later, people like JordanCornblog are using you to avoid reality and try to garner some attention for themselves at the same time.  Nice.

Computer games, t-shirts, bicycle parts, snack foods, you name it, International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLPD) has been used to shill it. The impromptu holiday got its official start in 2002 after two friends, John “Ol’ Chumbucket” Baur and Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers, were catapulted into the limelight by nationally-syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry, who wrote a column on their previously personal celebration.

Their website http://talklikeapirate.com will be a busy place today, as visitors land from around the globe to read interesting facts and frequently asked questions, like:

Q. The big one: WHY?

A. Why not?

Talking like a pirate is fun. It’s really that simple. It adds a zest, a swagger, to your every day conversation. Do you need another reason?

Try it out. Let go, have a beer, burp in public. Say “Aarrr!!” Feels good, doesn’t it?

So talk like a pirate today.  I know I will be, as we get into the lake to shiver our timbers right to the bone, dragging the dock out of that icy September water!

Oh, and if Jack and Mark want to be the spokesperson(s) for Rogue … doesn’t that seem fitting?  I think being the face of Rogue … ANY Rogue brew … is the perfect next step for one (or both) of the founders of this holiday.  Come on Rogue – take them up on it!

How Despicable … I'm Leaving!

This statistic is horrifying … and yet we, as a nation, seem unable to muster the will to push through meaningful healthcare reform.  Meanwhile, those who are least likely to favor measures that could save lives are probably the same folks who tout the moral superiority of the US of A … and would much rather see pregnant women die than allow them to make choices about their bodies.

So, I have decided to flee.  Yes, it’s true … I am leaving and going to visit HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew.  I may or may not check the news while I am away.  I may or may not blog.  It’s all up in the air.

Drainage stonesI will be checking out the work that’s underway at the lake (shoring up the foundations, putting drainage all around the house, replacing the livingroom floor). The photo is of the pile of gravel they’ll be packing in around the house for drainage.

Oh, and we will also be taking in the dock, bringing in the boats for the winter … and maybe also splitting some firewood down at H&C’s house.  Then, of course, there is also FFootball to keep up with … and HollyCornblog’s home brews to sample.

Healthcare reform will just have to wait ’til I get back, I guess …

Teen Birthrates Highest in Most Religious States

All I can say is hmmm …

However, the results don’t say anything about cause and effect, though study researcher Joseph Strayhorn of Drexel University College of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh offers a speculation of the most probable explanation: “We conjecture that religious communities in the U.S. are more successful in discouraging the use of contraception among their teenagers than they are in discouraging sexual intercourse itself.”

Guess I should also say … DUH!

RIP Mary Travers … your music was a gift, as was your good work on the political front.  Your voice will be missed in so many ways!

I'm With John Marcotte

Running late, but wanted to weigh in on the defense of marriage.

Yup, I’m with John Marcotte – if we’re going to defend traditional marriage, lets defend it all the way.  No more half measures … after all, this is a sacred institution.

‘Til death do us part … hear that?

Oh, and while we’re at it (totally unrelated) the Breakers lost a couple of stalwarts in the expansion draft.  Here’s the data …

In addition to Schmedes and Weber, the Philadelphia Independence also selected Lori Lindsey (2nd overall) and Sarah Senty (9th overall) from the Washington Freedom, Jen Buczkowski (3rd overall) from Sky Blue FC, and Nikki Krzysik (5th overall) and Danesha Adams (11th overall) from the Chicago Red Stars.

The Atlanta Beat selected Leigh-Ann Robinson from FC Gold Pride (1st overall), Amanda Cinalli (4th overall) and Sara Larsson (10th overall) from Saint Louis Athletica, Katie Larkin (6th overall) and Sharolta Nonen (8th overall) from the Los Angeles Sol, and Noelle Keselica (12th overall) from Sky Blue FC.

Finally, apropos of the defense of marriage … sorta … this from The Writer’s Almanac this morning …

Particle Physics

by Julie Kane

They say two photons fired through a slit

stay paired together to the end of time;

if one is polarized to change its spin,

the other does a U-turn on a dime,

although they fly apart at speeds of light

and never cross each other’s paths again,

like us, a couple in the seventies,

divorced for almost thirty years since then.

Tonight a Red Sox batter homered twice

to beat the Yankees in their playoff match,

and, sure as I was born in Boston, when

that second ball deflected off the bat,

I knew your thoughts were flying back to me,

though your location was a mystery.
