Democracy in Decline? Fiddle Dee Dee, I'll Think About That Tomorrow …

Last week Bill Moyers was on The Daily Show talking about Democracy … and his new book of essays on the subject. An excerpt linked here (from the Common Dreams website) describes Democracy as a series of narrow escapes … and wonders if we can do it this time. He puts our current situation in historical context … and in incisive, elegant prose, decries and demystifies the disinclination of the press to speak truth about (or to) power.

But the American public has little energy for weighty fare (like articles on Democracy), so I’ll turn to the JordanCornblog version of celebrity news … Continue reading

Wambach Interview, Parker Debut

Abby and Mia-Back in the DayHere’s a nice interview with Abby that appeared @ ten days ago in USA Today. Buzz cut, huh? Can’t remember seeing that – but here’s a goal celebration from back in those wonderful WUSA daze … when Mia and Abby first started playing together … and Abby did so well that April could not NOT call her up for the USWNT!Candace is Drafted!

Meanwhile, how about Candace Parker’s debut with LA? She’ll have Sparks fans forgetting the debacle with fellow Lady Vol Chamique Holdsclaw soon enough. And Katie Douglas is with the Fever now? Clearly I’ve got some WNBA catching up to do … starting with adding the League Site to my Links! Check out the (Free) all access videos … they look kind of cool.

Oh. Go Ahead, John … Kiss Him!

Go ahead, John … Kiss Him!Gary Hart has written (on the Huffngton Post) an excellent piece on John McCain and al Qaeda. He laments that the erstwhile maverick seems to have succumbed to the siren song of power … leaving his brain and his moral compass in the dirt. “If John McCain seriously believes we are at war with al Qaeda in Iraq, that alone is such a serious error in judgment as to rank him with George W. Bush at his worst and therefore disqualify him from any chance to govern this country.” Here, here!

HollyCornblog’s adventures in Florida continued yesterday with an “alligator tour.” Sounds lovely, huh? Well, it was a more slimy and squirmy affair than even I had imagined … Continue reading

Publicans, Republicans, and Pro Publica

JordanCornblog On the HillWell, I’ve written the title, so now I need to offer the content! First – on the “publicans” front … HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew (two of my favorite publicans … using the term loosely and in its spirits-related sense) are still in Florida. This time last week I’d have been waking to a glorious spring day at their place … one that would include a morning walk to top of the hill behind their house, some serious wood stacking, lots of catching up, and of course, some beer-tasting! Continue reading

Of All the Gall!

I sure hope her recovery goes smoothly and well!

clipped from www.ussoccer.com

U.S. Captain Christie Rampone Has Surgery to Remove Her Gall Bladder
“The surgery went well and I’m feeling great,” said Rampone. “I was in good hands and my recovery is already underway. I’m going to take it slow, so I can be 100% when I get back. If I was going to have my gall bladder out, this is probably a good time.”

Lieberman, Bush, Oil, Terror … Is It the Weekend Yet?

I agree with one of the comments made about this story (in which Senator Lieberman agrees with Dubya’s attacks on Obama). Senator Lieberman should be stripped of his committee assignments and shown the door by the Dems. His is a voice that’s nearly as repugnant to me at this point as Dubya’s … now THAT’S an accomplishment!

And Bush is going to visit the Saudi’s – ostensibly to garner their aid in bringing oil prices down – but more likely to hold hands and do some more of those little dances he likes to do when overseas. Does anyone really think he wants to bring oil prices down? I surely don’t.

And then there’s the Tennessee GOP attacking Michelle Obama.  This is sure going to get ugly, folks.  More opportunities to feel proud of being an American – brought to you, reliably (like nightmares after a self-indulgent, gout-inducing, too-rich meal) by the Grand Old Party.  Ugh!

Fascinating Friday Footie Factoids

Fair Game Magazine has, in this issue, a nice article about the recent documentary featuring the German Women’s National Team. Apparently the documentary has had English subtitles added .. and is available on You-Tube in multiple segments. Cool.

It’s been confirmed that the USWNT will play Brazil twice in July … and BOTH GAMES WILL Continue reading

I Made Jeff Bezos and George Bush Happy This Week

Yup, I did. It’s kind of a drag to admit the latter .. but there it is. How, you ask? What could possibly please these two rather different versions of homo erectus? (And yes, I mean erectus. Have you ever seen how Dubya walks? That stupid swagger of his? Definitely erectus.)

Anyway … yup … I went and spent a part of my “stimulus” check at Amazon on … drumroll … can you guess … Continue reading

HollyCornblog Update and Other News

JordanCornblog Capping Some BrewsHollyCornblog is now in Florida, where she watched the Flyers lose Game 3 of their match-up with the Penguins … and where I am sure she will be sampling Florida hops and learning all sorts of new brewing tricks. It was great fun to witness some bottling when I was visiting this past weekend. I even got to cap a bunch of the bottles with the little gizmo pictured to the left (which I had nearly gotten the hang of using by the time we were done). But there’s more … Continue reading
