Uh Oh … Osborne Out

OsborneLeslie Osborne tore her ACL in training and is out for the Oly’s. I’m sorry to hear that, as she seemed a solid shot for the USWNT roster. It’s got to be extremely difficult, to be this close and have something like that happen. I’m guessing that Heather Mitts can be a big support at a time like this, having been through it not so long ago!

Bob Barr the Libertarian Spoiler … Memorial Day Musings … and Other Monday Meanderings

Bob BarrOne can only hope that Mr. Barr, the new Libertarian nominee for President, will do for the Republicans what Mr. Nader did for the Democrats in 2000. Anything that will help turn the tide is good in my book. While I never in a million years thought I’d have been happy to hear that the self-righteous Mr. Barr of the Clinton impeachment days was running for anything … turns out I am!

And here is a piece from the CommonDreams site about Memorial Day on how we might best honor our soldiers … and on how thoroughly we dishonor them now. “A report released by the Rand Corporation last month indicates that approximately 300,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffer PTSD or major depression. That’s one of every five military men and women who have served over there.” And yet the response from so many in the bureaucracy is to try to hide statistics such as these … as opposed to setting about the business of honestly trying to deal with them.

Meanwhile, on the hop trellis front, here’s a picture of HollyCornblog Continue reading

Romney and Robber Barons and Recluses (Oh My)

Apple BlossomsIt’s a beautiful late-spring morning and no one should be indoors reading (or writing) blogs. But on the off chance that you are, here are a few tidbits to mull as you garden or relax and play …

First … a nice illustration of how the rich are different! In an environment of high gas prices and high mortgage foreclosures, Mitt Romney is moving to California. One of the stated reasons? “…his wife likes to ride horses here.”

Next, a piece from the Post about how Exxon is not only bleeding us but also its franchise owners. Feels like they know their good times are nearly over (with their corrupt cronies about to exit the White House) and they’re squeezing out every last billion while they can.

And all is not hearts and flowers in USWNT land, as evidenced by this Continue reading

Saturday … Ya Gotta Love It!

Here’s a feel good piece if I’ve ever seen one! It’s about a Bush-McCain Fundraiser that had to be scaled back due to poor ticket sales.

Cindy McCainBut enough about the guys. Nothing about HollyCornblog today … sorry. But Hillary is doing a pretty okay job of explaining her very, very unfortunate remarks about Bobby Kennedy’s assassination the other day. Bill is apparently out talking some Veep talk – while Hillary is keeping quite mum about it all. Personally, I like the idea … but no one has actually asked me yet. And here’s a photo of Cindy McCain … just because she really, really scares me. Period.

Here’s an interview with the person I’d like to see in the White House … Continue reading

Scary, Sad, Sobering Photo from HollyCornblog

Jacks and Minnows - The Untold Story! This photo of those pesky Florida Jacks devouring millions and millions of their miniature minnow minions brought me up short.

As HollyCornblog commented: “If you zoom in you can see the little minnows trying to get out of the way of all the jacks. Poor little guys.” My first thought … Jacks=Oil Companies, Minnows=Us. Whatever your interpretation … it sure doesn’t look like a good time to be a minnow!

Friday, Finally!

My first read this morning included some tough talk from John Conyers regarding Karl Rove and the Judiciary Committee’s subpoena of Mr. Turdblossom himself. You go John! Meanwhile, the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is also investigating a widening number of alleged “selective prosecutions” which may have been (OMG) politically motivated. I’m glad this is happening – but did it all really have to wait ’til Bush was a duck so lame as to be nearly unable to waddle around?

Let’s turn to the WNBA for some more inspiring fare. Rookies are making splashes all around the league, with the LA Sparks’ Candace Parker the obvious head of the class (and Sylvia Fowles not far behind in Chicago). In Minnesota, rookies Continue reading

Viral E-Mails and Oil Tycoons … Then It Gets Better

Oily Oil GuysThis caught my eye yesterday … while Obama’s patriotism continues to be attacked in viral e-mails, here are our very favorite top oil execs testifying before Congress about their profits. Now these are major American patriots one and all. I’m sure they all have flag pins and nice presentable church memberships and middle names like Robert and Scott … certainly not Hussein. The cream of America. Patrick Leahy asked them how much they made … and one of them didn’t know. Imagine the luxury of that.

Turning to more palatable fare, we have Continue reading

Wednesday Wingnuts … from the GOP to the Yankees

JordanCornblog at HollyCornblog’s ChimineaFirst off, WELCOME HOME HollyCornblog. Hope you found everything in order … and no odd strangers hanging out at your chiminea!

Just a couple of things today … first, this news bit and clip from Talking Points Memo featuring a GOP Consultant on their panel named Alex Castellanos. He makes the trenchant argument that sometimes people call women “bitch” because the label is fitting. It’s the sort of thoughtful and incisive analysis that I, for one, have come to expect from the party that nominated George W. Bush.

Second … can you say golden thong? Okay, and can you say Orioles 12, Yankees 2? ‘Nuff said!

HollyCornblog Heads Home

Yes, that’s right … HollyCornblog is heading home today. And none too soon Bathroom Visitor!… it’s time for this alligator-haunted vacation to come to an end. The other day, she wrote that she grabbed her towel to take a shower … and this little guy fell onto the floor. Yikes! If that’s not a baby alligator I don’t know what it is! The interloper was summarily transferred from room to poolside … from whence he disappeared.

Meanwhile, she also sent along some great pictures of some fish called “Jacks” Continue reading
