Good Morning World!

My sister is visiting this weekend (YEAH!) and among other things we’ll be celebrating the second annual beer tasting fest … an activity which she pretty much initiated here last winter (and at which I made the sad discovery that some people I hold very dear actually like WHEAT BEER).  I apologize if I am offending anyone with my utter incredulity … but could someone please explain WHY?!?!  We’ll also be embarking on the first (annual?) chocolate-tasting extravaganza.  Just in time for Valentine’s day, I’m learning that chocolate (especially dark chocolate) can be quite good for me … wonderful!

Sled DogsPlans for weekend activities have not entirely gelled, but we will definitely be visiting some Concord hotspots (like the Coop, Butters, maybe Red River Theatres, etc.) and might check out the dog sled races in Laconia today or tomorrow!

On the soccer front, I read last night that Pia has made her first round of cuts, releasing eleven players at this stage, and calling up a few more to assess.  Christie Welsh was among those let go.  I was sad to see that, and wonder if she’ll continue to try for the USWNT.  Perhaps when WPS teams get up and running next spring, she’ll return to the mix.

More to come as the day goes on … and stay tuned as I try to get my sister to create her own blog entry sometime over the course of her visit!

Ryan and Pellerud Hook Up … (Uh) Oh Canada :(

Check out this excellent article by Gayle Bryan in Fair Game Magazine.  Apparently Greg Ryan, in addition to coaching at Michigan, will be helping the Canadian Team prepare for the Olympics.

In this interview he continues to show the character and class that have recently so endeared him to many followers of the USWNT.  He continues to take no responsiblity for anything and to blame either Hope Solo or the rest of the team for any and all issues that came to the fore during the World Cup.

He’s even reached back to diss the 2004 Olympic Team.  What’s the point, Greg?  I had my issues with April Heinrichs, too – but she at least had some character and some respect – both for her players and for herself.  I can’t imagine her giving the post-Cup “performance” that Ryan has.  And yet … on he goes.  I feel especially sorry for the young Michigan players who’ll be experiencing his leadership.  What a classy guy!

And this continued, self-justifying and team-blaming blathering from Ryan makes me oh-so-curious about what the team members think about him and his comments … and how Pia has managed each small eruption of this ongoing controversy.  I bet she’s had some very choice observations!  😉 Unfortunately, they will all be too classy to air any of it publically.

Finally, Greg touts his record … and notes (with the self-effacing humlity we have come to expect) how unlikely it will be for the US to have another coach as successful as he was.  Man … I sure hope Pia stays around at least long enough to eclipse his record … and erase that smug, vacant-looking smirk.

See What the CIA Says About Tanzania!

Mount Kilimanjaro, TanzaniaI was doing a little research on the beautiful nation that’s home to Mount Kilimanjaro … and its president, Jakaya Kikwete … when I came upon this CIA site about Tanzania … which I found at once informative and a little creepy.  I’ve added it to my blogroll … but it may not stay all that long.  Lord only knows what sorts of tracking devices are embedded there …

You can look up lots of countries and see what the CIA publishes on the web about them.  Sort of “interesting,” but I just don’t know how to interpret the information … or why they are putting it out there.  It’s not going to be secret stuff … and they’re not going to share anything sensitive.  So what are they up to?  If they’re publishing it, doesn’t that mean that by definition it’s got to be pretty much meaningless (from their perspective).

Why would I be interested in anything that the CIA is willing to put up on the web?  It’s gotta be weasily propaganda, right?  In terms of their mission, isn’t something purely educational/informational, kind of by definition, irrelevant?  And frankly if they really are doing something that’s informational, shouldn’t it be published by some slightly less tainted Department?  (Although what Department that might be in this Administration is a good and worthy … and quite possibly unanswerable … question.)

So anyway … I return to my original, troubling question.  Why are they doing it?  Should I trust the info?  Having clicked on it, am I now on some list that I wasn’t already on?  Will my buying habits and e-mails now be monitored from a large windowless office building/bunker in Virginia?  Am I sounding a little panicky … a little high pitched … all of a sudden?  😉

RPE, this one’s for you!

Another One Bites the Dust

I’m referring, not to a candidate … but to another undefeated, #1 team from New England that’s been handed its first loss (by a team from the greater NY area).  This time it was the Lady Huskies … who met their match at Rutgers last night.  It was a real barnburner of a game … with the Scarlet Knights down by 9 points at the half, but storming back for the thrilling, two-point win … in large part due to the hot hand of Rutgers sophomore Epiphanny Prince (33 points).  Rutgers won’t be able to savor this too long, as they face Tennessee on Monday (ESPN-7PM).  I wonder if Don Imus was watching as Rutgers pulled off their 73-71 upset.

In other news … who can untangle the Super Tuesday returns?  Looks like McCain pretty much has it in the bag.  Could the influence of our overweight, over-wrought, drug-addled friend Mr. Limbaugh be waning?  (I seem to have seedy radio hosts on the brain at the moment.)  Obama and Clinton continue to duke it out, with little more having been clarified.  Here are the CNN numbers as of dawn today:

Before I sign off, a small confession.  It appears that my excitement about someone from Australia reading JordanCornblog was premature.  What looked like a reader on the web stats was probably (in the sad glare of hindsight) just a robot or search engine hit.  I am going to leave off writing about Nicole Kidman for the time being and focus my energies on Tanzania. We’ll see if that’s a more fruitful venue for new readers.  Stay tuned, and for starters, here’s a news feed from Tanzania … IPPMedia … which will help keep you up to date on news from that part of the world.  (Sadly, perusing the page, I note that Bush is going to be visiting Tanzania shortly … “solidifying his legacy” … don’t know that means, but it sounds scary.)

So … as we head into Wednesday, the pundits, pollsters, campaign hacks  and spinmeisters will be punning (or maybe that’s punding) and polling and hacking and spinning happily all day long.  (And by the way, for the very, very best in punditing, check out Rachel Maddow  on Air America [just added to my blogroll].)  Meanwhile, Rutgers and U Conn will be back in their respective gyms practicing … I’ll head to work … and life just goes on!

If It's Tuesday … Well … SUPER!

Today’s the big day.  I wonder what it feels like for the candidates, waking up this morning.  Wonder if they slept.  Here’s the delegate count (including super delegates) as of dawn today:

… and just in case you’re wondering why your vote might be important … here’s the “War Sheet” from the Newsmeat site (source of the table above, too):

Its sounds like there are a number of states (Massachusetts, California) where the results will be very telling and, at least on the Republican side, could lead to a withdrawal.  For example, were Romney to lose in his “home” state of Massachusetts, that would be a real blow.  (And quite frankly, it’s hard for me to imagine the Bay State not feeling a tad peeved with him and the way he’s tried to distance himself from stands that he ran on there.)  For Clinton and Obama it sounds like it’s way too close to call … all over the place.  And on the Democratic side most of the delegate allocations are proportional – so the ultimate stakes aren’t quite so stark as on the Republican side, where there is the potential for McCain to more or less lock it up today.

Whatever .. it’ll be an interesting night tonight!

Steve Nash Supporting Women's Professional Soccer(And Other Tidbits)

Here’s an article about how the Phoenix Suns’ star Steve Nash is supporting the new WPS in a big way.  I guess soccer is his second love and he was quite a player – as well as being a Santa Clara alum (so very familiar with high caliber women’s college soccer).  I have always liked Steve Nash a lot – his style of play, his attitude … the fact that he’s Canadian – and this just seals it for me.  Go Suns!

Following up on Friday’s “mega introduction” of goalkeepers and defenders at Pia’s February USWNT camp, here’s Karyn Lush’s preview of the new(ish) midfielders and forwards.  Read about midfielders:  Jen Buczkowski, Tina DiMartino, Lindsey Huie, Sarah Huffman, Noelle Keselica, Joanna Lohman, Manya Makoski, and Angie Woznuk … and forwards Lauren Cheney, Amy Rodriguez, Tiffany Weimer, and Christie Welsh

Old Style Arpanet

When I posted that table earlier today (the one I was so proud of because it listed Australia), it raised an interesting question (thanks, CB) that I had been just glossing over in my admitted obsesson with web stats.

What is Old Style Arpanet?  I am at a loss … but have collected an even more obscure explanation here.  It’s related to the DNS (Domain Naming System) … that much I have gathered.  It seems to have some connection with the military, which makes me a little nervous.

And it is very old .. one might even say, Old Style!  Here’s a short history of the internet by Vicky Vickers (who appears to be from British Columbia – or at least was, back in 2000 when this was written).  It’s out of date, certainly, but at least gives some context for this mysterious and mystical Arpanet.

I’m going to get back to my vacuuming and will contemplate the bits and pieces I’ve read here while I clean … and wonder whether my failure to take high school calculus is the reason this all sounds so like Greek to me!

CB … I think I can tell you with some surity that, as a vacation destinaton, Arpanet would suck!

Australia!

Oh my!  Check out # 10 on the stats from this morning!  That’s two hits from down under.  (My guess is it was Evonne Goolagong who did it!)  Now we’ll turn our focus to Tanzania.
