FFootball Draft Done

Alice … you can stop reading right here, because while it felt like waking up on Christmas morning for some of us, for most of the world, this brief post will hold absolutely no interest.

The 3 Blitzen Babes made out well at the QB spot, snagging Aaron Rodgers.  But god help us if he gets hurt … as, with 20 teams, there are no viable QB’s left to pick up on Waivers.  We’re very thin in the Wide Receiver slot, too.  This is going to be a very interesting season.

Lots of horse-trading, I predict.

But it’s a beautiful day … and I gotta get started.  First on the To Do List … cleaning up the basement so I can exercise down there without breathing in cobwebs.

Aren’t you glad you stopped by?

PS  The Breakers play Philly in West Chester this evening – game of the week on FSC.  Philly could clinch a play-off spot with a win.  (Don’t let that happen, B’s!)

Okay

That’s more like it.

Note to Self: Try to Be More Specific

In yesterday’s note to the Phillies I suggested that they stop losing one-run games, but neglected to say that they should WIN.

So, to Phillies phans everywhere, I apologize, as yesterday’s loss is clearly on me.

Guys … you need to WIN.  I don’t care by how much – just do it!

Notes

To Phillies:  Stop losing one run games, okay?  The universe is doing everything it can to get you into the post season … but you have to help!

To Chase Utley and Ryan Howard:  Relax.  Just do what you do.  You’ll be fine.

To Ken Mehlman:  Glad you’re at peace now, buddy … but either your ability to compartmentalize and/or delude yourself is seriously concerning or you are one of the more despicable people on the planet.  I hope you take more time to really, really assimilate what you were complicit in … the damage done.  Of course, the gay community is generally being more welcoming than JordanCornblog …

Many high-profile LGBT activists have already embraced Mehlman since his announcement earlier Wednesday. “We hope the fact that Ken Mehlman has reached this level of honesty will now encourage other political leaders to reject divisive anti-gay campaign tactics which, as Mr. Mehlman now admits, are purely cynical attempts to manipulate the American public,” Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund President and CEO Chuck Wolfe said in a public statement.

It’s that “purely cynical” part that eats at me, Ken.  But I guess I’m glad that you can frame it as such.  When you become a Democrat, I’ll actually embrace you.

So, there’s more to look forward to, big guy!

To Self:  Get draft picks all set for FFootball … the draft is at 6AM on Sunday morning 8/29/10!

To Dick:  Tick, tick.

More Rain and a Win for McCain

When at a loss for a title, a rhyme always helps (I say).  Rhymes can also give direction to an otherwise directionless morning.  Had the Phillies won their extra innings game, I’d be writing about that, you can be sure.  But they did not, and I am not.  So there it is.

At least the Braves lost, too.  But poor Cole Hamels!  He continues to pitch beautifully … and to lose … as the Phillies’ offense just won’t produce for him.

Was it something he said?

On the political front, John McCain gets to run again in AZ … and Wonkette has the best write-up I’ve seen so far.  If it takes that much to hang onto your seat … shouldn’t you question what you’re doing and why?  Guess not.  Witness Rick Scott, who spent even more to buy the opportunity to run again in Florida.

It’s all so inspiring!

And then there’s the Miller-Murkowski race in Alaska.  Still too close to call … but it ain’t looking so good for Murkowski.  Shrillness and stupidity appear to be taking the day (again).  How embarrassing for Alaska!  Here’s Mudflats on it all … with an update expected later today!

Light rain continues to fall here in NH … most thankfully.  And Dick continues to tick … or hum.  I’d love to have a nap … but need to get myself moving toward work.

TTFN!

Blessed Rain

Yes, it’s raining.  What a lovely sound on the roof through the night.  It’s been a gentle one, too … which means it has half a chance of actually soaking into the parched ground.  Yippee!

I’m late to the table here, and luckily had some interesting links sent to me by Alison .. or I’d have very little to offer.

First, she sent along an excellent blog post from Commentaries of the Times titled “An Open Letter to Dr. Laura.”  I confess that I’ve not been following this tale too closely, as it has the ring of so many other shrill and hateful stories in the air these days.  (Plus, I’ve been obsessed with Dick, as many of you know.)  Anyway, Playthell Benjamin plays it well, and I (predictably) love his comments about the Pit Bull there at the end!

Then there’s Captured America in Color … photos taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information between 1939 and 1943.  I found their every-day-ness absolutely fascinating!  Check out the photo with the peach crates on a wagon heading to market.  It’s #24 and the caption reads:  “Hauling crates of peaches from the orchard to the shipping shed. Delta County, Colorado, September 1940. Reproduction from color slide. Photo by Russell Lee. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress.”

… and then check out OUR peaches, 70 years later … harvested this past Saturday and Sunday.  😉

It’s amazing to me how such a dry summer can yield such luscious fruits.  Perhaps it’ll be next year that we see the effects of our near-drought.

And finally, here’s Willie on a sunnier afternoon than we’re likely to see today.  He’s my role model at the moment, for aging gracefully …

Wonder what he’s thinking?

Dreaming of tennis balls, no doubt … and sticks thrown into the Merrimack … and leaping off the dock up at the lake.  No thoughts of pit bulls or of Dick .. or other equally unworthy subjects.

Ah, Willie …

Peace.

Hops Beat Out Breakers and Phillies Today

Yup, it’s hops I’ll write about, as both the Breakers and the Phillies lost when they really, really should have won yesterday.

Hey Phillies … it’s August – you can’t afford to be losing to the Nationals, okay?

And Breakers … remember last year?  ’nuff said.

You can’t be losing to the Beat with a play-off slot on the line.  Yes, you were decimated … but still!  (And what I really, really want to know is how come Eniola Aluko wasn’t called up for some English national team duty, too?  Hope Powell … that was hardly fair!  Do you have it in for Tony or something?)

The Breakers next travel to West Chester, PA to play Philly in the FSC game of the week next Sunday.  That ain’t gonna be an easy one … and I’m getting nervous … again!

Anyway … so let’s turn to the happier subject of  hops.

HollyCornblog has been madly harvesting these little critters (they do look like critters, don’t they) for several days now.

She has them drying on a small drying rack (we’re talking really small) that I’d given her … and on their dining room table … and on a couch in their front room.

Then she got the great idea of bringing home an old screen door from the lake … and voila!

Meanwhile, it sounds like she’s got tons more to pick.  Can’t wait to sample a few brews … maybe in late November … watching hours upon hours of Sunday football.  Ahhhhh yessssss!!!!!

Maintenance Notice!

My web host tells me that they’ll be doing some kind of maintenance tonight …

WHEN: Saturday, August 21st 2010 | Start time: 10:30 PM EST – 7:00AM EST

So if you’re looking for JordanCornblog between those hours, it sounds like you’ll be out of luck.

(Of course, if you’re looking for JordanCornblog between those hours you won’t see this message, either.)

All I can say is … don’t panic! Check out the Shelby Lynne Videos on YouTube while you mark the empty hours, okay?  Here’s Shelby back in 1989 performing her debut solo single. Interesting comments if you go to the YouTube site.

http://www.youtube.com/v/mQiwdX9H2Pg?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1

Or better yet, go to Amazon and buy her CD’s … all of ’em! Yes, I mean every last danged one of ’em!

(And please don’t call looking for JordanCornblog, as I hope to be mostly sleeping during that Maintenance timeframe.)

😉

Breakers Take It South Today

The Breakers travel to Connecticut to try to secure a play-off spot with Atlanta as their foil … and without the services of some key elements in their success.  Kelly Smith and Alex Scott are off with their fellow Brits, answering the call of national team duty.  Meanwhile, Leslie Osborne is lost to us for the rest of the season with a fractured collarbone.  Lil will be shining in her home state, I’m thinking … and I predict that Kacey Moore will get a header past Hope Solo today … helping the Breakers toward a decisive victory.  (Oh, and if anyone keeps tabs on my prognostications … they know how very accurate they can be … 20% of the time!)

If you have a chance to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World … believe Peter Travers … and me … and check it out!

A belated Happy Birthday to Boltgirl … blog on (and keep those frozen peas handy)!

And finally, for those who’d like the inside view of a nesting owl, there’s The Owl Box … thanks for the info, Jodi!  You can either click the link (or the large play button on the screen) and go to the site, or click the smaller play button below the screen to start the live feed in the screen right here (and avoid the ad).

The Parting Glass

I was introduced to a new song yesterday … first at the beautiful Funeral Mass for the husband of a co-worker … and then again, about 12 hours later, at the close of a Wailin’ Jennys concert.

Hearing it on Judy Popkin’s birthday was especially poignant … I share the lyric here … the part that I heard sung:

The Parting Glass

Of all the money e’er I had,
I spent it in good company.
And all the harm I’ve ever done,
Alas! it was to none but me.
And all I’ve done for want of wit
To mem’ry now I can’t recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, all the comrades e’er I had,
They’re sorry for my going away,
And all the sweethearts e’er I had,
They’d wish me one more day to stay,
But since it falls unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be with you all.

Here’s a video of the Jenny’s giving one performance of this beautiful song:
