Share a Moment with Meryl at Barnard

ChristopherCornblog steered me toward this …wonderful!

What an amazing woman … enjoy … and at least listen to the whole thing – well worth it!!!

I love the part about waking up in the middle of the night … “OMG, I have a paper due and I haven’t done ANY of the reading!”  (Yikes … as I mention it, I do believe one of those dreams visited my sleep just the other night.)

Relieving a not insignificant source of tension between Alice and myself, the Phlyers have bowed out of the Stanley Cup Phinals after six games … taking Chicago to OT before succumbing to the heavily favord Blackhawks.  Congrats, Chicago, on your first Cup in many, many years!

On the WPS front … the Breakers are well-represented amongst the All Stars (way to go Amy, Lauren, Kelly and Lil!)  Now, could you just start winning as Breakers?  Maybe start on Sunday against Sky Blue???

And while we’re in You Tube mode … here’s the detail on my Shaggy reference yesterday … an old fav from the days of driving RPE and friends to sporting events before they had licenses (the last time I was seriously and persistently exposed to popular music) …

Poetry

My good friend Alice, who is a Celtics fan (at least when they are in the play-offs) is also, I am learning, a John Wooden fan, and shared with me this wonderful article from The Poetry Foundation titled The Great Scorer … by John Wooden himself.

It brought back, for me, the poem we recited before every basketball game in high school …

If you think you’re beaten, you are.

If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you’d like to win but think you can’t

It is almost a cinch you won’t.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man;

But sooner or later the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.

Even at the time, I remember finding it weird (but of course our coaches were oblivious) to have young women chanting about the “stronger or faster man.”  Feminist consciousness was still a few years away from touching the mainstream … and likely didn’t ever much touch these very athletic, competitive, and homophobic women.

And truth be told, I didn’t find the poem inspiring … it just made me feel worse about not performing to capacity or promise.  What was wrong with me?  Well … there’s a story there … and in many ways, much as Shaggy sang, I’d like to say …”It wasn’t me.”  However, as I get older I also recognize that personal responsibility is an awfully potent antidote to the disempowerment and true victimization that many of us experienced as kids.  Soooo, while “It wasn’t me” probably applies to behaviors up to the age of 4 or so … falling back on it as an explanation for high school shortcomings may be a bit much.

** Sigh **

Anyway … poetry in the hands of John Wooden is very different from poetry in the hands of Miss (yes, Miss) Reynolds and Miss Walchak. (And CB, I’m wondering if teaching has changed/softened your perspective in any way …. on some of these folks who can still prompt anxiety dreams in me!?)

Funny to think back on it all.  Back in the day I found my own poems for inspiration … Whitman and Aiken and others.  Unfortunately, they contributed little to my performance on high school basketball courts … but they did keep me (relatively) sane!  So that’s something.

I leave you with one of Wooden’s maxims … something for Stephen Strasburg to keep in mind as he embarks on his highly-touted career!

Talent is God-given; be humble.

Fame is man-given; be thankful.

Conceit is self-given; be careful.

Oh, and GO FLYERS!  (With apologies to Alice …)

Ahhhhh …

Such weird weather ripped through our little world yesterday (but nothing compared to the devastation that hit Ohio and other parts of the Midwest).  We had a smorgasbord … from pelting rain to intense sun and back again …. with rainbows to boot.  I don’t know how Nourishing Words was able to dodge the drops and thunderbolts and create her wattle fence … but am certainly impressed and inspired!

In response to a request from a soccer buddy … I’ve created a World Cup Pool using Pool Tracker.  It’s open to the public … and I believe that if you click this link, you should be able to figure out how to join up … should you be so inclined.  The more the merrier (and there’s no $$ involved.)

As for the rest of it … between the oil spill, the MLB and NHL news, and this report from Mother Jones uncovering more about how the Bush Administration treated detainees … I am about to head back to bed.

But not without commeting on the oddness of Sir Elton John singing at Rush Limbaugh’s 4th wedding.

He paid 1 million dollars for Elton to sing, apparently … and Elton sang.

Does anyone else find this pretty much entirely gross?

I sure do … but then, I’m kinda cranky this morning.

WNBA?

I am so out of the loop when it comes to the WNBA, it’s unconscionable.  Brigitte, I apologize.

I see that Atlanta and Seattle are running away with things in their respective conferences at present.  And there’s a team in Tulsa?  Sorry … THAT’s how out of it I am!  I learned this morning that they are the old Shock … and they’re the team that’s got Marion Jones.  (She played nine minutes and netted 2 points against the Lynx on Friday.)

Keep meaning to get down to see the Sun one of these days!  (JBD … did you know they’ve got Tina Charles?)

Learned from the Beeg that Coach Pokey is alive and well and on Twitter … for those who’d like to keep up as she rehabs her image and gets back into the mix …

FC Gold Pride and the Freedom played to a 1-1 tie yesterday.  This evening it’s the Beat vs. the Red Stars.

The Phlyers are ready to hit the ice for game 5 … and I am still waiting to hear who Mo is rooting for!

😉

PS  At some point, I will begin to write about more weighty and relevant subjects here.  Perhaps after I retire from my day job.

Phillies …. Phlyers … Phantastic Phriday!

Whoo hoo! Philadelphia was a happy town last night.  Phirst, over at Citizen’s Bank Park, the Phillies pulled out a close one against San Diego (and, in perhaps the best news of the evening, Brad Lidge shut ’em down 1-2-3 in the 9th)!  Then, at the Wachovia Center, the Phlyers evened the series and will head to Chicago for game 5 of the Stanley Cup Phinals on Sunday.

I note that the Phlyers are undefeated after game 4 of every play-off series this year … so let’s continue that streak on Sunday!  (Oh, and I am curious, Mo … who are you rooting phor???) 😉

Before moving on to subjects other than hockey, I’ve been remiss in not featuring one particular PhlyerJames van Riemsdyk (JVR for short) … who’s had a phabulous rookie season and who was drafted out of UNH by the Phlyers.  He just turned 21 on May 4, for Pete’s sake!  Here’s a nice article about JVR and his phamily … Alice, you’ll phind it interesting, too!

Having James in a Flyers uniform has altered the hockey allegiances of his family and many friends. The New York Rangers and Broadway are in their rear-view mirrors. Now, it’s Broad Street all the way.

Here’s a sure sign that the van Riemsdyk’s are on board with the orange and black. As our telephone conversation concluded, Frans said, “I’ll leave you with these parting words: Let’s Go Flyers!”

I would be remiss if I did not mark the passing, yesterday, of John Wooden at age 99.  The Wizard of Westwood was so thoroughly embedded in the basketball landscape as I was growing up … he just seemed a “given.”  While I was more frustrated by than admiring of his amazing win record back in the day (being a reflexive phan of the underdog and all) … his values and character were inspiring … as in this video where he discusses pursuing victory with honor …

And while we’re in a You Tube vein, check out the Lilith Fair channel … hope the tour does well this summer!  Here’s a sample – one of the videos on the channel – for Brandi Carlisle phans …

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSBl8zD9J_M

On the WPS front, the Red Stars face the Beat on Sunday in the televised game … a match-up that will feature LOTS of changes for both teams (the Red Stars having a new coach … and the Beat with a bunch of new players … including goalkeeper Hope Solo, defender Tina Ellertson, forward Eniola Aluko, plus midfielders Lori Chalupny and Carolyn Blank.

Here’s Kate the Great on the changes and the coming match!

Friday Fulmonations

After reading (and while still listening to) a beautiful piece by Boltgirl on the conflict-inducing hold of religion for some (many) of us … I am looking out the window at a sunny spring morning (yup, still spring – tho’ it feels like it’s been summer for @ 3 months now).  And I’m thinking about baseball … not the Phillies … but bad calls and good sportsmanship … and tradition.  I’m talking Tigers baseball … and the blown call … Jim Joyce and Armando Galarraga … and the puzzling (to my mind) inaction of MLB and Bud Selig.

What do you think?  Terry Francona thinks the call should stand … and Governor Granholm has issued a proclamation giving Galarraga the perfect game.  If Selig were going to overturn the call, I’m thinking he’d have done it by now … and I wish he had … out of kindness to the Umpire as much as anything else.

Listen to this interview with Joyce … very forthright … very sad.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EmEiFgDf5I&feature=popt00us04

It’s not like he’d be changing a call in the 5th inning that might have affected subsequent events in the game.  And it’s not like the next guy up got a hit.  It is a unique situation.  I’d be hard pressed to believe that Selig is creating a precedent for anything that’s likely to recur.

The cynic in me thinks that prolonging this creates more press for baseball … and therefore more viewers … and maybe more ticket buyers … and possibly more revenue.  Controversy, after all, heightens interest.  So maybe he is just holding off and will eventually overturn the thing.  Or maybe he is seeking more counsel.  I hope so … because Joyce and Galarraga and the Tigers have all comported themselves with such dignity and grace and sportsmanship … a part of me hopes they will all be rewarded for it.

Then again, I guess there are always the intrinsic rewards of dignity and grace and sportsmanship … enough in themselves … and maybe the most important lesson to come from all of this … for players, umpires, politicians … and fans of the game like yours truly.

On the WPS front, the Breakers have waived Maggie Tomecka and have signed Lindsay Tarpley … while the Freedom and FC Gold Pride will play on Saturday for first place in the league (and Gold Pride have added Shannon Boxx to their already-strong collection of soccer players)!

And … a reminder to all Breakers fans … tomorrow’s scheduled game with the Athletica is OFF!  (No more Athletica … no more game.)

The Flyers and Blackhawks face off at 8PM ET tonight in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals … and yes, the Phillies are probably playing somewhere, too.

I'm So Far Behind I'll Be Ahead Soon!

That’s my hopeful prognosis … as I quickly scan the news for tidbits, such as:

  • The Flyers’ OT win!  Alright, AMR, we’re on a roll now!!!
  • That horrible call up in Detroit.  (I’m thinking Obama needs to step in and overturn that one, if MLB doesn’t take care of business.)
  • Sarah Silverman’s flap with Fox News … which has led me to purchase her book The Bedwetter … as part of the effort to move it up on Amazon’s best-sellers list (and as a satisfying little f**k you to Fox).

I’m sure there’s more … but, as usual … out of time here!

So, What to Write About Today?

I don’t want to be abusing your kind attention by posting drivel … but by the same token, it’s probably a drag to visit here day after day and see nothing new.  (Or even worse, depressing posts about Phillies’ and Flyers’ scores …)  So, what to do?

I am getting closer and closer to the day that a phone upgrade is possible … so being a gadget geek with a Droid on the horizon, it’s not so difficult to look at some cool things one can do with an iPad and remain pretty much dispassionate about the whole thing …

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATpSPNIuj3M

There’s some soccer about to be played in South Africa, from what I hear … so here is the link to the official site … for those in need.

The Breakers were going to be playing the Athletica this coming Saturday … and sadly, that game has been cancelled … although I hear that the players will be there and available for any ticket-holders wo don’t get the message …

I can’t bring myself to write about the oil spill … just can’t.

And here’s a link to some Commencement photos taken by the father of a friend of RPE’s (with RPE and us in the mix … ) but you have to search (and know what you’re looking for) …

😉

Rabbit, Rabbit

As June begins, I am still looking back and savoring this past weekend’s Commencement.  Looking forward to the slideshow that I am guessing they will post shortly.  Meanwhile, it’s a new month … and time to get back to work.  How relentlessly time moves, eh?

And I see that my habit of saying “Rabbit, rabbit” at the start of a new month is apparently not sufficient … which actually explains an awful lot (and comes as something of a relief)!

Phlyers?  Phillies?  This is not phun!
